If you're looking to buy a new TV, there are now more types and sizes than ever before. This is great for choice but can make choosing the right one a little complicated. Here we look at what many consider to be the finest - the flat Plasma Screen.

At the risk of getting all technical, here's how they work. Plasma Televisions use thousands of sealed, low pressure glass chambers filled with a mixture of neon and xenon. Behind these chambers are coloured phosphors, one red, one blue, and one green for each chamber. When energized, these chambers of plasma emit invisible UV light. The UV light strikes the red, green and blue phosphors on the back glass of the display making them produce the visible light that we see as a television display.

The advantage of the Plasma TV system is that displays are flat, thin, light enough to hang on the wall and can be much larger than conventional television screens.

THE MYTHS SURROUNDING PLASMA TV TECHNOLOGY

·                One of the most common misconceptions is that Plasma Screens only last about 5 years. Perhaps this was true of some of the very first models, but nowadays you should expect them to last at least as long as conventional TVs.

·                Another worry is that the gas in a Plasma TV display needs replacing every 2 years. Fortunately this is not true. Plasma screens should not need any additional service to extend the screen's lifetime.

·                Our third myth at least has some truth to it. This is that Plasma Screens are particularly susceptible to screen burn - this happens when a image is left in the same place on the screen for too long, like those pesky channel logos, and you're left with a permanent residue of the offending image - It is true that Plasma screens are more susceptible than conventional televisions (mainly in their first 50-100 hours of use) however, at the time of writing, many models come fitted with a variety of features designed to eradicate screen burn. That said, it is probably a good idea not to leave it on all night and to ensure that the screensaver on your DVD player is switched on.

WHAT IS PLASMA TV UP AGAINST?

·                CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) - This is television as we used to know it, but these bulky boxes have a physical size limitation and are difficult to make much larger than 36 inches. (However, the world's largest has recently come out at 40 inches). Plasma TVs begin at 32 inches, with the most popular sizes being 42 inches and 50 inches.

·                Rear Projection - Essentially a self-contained projector and screen. They commonly range between 40 - 60 inches but if you thought normal CRTs were big and bulky...

·                Front Projection - Video projectors work much like a real cinema. You'll need either a white wall or a screen on which to project the picture and you'll need to black out the room if you want to see what's going on. They aren't great if you just wanna catch the headlines, but they do offer a discrete, compact option for watching movies or big sporting events.

·                LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - The main rival for Plasma TV, these displays have been developed from the screens of the pocket calculator. Like Plasma they are flat, and wall mountable, but larger sizes tend to more expensive than plasma equivalents. Surveys have also shown that most still prefer the picture quality of plasma screens.
