When combined with the equally impressive 851E or 851D, the Cambridge Audio 851W power amplifier is quite simply the best sounding Cambridge Audio amplifier ever.

Massive power for effortless sound

Take a look at the figures and it soon becomes clear that, when it comes to power, the 851W isn't going to take any prisoners! With a genuine 200W per channel at 8 ohms the 851W has a cast iron grip on any speaker, no matter how difficult the load. With a 4 ohm load this figure increase to 350W per channel. Use two 851Ws in bridged mono mode and these outputs increase to a jaw-dropping 500W (8 ohms) or 800W (4 ohms) per channel.

Twin toroidal transformers
At its heart, the 851W is powered by twin toroidal power supplies. Separate transformers for the power amplification and input ensure the audio performance is unaffected by large current requirements from powerful and dynamic music from current-hungry speakers. What this means in terms of sound quality is deep, effortless bass with thunderous dynamics on tap.

Terrapin impedance buffering
Cambridge Audio's own Terrapin impedance buffering modules replace the more commonly used op-amps for a further leap in audio quality. Terrapin impedance buffering modules separate amplifier and signal impedance, delivering an even and consistent sound with enhanced separation and imaging.

Class XD amplification
What makes this amplifier extra special is the Class XD amplification. Technically speaking, this combines the best qualities of Class A amplification - smoothness and realism - with the best from Class AB - power and control, without the disadvantages inherent with both designs. What you'll hear is a smooth, yet detailed sound with the ability to drive almost any speaker thanks to its substantial power output.

Full metal casing
Using a full metal casing, with rounded edges, doesn't just look and feel good, it helps the sound, too. The case is rigid and well damped, so it won't resonate unhelpfully. The thick aluminium front panel looks the part and also acts as a shield against electrical interference from sources such as dimmers and RF devices. All these details combine to create an amplifier that not only looks stylish but also offers exceptional resistance to both mechanical and electrical interference.

For an amplifier with power to spare yet the finesse to impress, the Cambridge Audio 851W is in a league of its own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional value power amp Have used (and long term auditioned) various amps over the years including Acurus, Krell, MacIntosh & bought this to replace my DIA 100 MkII (Stereophile mags best integrated amp under $1000 a while back). I needed more power (don't we all) to drive Magneplanar MG1.6QR speakers with 851N as a source. Maggies are a difficult load (around 4 Ohms impedance). What did I gain: significant bass extension, which I liken to the music being built on a massive stone foundation instead of being like built on breeze blocks if you get the inference. What did I lose: apart from the money absolutely zero, all the space, air, separation, neutrality is there. Although I no longer have it I sounded very reminiscent of a Krell amp. But it is very neutral. To hear my Maggies after many years being driven at full steam with this kind of power reserve is fabulous. Build quality is excellent, though it looks a bit boring. Despite the price it is very good value if you compare power and performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound for the money I bought the Cambridge Audio Azur 851W to replace my old Mission amp. Initially I used it with my old IMF Transmission Line Speakers. I was immediately impressed by a much extended and powerful bass. In other words the bass is not at all over emphasised, it just hits you when it's there. Very impressive. The final system is a Naim NAC-N 272 digital/Analogue preamp (A REALLY superb device), The Azur 851W and Focal Aria 926 Floorstanding speakers. This is a really fine combination. If you should end up with this combination I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. This combination of equipment with the Azur 851W in the driving seat provides a superb stereo sound stage of amazing clarity and depth. The remastered Pink Floyd 'The Wall' is presented with an astounding sound stage that I have simply not heard bettered. Amazing. Even at 'Concert Level' volume, the sound is remarkably clear and unstressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Site silent in the backgound I bought this amp with the Azur 851 Network Streamer. The sound from the system is superb. Being connected to my home ethernet, and controlled via the 851N the power amp is just never noticeable. It sits silent and ready when not in use, and comes to life when needed via the network. So I never touch it.....it only makes itself known when the sound powers out. The sound is stunning - clear, superb sound stage, great presence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice amplifier, but see it and try it first. I bought a 651W a while ago and was using it with an old analogue pre-amp. I then bought an 851N to use as a pre-amp and a CXC, to upgrade the whole experience and was very impressed with the build quality and the sound. The sound is really top notch and I highly recommend this approach if you don't use analogue inputs. I then tried a demo 851W at home to see if it was worth the extra. The 851N & 851W combination sounds great and delivers more energy than with the 651W. However, at this level, differences are rather subtle and need good source and speakers to be appreciated. It gives the same listening level with a slightly lower volume setting but also has a bit more detail. It is a step up in sound, but be aware that it is a large unit, needs space above to keep cool, and a deep shelf to stand on. It might sound as good as some amps costing twice the price, but it is still a big purchase. So see it and try it for size and sound before you buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic sound The best sounding amp. Paired with 851n nothing short of remarkable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A first class product worth every penny. This is a superb amplifier and when combined with the Azur 851E pre-amp, it is nothing short of awesome. As a retired professional recording engineer and classical music lover, I have experienced the performance of many amplifiers during my 37 years in the recording business and as far as I'm concerned this one goes to the top of the tree. The depth and clarity of the stereo image is remarkable, what you hear are the musicians pure and simple. At present I am using this with the Cambridge CXU universal player for playing CDs, possibly there might be a slight improvement with the Azur 851C, I have not yet been able to hear this combination so I cannot judge. However, I have heard many far more expensive over hyped pieces of kit that don't even approach the quality of this one. Well done Cambridge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Amp Fantastic looking and sounding amp. I was lucky enough to be able to upgrade to this model because of the Christmas sales for only £50 more. Best deal ever. I should have paid more attention to the connections, as there's only digital ins, which, while great, means I'm one of about 3 people in the UK still trying to buy analogue to digital converters :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cambridge Azur 851E & 851W Had 851E & 2x 851Ws for >1yr driving Linn Isobariks (4 Ohm passive) replacing Linn amps. Wanting more power I demoed Klimax Solos & a Chord SPM1200 but stuck with my Klout. Chord is better but should be at £8k. As for Linn Solos less said the better! Auditioned 851s at Richer Sounds Stockport and bought them. 851W in place of Klout, as hoped, increased grip on the Briks. Tonally similar, a touch brighter in mid & treble, which is good. Real revelation was 851E. Unlike Akurate Kontrol, which loses detail at low volume and sounds grainy at high volume, 851E simply goes quieter or louder. Impressed I ordered a 2nd 851W. 2 bridged are stunning. I've never heard Briks sound so good. Grand piano on St. James Infirmary from Hugh Laurie's "Let Them Talk" has scale, depth & realism I've never previously heard on HiFi. 851E is stunning; no downside. 851W gets hot and driven too hard its protection circuitry cuts in and out. It would be better if it stayed shutdown until cool.
