If you're looking for a floorstanding speaker that refuses to make compromises, then you owe it to yourself to take a listen to the Mordaunt Short Mezzo 6.
Key to the Mezzo 6's outstanding performance is the technology that MS have packed into the design. Taking the highly reviewed Performance range as inspiration, Mordaunt Short developed an all new Aspirated Tweeter Technology. This tweeter venting system, allows the tweeter to "breathe" better, thereby creating a more open and less "forced" sound quality. The aluminium dome tweeter itself is a development of a design that MS have perfected over the past 20 years.
Yet it's not just the tweeter that has received Mordaunt Short's expert attention. Mordaunt Short have been making their famous Continuous Profile Cones (CPC) for over 10 years now, and the bass units used in the Mezzo 6 take this technology to new heights. With the sound deadened woofer chassis, each bass unit delivers a sound every bit as pure and untainted as the treble. With twin woofers per cabinet - one of which is fully isolated and deals solely with low frequencies - the Mezzo 6 certainly isn't shy when it comes to creating a dramatic and dynamic sound stage.
Of course, it matters little how good the woofer and treble are if the cabinet can't live up to their quality. Fortunately the Mezzo 6's cabinet is more than a match. From its curved design that reduces standing waves to the substantial cabinet bracing used, the Mezzo 6's cabinet is as rock solid and substantial as its sound quality.
Finished to Mordaunt Short's usual high standards and packed full of audiophile components, the Mezzo 6 makes for a compelling listen.

"These talented speakers boast attractive looks and dynamic all-round ability. A must-hear. It's difficult to resist the stare of the Mezzo 6s. The traditional wood finish (it's actually a very convincing wood composite), the graphite-grey baffle and aluminium drivers are a potent union of sophistication and modernity. But, one of the most striking features of this speaker is the 2.5cm aluminium tweeter. It's not much to look at from the front, but it actually uses M-S's Aspirated Tweeter Technology, taken from its high-end Performance Series. As you'd expect with a five-star speaker, it's extremely difficult placing any criticism at the feet of the Mordaunt-Shorts." - What Hi-Fi? Sound & Vision magazine |
