High Resolution sound - the highest ever for music on the go

High Resolution Audio files take music to the next level. High Resolution Audio provides music files in 24 bit/96kHz or 24 bit/192kHz formats. Digital music files at this level provide a much more detailed and smoother sound than typical CD (16 bit/44.1kHz) files. The difference between HD (High Definition) music and typical MP3/AAC compressed music files is even greater. HD music offers a deeper and wider sound stage, more precise imaging and, above all, a far greater sense of realism.

A wide choice of music already available
There are many HD Audio recordings already available to download online and you may already have started a collection on your computer or NAS drive. Where the AK70 really scores is being able to take those recordings with you - in the highest quality possible. The AK70 supports a wide range of file formats, including WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3, OGG, APE(Normal, High, Fast), AAC, ALAC, AIFF, DFF and DSF.

DSD support by conversion
As well as the above formats, the AK70 also supports DSD 64 and 128 formats via conversion. Originally designed for SACD players, DSD (Direct Stream Digital) encoded music files offer the same detailed, transparent sound as other HD file formats. The AK70 uses a powerful processor to convert DSD signals to PCM for superb resolution.

Support for balanced headphones
With its 4-pole headphone socket, the AK70 is ideal for use with balanced headphones. Using a balanced signal between the source and headphones reduces noise and interference and is especially handy on the move.

USB Audio
The AK70 is the first A&K model to support USB audio digital out. You can connect up digital-input portable amps through USB to the AK70, for the purest sound quality. The AK70 can transfer DSD in native through DoP (DSD over PCM). It can also convert DSD into PCM for output for portable amps that do not support DoP.

Astell & Kern CD ripper
Uploading your CDs is easier than ever with the AK70. The AK70 lets you rip CDs with ease by linking with the AK CD-RIPPER. It supports the CD track error correction feature and the meta data (ID3TAG) auto input feature using Gracenote's database.

Wi-Fi enabled for streaming and updates
A further upgrade over the Jr model is built-in Wi-Fi. This lets you choose the connection that's best for you. For the fastest and most stable connection to your PC or Mac we'd recommend USB. As a cable-free alternative, choose Wi-Fi for streaming from NAS drives or other DLNA enabled devices such as your laptop.

Pocket a Hi-Res audio bargain, with the Astell & Kern AK70.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little fiddly but sounds wonderful Waited till I'd owned this a few months before reviewing, because if I'd posted an immediate review I might have been less positive. I bought this to replace a bust iPod Classic which Apple refused to replace despite it being relatively new. Unsurprisingly the AK70 isn't as immediately user-friendly as the iPod, but once you get used to its foibles it's a great little player. I still put all my music in iTunes then copy the files over to the AK70 in Windows, which is a little time consuming but no big deal really. The touch screen on the AK70 is great and the bluetooth function works perfectly in my car. The much-trumpeted Hi-Res audio doesn't sound much different to me (.aiff files sound much the same as .mp3s) so any concerns over memory space can be overcome by keeping everything at a decent mp3 bitrate (I tend to rip at 160kbps). Charging is a bit faffy - you can connect the lead to a standard wall charger but it won't work; instead you need to charge the AK70 from a laptop, which means leaving your laptop on for hours while it charges. I think you can get dedicated A&K wall chargers but I haven't needed one yet. The charge doesn't last nearly as long as teh iPod but again, it's never been a problem for me as I just keep on top of it. All in all, the AK70 might be too fiddly to manage if you're all about the ease of the iPod, but if - like me - you've had it up to here with Apple, this is a great substitute. And it hasn't crashed once yet, which is a refreshing change ;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic portable music player I bought this when my previous player (not this make) packed up. I though the sound from that was good but this is another step-up. The quality of the player is great all round. Whilst it might seem expensive I think it's worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound - And Plays DSD Files Gaplessly This is my second hi-def music player and is an upgrade to my first player. The sound on all file types is excellent: it plays the music without colouring it (although there is a built in graphic equaliser if you prefer to fiddle with the sound) and it has effortlessly driven all of the headphones I've used, both on ear and in ear monitors. So far, I've played ALAC, FLAC, DSF and even mp3 music files without any trouble at all. I've also played a mixture of music - including classical, jazz and rock - and some audioplays and all of them sound really good. The AK70 will connect to the internet using wi-fi for any firmware upgrades and has the latest bluetooth format to connect to external speakers and it will play hi-def file formats via bluetooth. I've not tried it in the car but the manual says that it isn't designed for that. It might be better to use the line out setting (you can change the headphone socket to a lineout output in the menu settings) if you want to play your music in the car. You can also use the lineout to play your music through a hi-fi system. The screen is touch sensitive and works well to access various menu settings. The screen is also very clear and shows album artwork very nicely. To save power, you can set the screen to turn off after a few seconds. The AK70 is only a music player so if you want a media player for video and games then you'll need something else. This is designed for music playback and it does that exceptionally well. The player has a decent amount of internal storage with 64GB available. To add more storage, the device has a microSD card slot and the player will accept 128GB microSD cards (I read on a forum that it should accept a 200GB card) without trouble. It scans the files on the card very quickly - much quicker than my other player - and overall it is a fantastic music player. It is a little expensive but, as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for and you are paying for a quality piece of kit. (I did find it cheaper elsewhere and Richer Sounds happily price beat their competitors.)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sounds good Had problems setting it up but Richer Sounds helped. Initial reaction is that it sounds good but not compatible with hi fi and car although it loads and plays in the car. Also did not work with Cambridge. I hate to say this but Apple is easier to use although the sound is not as good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stops you in your track(s) Like everyone at Richer Sounds I like my music. I play music in the car, in the office, on the train, plane and walking down the street. I bought the Astell & Kern AK70 because I wanted to be able to get the absolute most out of my music and it really didn't disappoint. The range of detail from a satisfying solid bass to the sharp accurate high note means you genuinely hear aspects of music you know well in a whole new way. It's a joy to listen to and it feels great in your hand. Some reviews complain about the sharp edges - I love them. It's not pretending to be an iPod. It's not cheap but then nothing about this product is cheap so you expect to pay a little more for the pleasure. This is one of those rare occasions where the product really does live up to hype.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely worth every penny! Not much to say other than this is a fantastic little player. A huge huge step up from my old ipod. The power available to drive my Audeze SINEs is phenomenal most other devices like my phone fall flat on their faces when trying to power them. Having the tidal streaming is god send, I can use my existing account and stream when at home or in the office.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fairly expensive but like they say you get waht you pay for This is my second AK product the first being an AK Jr which is a great sounding device but lacked a bit in the features and usability department. This is where the AK70 is a massive improvement. The AK70 is a superb sounding device even better than the AK Jr (which is still a very impressive sound) I listen to the AK70 through a pair of Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones and the sound is stunning. The AK70 interface is really easy to use and pairing with other devices is a breeze. I also use it with my Naim Mu So and again very easy to use. If you are looking for a reasonably priced Hi Res device that sounds fantastic and is also a handy size for carrying this is the way to go. I am very pleased with mine and would highly recommend it. Also thanks to the friendly and helpful staff at Richer Sounds Solihull for the demo and coffee
