For an AV receiver that sounds like a Hi-Fi amp, the Cambridge Audio 551R is in a different league.

TRUE HI-FI SOUND QUALITY

Whereas so many of the 551R's competitors are packed with features but fall down badly on sound quality, this Cambridge Audio is different. Unlike others, Cambridge Audio put sound quality at the very top of their priorities. Using fully discrete amplifiers which are kept separate from the processing and input stages, the 551R sounds more precise and detailed than rivals. Then there's a substantial power supply and an oversize low flux toroidal transformer - an expensive component that's critical to a real piece of audio equipment. This helps provide a deep, sustained bass response as well as punchy dynamics. Something else key to the 551R's audiophile pedigree is Cambridge Audio's proprietary Forced / Convection Heat Tunnel - X-Tract. This custom design enables the 551R to operate extremely quietly and at a low temperature. A perfectly balanced combination of forced cooling and natural convection effectively draws heat away from the 551R's substantial transformer and output stages. Thanks to X-Tract you'll never again be plagued by irritating and unnecessary cooling fan noise, letting you get the most from your music or movie soundtracks.

POWERFUL PROCESSING

Using Cirrus Logic dual 32-bit DSPs, Cambridge Audio has enabled full support for Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution and Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. DTS speaker re-mapping allows the playback of DTS-HD High Resolution or Master Audio formats with encoded height information on standard 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 speaker setups. Meanwhile, a Faroudja 1080p video scaler vastly improves performance from lower resolution TV broadcasts and DVDs as well as transcoding analogue video inputs to the digital domain for simpler and neater connection to the TV using just one HDMI cable.

EASY TO SET-UP AND USE

Despite the high-tech spec, the 551R is easy to set-up and a joy to use. The Cambridge 551R features Cambridge Audios Mic Controlled Auto Set-up (CAMCAS) with a supplied microphone for extremely quick and easy installation. And completing the perfect picture, Lip-sync audio delay means the user can simply adjust for processing delays in the source or TV.

EFFORTLESS STYLE

To ensure that the 551R looks every bit as good as it sounds, it uses the company's impressive wrap-around casework and thick, aluminium front panel. This doesn't just look good, it helps the sound quality, too. With class-leading rigidity and low resonance as part of the design, the 551R resists both mechanical and electrical interference. A highly ergonomic navigator remote handset also offers full control of the 651BD and 751BD Blu-ray players and vice versa.

For the finest cinema and music sound quality, without the frills, the Cambridge Audio 551R is a class above.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Great sound and easy connections This was the only amp at the price that had pre / in out's for ease of connections. HDMI was good, remote worked well A very happy customer 07 May 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by A very disappointing experience Having been delighted with my old Cambridge Audio amp, I decided I'd pay the premium and go with their new model for HDMI audio, so that I could enjoy blu-ray and games from my PC in full uncompressed HD audio. Let's start with what the unit does right. There's plenty of connectivity, here's a 7.1 direct input which is useful for some PC sound cards. All the HDMI inputs can be reassigned to use analogue or optical audio if needed. The display is super clear and easy to read. Speaking of analogue, the sound quality is excellent. However, the units handling of optical and HDMI is, at this price, unacceptable. Optical audio streams suffer from the old "silent streaming" bug, where a period of silence in the audio causes the amp to lose the connection with the optical stream and then lose the next bit of audio when the sound-track starts up again. Worse still, Linear PCM via HDMI randomly cuts out, completely spoiling the experience of playing PC games or Wii-U for instance. 21 December 2013
