”A premium music streamer with the performance to match.” ’What Hi-Fi?’ – 5 Star review.

Putting sound quality first

As Cambridge's range-topping network music payer you'd expect the Azur 851N to be pretty special under the lid, and that's exactly what it is! The highest quality sound comes from the use of audiophile quality components and tireless research and testing. As an 8-series design, the 851N uses a substantial toroidal power transformer at its centre. This enables clean, effortless power to be supplied to the other components, allowing them to give their best. High quality Analogue Devices AD1955 DACs (Digital to Analogue Convertors) are configured in dual-mono mode, ensuring maximum channel separation and precise sound-staging.

Fully equipped for High Resolution Audio
At the heart of the 851N is a brand new Zander processor that facilitates 24-bit/192kHz file high resolution streaming from most methods - even Wi-Fi. On top of this, the 851N is compatible with a huge range of high resolution files, including ALAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, WMA, MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+ and OGG Vorbis. The USB audio input also enables streaming of up to 24-bit/192kHz audio and even supports DSD streams from your computer. Originally designed for SACD players, DSD (Direct Stream Digital) encoded music files offer the same detailed, transparent sound as other high resolution file formats, giving you even greater choice of listening.

AFT2 Up-Sampling for the ultimate detail and least jitter
The Cambridge 851N improves sound quality still further with an Anagram Technologies AFT2 24 bit/384 kHz up-sampling circuit. ATF (Adaptive Time Filtering) up-sampling 'stretches' the music to give the highest resolution possible. Up-sampling sound gives a smoother, more relaxed sound quality with added detail. You'll also notice enhanced depth of sound and a more natural quality without the "edge" that can afflict digital music. You'll hear every detail, including every deep breath, squeaky chair and flutter of sheet music; in short, it's like being there for real! AFT2 even aids native 24-bit/192kHz recordings with a faster sampling rate for even less jitter.

What is ATF Upsampling Technology? Click here to learn more.

Connect to Internet radio and Spotify Connect
In addition to supporting over 20,000, easy to access Internet radio stations, the Azur 851N is also compatible with the most popular music streaming services. Spotify is the world's most popular streaming service and the Azur 851N has Spotify Connect integrated into it (Spotify Premium account required). If you subscribe to Spotify Premium, you can control the Cambridge with the powerful Spotify Connect app on your phone or tablet. Should you prefer other music services, the 851N also supports Napster, BBC iPlayer for radio, Aupeo! Pandora and Rhapsody.

AirPlay and optional Bluetooth
In addition to comprehensive streaming capabilities over LAN, Wi-Fi and USB, the 851N is also compatible with Apple's AirPlay streaming. Use it with your iPhone, iPad PC or Mac and wireless stream your iTunes library or other compatible music services. Connect up the optional BT100 dongle and you'll be able to stream your music from any smartphone, tablet or other device with Bluetooth built-in.

Built-in digital pre-amp - just add active speakers!
If you're seeking quality hi-fi from a minimal system then the built-in digital pre-amp will appeal. Simply add active speakers via the digital or analogue outputs and you'll be able to control the volume and balance via the Azur 851N.

Fully connected, including XLR balanced sockets and 5 USBs
When it comes to connectivity the 851N lives up to its 8-series 'reference' billing. The highlight is the fitment of XLR balanced sockets. When used with a compatible amplifier, such as the matching Cambridge Audio 851A, these connections give the ultimate link possible, with greatly improved resistance to interference. There are also AES/EBU balanced digital input/output sockets for the ultimate digital connections. Added to this there are no fewer than five USB interfaces! The front-mounted socket is ideal for connecting temporary devices such as USB media sticks. At the back, three interfaces take care of more permanently connected media devices plus the optional Bluetooth dongle port. A Type B asynchronous USB input is provided for the direct connection of your PC or Mac. This makes the ideal connection for hooking up your computer as it will effectively 'control' the PC's output for the best sound quality possible. This greatly reduces jitter and gives the highest quality sound possible from your computer audio. Finally, both optical and coaxial digital sockets are provided for both inputs (x2) and outputs. This lets you connect up other digital components and take advantage of the quality DAC built into the 851N.

Intuitive app interface and colour display
With a free Apple/Android app you have effortless control over the radio stations with the comfort of your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad or Android device. The app also seamlessly manages all your streaming content and is, in effect, a very user friendly way of bringing together and controlling all your digital sources. Boasting a new colour screen, it's now possible to display album art on the player. This makes it a pleasure to browse for albums and artists by whichever control system you use.

Full metal casing with extensive damping
Using a full metal casing, with rounded edges, doesn't just look and feel good, it helps the sound, too. The case is rigid and well damped, meaning that it won't resonate unhelpfully. The thick aluminium front panel looks the part and also acts as a shield against electrical interference from sources such as dimmers and RF devices. All these details combine to create a network player that not only looks stylish but also offers exceptional resistance to both mechanical and electrical interference.

A first-rate performer in every respect, the flagship Cambridge Azur 851N network player is the audiophile's choice of streamer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive sound and build quality! I had originally purchased the CAMBRIDGE AUDIO CXN V2 - a nice unit -but was not that thrilled with the sound... Richer Sounds was great and agreed to switch it for the AZUR 851N one week after the original purchase. This unit is impressive in terms of functionality and the DAC is impressive for the price range. In addition to 192/24 you also get DSD64 (not present on the CXN) and more inputs. ROON works extremely well (my music server is my Mac) with a wired internet connection. And I have my DAP connected to the USB input - also clear sound with great quality. Highly recommended. I can not really find any negatives at this price range.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great machine good value for money I purchased one of the first 851N, s. It, s a great machine. But what is just as important is the support and software upgrades which are still going on to this day. A lot of manufacturers change models every one ore two years and have a limited time of softwaresupport is my experience. I think cambridge goes

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fantastic piece of kit I am just blown away by this streamer. It has replaced my old pre-amp but it's connected to the power amp. The difference is remarkable. The CD player even sounds much better, being connected digitally so just using the DACs in the streamer. Overall control using apps on my phone, including streaming, is remarkable. It is getting the best out of my very good speakers too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great network player I got the 815N for about a week now and is already the main - centrepiece of my hi-fi system. Alongside 815W power amplifier that I've purchased a few months ago, the 815N is an outstanding network player and also a great pre-amp. There's no need to say that you can play almost every music format that you can think of. Streaming services like Spotify, Tidal and Qobuz are preloaded into the system inputs. There are plenty of digital connection to chose from to connect your TV, CD player and other devices. The functionality of the player is straightforward and intuitive. Good quality remote control with lighten buttons for ease of use in dark rooms. Altogether I am very, very pleased with this machine that is reproducing an amazing sound at low and high volume as well and is very easy to use. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves high quality sound music.Thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Build and Sound Quality I already have a CXN-V2 which is very good, but the 851n is a real step up in terms of the build and sound quality. The only downside I can see is that, unlike the CXN, it does not have Chromecast built in. However, this does not affect me as I use Qobuz Hi Res, which is built into the media platform of the 851n.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Frustrated. I have posted a review previously, having bought my 851n about 2 and a half years ago. I praised the 851n for it's sound quality and also mentioned what appeared to be bulletproof build quality. However, that build quality I now have reason to question. After 2 and a bit years of flawless performance my 851n has developed a horrible hiss in both channels on start up. The only way to make it stop is to unplug it and that sometimes takes a couple of attempts and a factory reset has had no effect. Today I realised that the right channel is quieter than the left and is missing most of the bottom end and now I know it's happening I can't un-hear it. I don't want to be too hard on CA because when it behaves as it should it sounds absolutley amazing. But the fact is I paid some serious money for the 851n and expect better and having read some of the other reviews here it seems like I'm not the only one with this problem. Doubly frustrating as the 2 year CA warranty ran out before it started playing up and the VIP 6 year guarentee doesn't seem to apply to Hi-Fi. Would I Recommend? When working, definitely. When it's like mine is at the moment,it's difficult to say yes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brings music alive So I bought the Azur 851-N and 851-A from the Belfast store. This was to replace a yamaha rn602, that i bought to see if streaming is for me (it is!!) The build quality of both units is fantastic. The whole thing is made from aluminium plates (top and sides too), and really feels like an expensive piece of kit. The 851N was extremely easy to set up, and I had it streaming from a NAS in minutes. Normally my streaming service of choice is Tidal, and it works really well in the new Stream magic App. (if you are using the cambridge connect app.. stop.. and upgrade to stream magic). The screen looks fantastic! The 851A is all analog, with no DACs and just analog inputs. You can change the name of the inputs on the display which is a nice touch. Some questions I had when purchasing was did i need two remotes? The answer is no, the 851N remote will change the source and the volumne on the 851A (and turn it on and off). The stream magic app will also change the volume on the the 851A if you have the remote interconnect between the two (a cable for this comes with it). I have this set up using a rega p3, CA MM phono preamp, Monitor Audio Bronze 6 speakers and AudioQuest interconnects. How do they sound.... well. Can i use bold words on this review? Its F****** amazing! I went through a list of music on the CA website, and all the things it said to watch for were there. Daft Punk – Get Lucky, sounded like an extremely well recorded piece, English Chamber Orchestra - Dido & Aeneas, Act 3: But Death, Alas, the spatial seperation was there, Lou Reed – Walk on the Wild Side made me tap my foot, Beck – Morning the bass was amazing, so clear not over the top.. silky would be the word. Ive been hearing things in music ive listened to for years that ive never heard before. I spent sunday listening to every Pink Floyd album on vinyl, and just couldnt stop! I know these records intimately, and it really felt like i was listening to them for the first time. (PS the vinyl set up is great, its dead quite, no hums and no messing around with grounding to improve things) Even my wife came in the other day and said "wow... what did you do? That sounds amazing!" And sat down for two hours and listened to streamed music with me. One thing Im loving, at a lower volume, it STILL sounds fantastic. You dont need to turn it up to get yourself to feel the music, the feeling is always there. It brings the music alive, the way it was ment to be heard. The big question is, is this worth the money? YES... YES IT IS!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great at first Had my untit just over 3 years now paired with the 851a, initially I would of said 5star amazing sound but over the past 12 months the right hand channel would produce no sound on start up. After several minutes you would get a hiss and sound would eventually come through. Now I get no sound at all through the right channel... Not what you expect for over a grand after 3 years, I have a techics hifi over 20 years old that still works perfectly... Would I recommend this product, hard to say!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazed and Confused! I bought the 851n to replace a cheaper and also highly regarded streamer as I felt that I needed something more in line price wise with the rest of my set up. I have a Roksan Blak amplifier and Dynaudio Special Forty speakers. I bought the 851n online for a good price and was originally sold by Richer Sounds Sheffield. I did a lot of research in choosing this streamer after reading numerous reviews. Overall I’m very happy with it and probably don’t even use half of it’s features. I don’t store any files, but just download music and the sound quality is excellent. I use Tidal Hi-Fi Quality(the more expensive option) as this means that I can get high resolution or MQA(Masters Quality Authenticated) streaming or can I? It’s all a bit confusing because since buying the streamer I’ve been on various forums, read customer reviews and been on the Cambridge Audio website. The CA website recommends using Tidal Hi-Fi tier, but I’ve also found out that the 851n’s DACs won’t decode MQA files, which I feel is defeating the object. I’ve read though that the 851n has ATF upsampling which makes the most of any music file played through it, so it really does sound good, whether playing a CD quality(16 bit) or an MQA(24 bit) recording. Another gripe that I have is with the Steammagic app which doesn’t really support Tidal. I can get Tidal through it, but it’s via AirPlay and when playing music through it, you don’t know whether it’s playing a CD quality or high resolution(MQA) recording. And the same goes for tha CA Connect app. The best app that I’ve found to use, thanks to reading a forum is the Mconnect app for streaming Tidal. I use an iPad or my Samsung phone as a remote control and when playing music it will display on screen as to what resolution the music is playing. MQA files will be displayed as MQA Original 96khz. So, to summarise I’m very happy with the 851n. It all depends on the recording obviously, but can be outstanding with some recordings, even CD quality. I’m just confused as to whether I’m getting the best out of it with regard to streaming Tidal, hence the four stars rather than five.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this purchase Have only had the Azur 851N for a week now but I have been very pleased with the sound quality and features. I replaced a Stream Magic 6 and the difference is very notable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fabulous Sound. Easy to set up I bought the Azur 851N to replace a Logitech Transporter which had given great service for 10 years. I assumed (correctly) that the DAC technology would result in much improved sound. The reviews for the Azur were consistently good and I liked the idea of buying British. Sure enough, the sound quality is superb, and the set up via my iPad could not have been easier. I would give the unit 5 stars, but the is not yet direct access to Amazon Music HD via the Azur, and so I have to use Apple Play if I want to stream from Amazon. Cambridge Audio have told me that they have plans to include Amazon HD into the Stream Magic app in 2020, so then it would be a 5-star item. Great bit of kit! NB. I bought the unit through Richer Sounds in Brighton. Very good service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of equipment! I’ve only just bought this and have found it easy to use. I keep adding to my playlist it’s so easy and I’m a complete novice! The sound is great and I can now listen to hours of all my favourite tracks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sound - scope to improve on CA's manuals Bought the 851N after useful demo comparing it with CA's CXN streamer. As you would hope, the more expensive 851 provides a more transparent abd detailed sound with sources such as Spotify and internet radio. Now we have the unit installed we continue to be very pleased with this performance. Setting the unit up for other sources has been problematic because the support literature appears in some cases out of date or misleading - in the first instance, regrding setting up an alternative streaming service, such as BBC Sounds. I think we now have this working with help from the Southampton team rather than the online documentation and the purchase of a bluetooth dongle, so this is more a comment about the CA material than the unit itself. Overall though we are pleased with the purchase and look forward to getting to know it better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic sound and easy to use Have had this unit for a few weeks now, and Have found the streaming quality on music and radio clear and solid, I also use the built in DAC to play my tv sound through, what a huge difference in sound quality. It’s so impressive my sister has one on order from Richer Sounds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb piece of kit. Had this only going on for two weeks at the time of writing this and I'm shocked at how good the sound quality is. First I used it as a dac from a cd transport and to my amazement it betters my 4.5k all valve dac with more detail more drive, better seperation with more weight to the sound. As a streamer sound quality is top notch. Haven't tried it as a pre amp yet. In my humble opinion the 851 is worth the asking price just for the dac, superb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Features I didn’t know I was getting! I bought this from the Guildford branch and it’s proved to be a great purchase. Easy to connect to my B&O speakers and to my LAN, I was streaming from all my devices within minutes. Sound quality is excellent - I’m hearing aspects to my music which I hadn’t noticed previously. And features I didn’t realise I was getting - volume levelling for one. Thanks to the team at Guildford for recommending it and for their support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality product. Great value. Can really tell the difference between this and lesser music streamers. I took some convincing that streaming at higher rate would make such a difference but as soon as I heard the 851n I was convinced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Class Network Player! I purchased this a couple of weeks ago and it’s been used in excess of 30 hours already! It has a very clear natural and revealing sound, with excellent timing and detail. It could have an edginess in the treble if partnered with components of a similar sound. However, this matches up well with warmth, refinement and scale of my Arcam A39 amplifier and Quad 21L2 loudspeakers. I listen to my music collection via a portable hard drive via usb and every aspect of the sound has improved in comparison with my Arcam CD192 player! It squeezes every last drop of information from 16bit/44.1 tracks, but is incredibly impressive with high resolution files. fans of radio will be not only be impressed with the number and variety of stations, but also the quality; which trounces DAB! The DAC section also matches the already high standards of the player and will take sky and blu ray to another level. The build quality of the unit is solid and handsome, with a clear and bright display. Top marks to the Cambridge app also, as I hardly use the supplied remote! If you are in the market for this type of product, buy with confidence, as in my opinion, there is little else below two grand that can touch it. Finally, excellent, informative and friendly service from Dawn and her staff at the Lichfield branch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Azur 851n A fantastic Streamer Bought the 851n as I thought i needed to move into the world of streaming and away from my CD and vinyl based hi Fi system, so glad I did. I needed some advice from the team at RS Preston and that was given both freely and honestly - as always. I have had it now for a week or so and in that time it has done everything that I had been advised it would do from the hi fi reviews and the sales team and allows me to listen at CD quality to music that I either had years ago and discarded, music that I have on my wish list and music from newer artists to me. I like that fact that I can simply swap around from album to album, listen to single songs or playlists and by using tidal Master also listen to music at the highest resolution the 851n allows. This is a great piece of kit, a bit on the large side but relatively easy to use with the Cambridge Audio and streaming service apps on my tablet, phone and iPad. I use Tidal and Spotify on a trial basis at the moment and will probably stay with Tidal once these have finished. I can fully recommend the 851n to anyone who’s system will get the most benefit from it and I am so glad that i took the plunge into the new streaming world although I’m sure I’ll still buy some vinyl. Any issues? Well I have had to upgrade my basic BB to a faster one as i found that some songs stopped and started during play but there’s other bonuses to me from doing so as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb, streamer, pre-amp DAC Why buy three boxes when this beauty does it all? Simple set up.Excellent sound quality from connected server in pre-amp DAC mode, all the inputs you could wish for and in addition to RCA outputs Balanced Audio via XLR. Streaming services set up simple and reliable. Only slight quibble is the overall depth of the unit including the Wi-Fi dongle, it doesn't fit in a standard AV cabinet (like Ikea) unless the back is removed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A review in 2 parts.... Let me clarify that title, 5 star service and support from the team in Glasgow and special thanks to David for his pre and post sale support. The 851N is a superlative network streamer with high end sound quality, build quality and features. You can't go wrong with the player...once you have a fault free example. 1 star for Cambridge Audio factory quality control...first player was missing the Azur 851N graphic from the front panel, 1st replacement had a very noticeable 'hum' coming from the unit...dodgy transformer I assume...2nd replacement is perfect. Not what you should expect from any manufacturer.....but reiterating those 5 stars to Richer Sounds Glasgow for advice and ease of return and replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile, well made, great sound. I've been using this for about a week now, and I can say I am very pleased with it's performance. Tidal streams flawlessly, and at full 16bit CD quality with no glitches whatsoever. I am also using it as a DAC to my CD player and television. It can be used a preamp for direct connection to a main amp, but I like that it can be put into a bypass mode, so I can connect it to my Azur 840 analogue preamp. I still need an analogue preamp because I need to be able to connect my turntable and reel to reel tape recorder, so this makes it a lot easier. There are literally thousands of internet radio stations available to stream directly. I mostly stream BBC stations, Radio 2 and 4, and the bit rate of 320Kbps seems to sound better than my DAB radio, which I have now taken out of the system. The remote control supplied is very comprehensive and feels sturdy and well made, but I am really not using it as much as the Cambridge Connect android app that seems to work well, and is the best way to search for music on either Tidal or Spotify anyway. There is little not to like about the 851N. Cambridge have come a long way in recent times, and I can highly recommend even though some may think the price is on the high side. I just hope that Cambridge support this product with good firmware updates well into the future, and don't pull the trick that most smartphone manufacturers do, and pull support after a couple of years to try and force an expensive upgrade. That wouldn't endear me to them. But thus far, my Azur 840E/W Pre/Power amp have been running flawlessly for some years now, and I have no reason to think the 851N won't either.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's such a lovely product the 851N streamer... ...superb sound and insightful delivery. The Cambridge Connect App works to control it. This App is the only problem. For instance it just does not let me save or like any tracks on Tidal or others. I've contacted customer services. No plans to include this feature and I'm told to use an Apple device instead of my Pixel 3 and stream the content via Bluetooth? via Bluetooth? - this is a network streamer and I’m not an Apple customer. So I listen to my 2018 What Hi-Fi streamer (Streamer of the year 2018 @ £1399) and cannot ask it to remember tracks I like on my favorite Hi-Res Apps? That wasn't mentioned in the What Hi-Fi review or by Richer Sounds. My Denon and Yamaha devices in other rooms support this? What gives Cambridge?!
