At the heart of this impressive amplifier is a hugely impressive 980 watt power amplifier - that's 980 watts RMS into an 8 ohm load, making for 140 watts per channel! Even by the standards of other flagship AV receivers, that's an impressive figure. What such effortless power does is allow for the use of just about any speaker - no matter how hard they are to drive. It also gives the big Yamaha immense reserves of bass and serious dynamic clout that easily competes with more expensive AV equipment. With Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART high current circuitry, discrete amp configuration and Pure Direct control, the RXV3900 offers serious hi-fi sound quality, in addition to clout.

When it comes to processing power, the top-of-the-range Yamaha AV receiver is right there, too. Anchor Bay VRS video processing technologies are amongst the best in the business whilst all analogue and HDMI sources can be upscaled to full 1080p resolution for the very best video performance. Doing their bit to aid sound quality are Digital System Clock Isolators and Low Jitter Phase Locked Loop circuitry for HDMI and other digital inputs. By reducing jitter, the sound quality is smoother and more natural: usually this kind of technology is only found in more expensive digital technology.

When it comes to connecting the RXV-3900, there's pretty much everything you could hope for. Four HDMI inputs are matched to twin HDMI outputs which allow you to connect both a projector and flat screen TV without the need for switching cables. The Yamaha RXV3900 is also equipped with a special socket that allows for the connection of optional YDS-11 iPod dock. Once connected, you can control and display your iPod information via the Yamaha's remote control. Speaking of control, the RXV-3900 has a superb new GUI (Graphical User Interface) that even displays album art. Along with other, more expensive, range-topping AV receivers, the RXV3900 comes with the hugely desirable fitment of a LAN socket. Once connected to your home network, this connection allows you access to Internet radio and streaming from your PC via Yamaha's MusicCAST. You can even control the RXV3900 via a web browser using a PC or PDA meaning that it can be placed completely out of sight. As an optional extra, you can also connect Bluetooth devices via the YBA-10 receiver.

The Yamaha RX-V3900 also makes the ideal centre for a multi-room system. Two additional zones can be run with a second remote control ideal for use in another room. Real attention to detail is shown by the sleep timer that works in all zones and the zone 2 output with Onscreen display capability for a second TV.

As this is a Yamaha you'd expect plenty of DSP (Digital Signal Processor) modes, and the RXV3900 doesn't disappoint; a choice of 22 DSP 3D settings provide a wide choice of audio effects. Furthermore, Silent Cinema provides enhanced headphone listening whilst night time listening can also be enhanced without disturbing the neighbours.

When setting up the RX-V3900 an advanced version of their well-liked YPAO system uses multiple point measuring for automatic speaker setup.
