“All a pair of headphones can do is sound, look and feel great – and the B&W PX7s tick all three boxes.” ‘What Hi-Fi’ – 5 Star review. Tested at £350.

Flagship sound

As the flagship headphones from the company that’s world-famous for its audio products, the PX7s sound something special. Custom-designed, 43.6mm drive units are developed and tuned by the same team behind the £22,500 Diamond 800 speakers used as reference speakers the world over. This means you get sensational levels of detail and realism that others simply gloss over. The larger, over ear size also gives them the power to impress.

Keep the outside world out, with adaptive noise cancellation
Making sure you hear every drop of detail from the high resolution drivers, ANC (Adaptive Noise Cancelling) ensures an inky dark background. Whether you’re at a busy station or terminal or travelling by train, plane or coach, adaptive noise cancelation measures the background and cancels it out – letting you concentrate on the music.

Sleek style – race-car inspired
Just like high performance motorsport cars and bikes, the PX7 uses woven carbon fibre composite components. These ultra-strong arms give the PX7 headphones the perfect combination of light weight and strength. They also come with a storage case for protection when not in use.

Extra-long battery life
With up to 30 hours battery life, the PX7s have enough juice for a flight from London to San Francisco and back, with time to spare. What’s more, this is with Bluetooth and ANC activated, so you don’t have to go wired and passive to get this battery life. If you’re in a hurry, just 15 minutes of charge is enough for five hours playback.

Intelligent functions
They might be packed with technology, but that doesn’t make the PX7s difficult to use. In fact, they’re amongst the most user-friendly headphones in their class. Rather than using an array of fiddly buttons, the PX7 uses intuition. Lift an ear pad to hear what’s around, for example, and the music automatically stops. Put it back and music plays on.

Hear just what you’ve been missing out on, with the Bowers & Wilkins PX7.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost brilliant The main reason for purchasing the headphones was to help me retain my sanity and reduce grumpiness when returning to a noisy office after a year and a half working at home, where the loudest sound was a bullfinch munching sunflower seeds at window mounted bird feeder. The noise cancelling works really well in my office and the battery life is excellent – which makes the headphones an outrageous success. The not quite so brilliant parts? Although the headphones seem very well built, they’re also pretty heavy and the design isn’t as comfortable as it could be. The narrow headband can press against the top of my head and the ear cups can be a bit uncomfortable. I wear glasses, which probably contributes to the discomfort. For comparison, the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro headphones I use at home are super comfortable – B&W could definitely learn a thing or two. The other thing that’s a little disappointing is the coloured sound of the B&Ws. To my ears, they tend towards sounding ‘thick’ and ‘full’. For some music this really isn’t noticeable, and for music that’s sonically a bit thin it can be quite pleasing, but some tracks that already sound bass heavy and full can become somewhat muddy, indistinct and lacking clarity. Listening to Spotify over Bluetooth with active noise cancelling is never going to be a top level audiophile experience, but a more neural tuning would still have worked better for me. It’s probably a personal thing – I’m sure some folks will prefer this sound, but it’s not quite for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the money These are the best headphones I have tried. They sound fantastic, beautifully detailed and wonderful deep bass. Great battery life (up to 30 hrs) The controls for volume and noise cancelling are well positioned, have a nice feel and are easy to use

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Run them in... Agree with all the comments. Normally I'm a bit cynical about advice in mags to run in amps and speakers etc, as with my Roksan amp and Tannoy speakers I've not noticed any improvement over time. But with the PX7s, I really did notice an improvement after the first hour or two of use. Bought these online in lockdown unseen and unheard, but guess the only criticism would be that where the B&W logo is 'engraved' into the plastic, there is sharp flashing around the letters. I seem to remember that where seatbelt goes into the B-pillar of an Alfa 156 was the same.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it! OK, the B&Ws are expensive, and the noise cancelling isn't quite up there with the Sony's, but what is the point of cutting out noise if you're not going to have top notch sound quality? Don't get me wrong, after extensive instore testing (patient helpful staff at Holborn, as always), the Sony's have a good sound, but still a Sony sound - boomy bass (especially on Spotify / lower quality files, and a rather rounded smooth sound. It's a nice sound, but, compared to these, doesn't quite feel real. The B&W's by contrast let the recording through, be it the detailed dynamism of Mozart (Mackerras / Scottish Chamber Orchestra's peerless recordings for Linn), the smudged dreaminess of Aphex Twin's Xtal (impeccably balanced), to the enveloping aggression of Merzbow (yes, I know - using noise cancelling to listen to noise is perhaps a bit, erm, purist, but the sound is blistering). And the noise cancelling does a perfectly decent job, only failing slightly at the noisiest parts of the Victoria Line (which are very noisy indeed). The sound is worth it.
