"The precise, dynamic and open character are very much the core of the AK70 MKII's sonic signature.” What Hi-Fi? award winner 2017. Product of the Year.

Now with Dual DACS

By using twin DACs (Digital to Analogue Convertors) the AK79 Mk2 further improves upon the technical prowess of the original model. Usually only found in high-end CD players, DACs and streamers, using dual DACs is a sign of true audiophile quality. By using one DAC for the left channel and another for the right, the AK70 Mk2 offers channel precision and stereo imaging that's well beyond most rivals.

Superior sound quality
With an improved spec come better figures and better figures mean improved sound. Signal to Noise Ratio, Crosstalk and Total Harmonic Distortion figures have all improved over the first AK70. This means get more detail, greater realism and a punchier, more dynamic sound.

A wide choice of music available
There are many HD Audio recordings already available to download online and you may already have started a collection on your computer or NAS drive. Where the AK70 Mk2 really scores is being able to take those recordings with you - in the highest quality possible. The AK70 Mk2 supports a wide range of file formats, including WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3, OGG, APE(Normal, High, Fast), AAC, ALAC, AIFF, DFF and DSF.

DSD support by conversion
As well as the above formats, the AK70 Mk2 also supports DSD 64 and 128 formats via conversion. Originally designed for SACD players, DSD (Direct Stream Digital) encoded music files offer the same detailed, transparent sound as other HD file formats. The AK70 uses a powerful processor to convert DSD signals to PCM for superb resolution.

Support for balanced headphones
With its 4-pole headphone socket, the AK70 Mk2 is ideal for use with balanced headphones. Using a balanced signal between the source and headphones reduces noise and interference and is especially handy on the move.

USB Audio
The AK70 Mk2 also supports USB audio digital out. You can connect up digital-input portable amps through USB to the AK70 Mk2, for the purest sound quality. The player can transfer DSD in native through DoP (DSD over PCM). It can also convert DSD into PCM for output for portable amps that do not support DoP.

Astell & Kern CD ripper
Uploading your CDs is easier than ever with the AK70 Mk2. The player lets you rip CDs with ease by linking with the AK CD-RIPPER. It supports the CD track error correction feature and the meta data (ID3TAG) auto input feature using Gracenote's database.

Wi-Fi enabled for streaming and updates
Finally, the AK70 Mk2 has built-in Wi-Fi. This lets you choose the connection that's best for you. For the fastest and most stable connection to your PC or Mac we'd recommend USB. As a cable-free alternative, choose Wi-Fi for streaming from NAS drives or other DLNA enabled devices such as your laptop.

Sounding better than ever, the Astell & Kern AK70 Mk2 packs a powerful punch from your pocket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good indeed! Leicester Richer Sounds kindly demoed this, before I decided to buy it and I'm so glad I did. I previously listened to mobile music via my phone and to be fair probably still will for the gym as it is decent enough when it is just background, but when you sit and actually listen this thing has so much more depth. Now wondering if my Sony XBA-4's are due for an upgrade to get the best out of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Player I've been considering a DAP for some time and am very happy with this unit. Wonderful sound quality backed up by a very user-friendly interface. The unit works well with my Linux laptop when transferring my FLAC files (no additional software required). Battery life is a little on the short side but hasn't been a problem yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cracking player...music collection revitalised... I first went into the City branch to demo an Onkyo player mid-year 2017, taking my Sennheiser Momentum M2 AEBT headphones with me; Bluntly, I was completely underwhelmed, just not to my taste at all and sounding very thin...almost anaemic. (fairly broad spectrum of music, most rock/metal but also electronic and dance, with some alternative in there as well). I'd seen the AK70 Mk1 in the display, hated the colour (!) but with nothing to lose I asked to demo that as well. I was blown away; it was as enlightening as the Onkyo was disappointing. Music sounding far fuller bodied, warm, great stereo separation and placement. I was involuntarily getting very into the music (embarrassingly), perhaps for almost an hour, flicking between tracks, playing with settings. I was very impressed indeed, and I honestly can't remember why I didn't buy it there and then. In the meantime, the Mk2 has come out with a better spec, and in black. Thank the Lord....mint green, whatever next...I wasn't planning on dropping into the City store on the way to a meeting, but with ample time, I did. Ali was once again in there to help me out, absolute star, he's been extremely helpful and knowledgeable for the last 3 or 4 purchases. I didn't give it a demo this time (not *that* much time to spare), and am now busily re-ripping my whole CD collection into FLAC format using Max. Slow job but worth it to create a master set of files. I've loaded a few favourite albums onto the AK70, and yes, it's every bit as good as I remember the Mk1 being (same headphones). Player is really simple to navigate, the unit is very small, easily pocketable, quite weighty but nicely built. The Android OS is snappy enough but haven't yet tested battery life or online streaming over WiFi from Tidal (I don't subscribe to Tidal...yet). I have tried BT pairing the Sennheisers, which does use AptX and works well. Sound isn't *quite* as warm as when using the cable, but it may well come into it's own for the convenience when commuting, and the noise cancelling on the train. For any serious listening though, it is better with the cable. I'll probably invest in another pair of headphones with balanced cables to maximise the Mk2-ness of the AK70. Overall, very impressed so far. Looking forward to getting a 256GB MicroSD card and filling it up with my (fairly static) music collection. It's been a long time since I've indulged in just listening to music, and frankly I can't wait to see what the AK70 can reveal. Once again, go and see Ali in the London City branch, top bloke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb-Sounding Music Player I went into RS expecting to buy the Pioneer XDP-300R-B - the better battery life over the AK MKII was the draw for me. But I let myself be persuaded to the staff to give the AK70 a go. I'm so glad I did. My first experience - listening to a remastered Led Zep album - was ok; I didn't have the volume up high, and whilst the sound quality was subtly improved over my FiiO X3 it didn't 'wow' me. Next album up was the best of Art of Noise, which had been recorded at a higher volume. Listening on a train with my B&W C5s, this blew my mind - I have never heard sound like this. I've continued to explore various music genres - prog rock, jazz, classical - with a variety of headphones (B&W P5, Sennheiser Momentum and IE80s) and , providing the volume is sufficient to drive the headphones and bring them to life, the clarity and quality of the sound is never less than astounding. User interface is functional - it's perfectly ok - and battery life is alright - I've had about 8 hours from a full charge, but have taken advice from the staff and carry a battery pack with me for emergency recharging. I bought this on the basis I could take it back after 2 weeks if I didn't get on with it, but there's no chance of that happening. Thanks to the guys at London Bridge for getting me to change my mind - I was so close to missing out on sonic perfection, and am so glad that I didn't make that mistake.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Flawed diamond Savagely expensive. Inadequate on-board storage. Agricultural music transfer. Mediocre battery life, possibly related to the fact that from time-to-time it runs as hot as the interior of a newly-formed neutron star. And then you plug in a decent pair of headphones and listen to a CD quality or better recording - and all of the above is forgotten.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sound great but dissapointing useability Whilst the sound is very good, in every day use I am very disappointed with this product and have found myself going back to my iPhone as the music player on most occassions. The AK will not connect to all wifi networks and you cannot save music from Tidal..... I spent a lot of time considering my options before I bought this because I was aware that you cannot connect to Spotify or Deezer and so I would have to rely on Tidal. In the end decided to buy the AK. However, I quickly learnt that there is no way to download music onto the device from Tidal, even though I can do this with my Tidal account on my iPhone, iPad, Mac and Laptop. WHY would this be the case? So my only option is to stream from Tidal, BUT if I am in a public place where the wifi connection needs any sort of two step verification, you cannot do this on the AK70 mkII...... for example you enter the password for the network and then it opens a browser to accept terms and conditions - NOT POSSIBLE. So my only option is to download cd's onto the player, but I moved on from that limitation many years ago when I started enjoying the freedom of exploring new music through services like Spotify and Deezer. So overall very disappointing. I spent 600GBP around 1 month ago and I am already back to using my iPhone most of the time. Not happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Astell & Kern AK70 MK11 After buying the Astell & Kern AK70 MK11, I have enjoyed the quality of the music, and the ability to store so much more than when I used an ipod. It links up perfectly with wireless headphone, and speakers. Easy to import music, as it is just drag and drop, and works well with a Mac. Now looking at different formats for the music, as that will enhance the quality even more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding HI RES player I bought this player from the Newcastle store, after the guys let me demo the display model I was totally convinced with the new Mk 2 AK70. I already had the MK1 AK 70 and was wondering if the MK 2 was an improvement after spending 15 minutes with the demo model it was clear that there is a significant improvement over the MK 1. The AK70 MK2 uses dual dacs one per channel giving a much better stereo seperation and the overall sound is better, the bass response is better as are the mids and treble. Overall a brilliant hi-res music player. Thanks to the very helpful staff at RS Newcastle I'm very happy with my new AK70 MK2
