Packing in a Full HD screen with Freeview HD, three HDMIs and twin USB sockets, the Toshiba 40L1353DB is a generously equipped budget TV.

At the heart of this impressive Toshiba TV is a Full HD 1080p, LED backlit screen. Full HD 1080p resolution gets the very best from Blu-ray and other sources and gives lifelike detail and stunning realism. Yet this Toshiba isn't just about high resolution, it's about smooth motion, too. With AMR100 processing on board, this TV is perfect for both fast moving sport and action movies. With an LED backlit panel, the Toshiba also gives an impressive contrast ratio. With a Brightness figure of 300cd/m, this gives the Toshiba 40L1353 TV a crisp and bright picture with deep blacks and excellent grey scale. Typical of good quality LED sets, there's also truer realism and a greater sense of depth. Thanks to a suite of noise reduction processors the picture is also clean and free from distracting digital distortion.

To get a sound quality to match the picture we'd recommend using the Toshiba's digital or analogue (headphone) outputs through your home cinema system or soundbar. That way you'll get an expansive sound quality to match the picture. As standard, though, it comes with a 8w + 8w amplifier built-in and stereo speakers that do a fair job of filling larger rooms with sound.

With Freeview HD built-in, there's no need for an HD set-top box. Freeview HD also ensures you get the best from the HD screen, giving more depth and detail to TV programmes. With BBC One, Two, ITV and Channel 4 now all available in HD, you'll be able to enjoy a wide range of programmes in the high resolution format.

In terms of connections, the Toshiba 40" has all the flexibility of more expensive models. Three HDMI sockets are on hand for a wide range of digital devices. In addition to this, it boasts SCART, component and VGA PC connections for your other sources. The twin USB sockets are extremely useful for plugging in digital media devices and playing back video, music and pictures on your TV.

For a big screen bargain with the extra resolution of Freeview HD, the Toshiba 40L1353DB is free from compromise.

Rated 1 out of 5áby Vibrating sound and picture quality terrible Bought this TV from Liverpool branch on 150314. The sound constantly vibrates against the television regardless of settings e.g. bass on/off or speech/film etc. I know it is a budget TV but even the picture is grainy to the point of me checking my own sight! I am using Virgin cable and have checked all the connections and tried all three HDMI ports. If I can't cure the problem the television will be going back as not fit for purpose. I have two very cheap ú100 televisions in my childrens rooms and both of these produce better picture and sound then this TV. Do not buy! 20 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5áby Excellent value for money Purchased to replace a bedroom CRT tv so extensive features were not required. The Toshiba tv is very light which makes for easy wall fitting, overall tv dimensions are very little more than the screen size so wall space required is minimal. Set up is very straight forward, all the stations I normally receive were picked up and displayed well, HD picture quality is excellent but SD could be better though perfectly adequate, particularly considering the low price of the set. Sound quality is probably the weakest link but again adequate. The memory stick slot is handy for films, photos etc. Overall this set performs very well for the money and won't disappoint. 18 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5áby Good basic TV Picture is good. I don't have an aerial available to it is simply plugged into my cable box so I have only seen 720i input. The sound was acceptable for a unit of this price but I bought a Yamaha YAS101 which I connected to the TV via the digital co-ax connector and all worked fine. Much better for the 3.5x3.5m room I have it in. 14 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5áby Great picture but terrible sound. The standard speakers are simply not fit for purpose. At medium level it distorts. Sound bars seem to be an expensive gimmick, will hook up a decent set of pc satellite speakers for ú50. 26 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5áby Good tv and very good service Tv has everything you need although an optical out as well as a coax out would have been advantageous 23 February 2014
Rated 4 out of 5áby Good tv for the price Found the tv despite its 40" size to not feel overly large in my sitting room. Picture was very good on the sky HD channels and okay on normal digital. Sound as previously mentioned by other people isn't the best but adequate for normal use. Extremely good value at ú320 16 February 2014
Rated 4 out of 5áby Not disappointed It sets itself up with minimum of input from customer- no tuning through "snow" and noise like the days gone by. It''s lovely and skinny and light- the base is heavier than the TV! And the Instruction book is not a Degree couse. All good. 12 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5áby Super Set We bought this TV to fix to a bedroom wall & it looks fantastic. We have had Toshiba TV's before and they have been good. However, when this TV arrived we placed it on the floor, using the stand. It was put in front of our existing Toshiba which is on a cabinet with glass doors. We tuned it in OK, but the sound was not good. There was a "tinny" echo. After moving the TV, the sound was perfect, I think the "echo" was a reflection from the cabinet glass doors. I think this is an excellent TV for the cost, especially with the 5 yr warranty included. The unit was deliverd exactly at the time stated and I could track its progress. Brilliant service from Richer Sounds. 10 February 2014
