"I seriously doubt you'll find more clarity, drive and capacity to entertain in an integrated amp at this price." 'Hi-Fi Choice - Recommended'. Tested at £750.

Top end components

Lift the lid on the Cambridge CXA80 and you'll find components and technology that would usually only be found on much more expensive designs. At its heart is a fully symmetrical Class A/B amplifier, which ensures a precise, even sound with excellent separation between the right and left channels.

Toroidal transformer
Powering the amp is a large toroidal power transformer with separate, dual-mono windings. Separate winding for the left and right channels creates a clarity and imaging more reminiscent of amplifiers from a class or two above. Renowned for their low noise, high efficiency and superior sound quality, the over-sized transformer gives the CXA80 a powerful, dynamic sound and a hefty 80W per channel power output - enough to drive most speakers to high levels in pretty much all domestic environments.

Built-in DAC
The Cambridge CXA80 has been to work just as well with digital sources as analogue ones. Cambridge has fitted a high quality Wolfson WM8740 DAC chipset for sound that could actually improve the sound of your existing digital sources. With two optical digital inputs and one coaxial one, you can connect up to three digital sources, such as games console, TV and a CD transport such as the matching Cambridge CXC.

Asynchronous USB
A further highlight of the CXA80's spec is the asynchronous USB socket at the rear. This makes the ideal connection for hooking up your computer, as it will effectively 'control' the PC's output for the best sound quality possible. This greatly reduces jitter and gives the highest quality sound possible from your computer audio.

Optional Bluetooth
Add the optional Cambridge BT100 Bluetooth dongle (cost option) and you'll be able to enjoy Bluetooth connectivity with your Bluetooth-equipped devices. Not only will the music from your Bluetooth device sound superb through the unit's sophisticated DAC technology, but as it uses the higher grade Bluetooth aptX CODEC, it will be as close in quality as its possible to get to a conventional wired connection.

Plenty of analogue inputs
More usually found on 'reference' hi-fi and professional equipment, the CXA80 boasts balanced XLR inputs. When connected to a suitable source, this gives a fully balanced, hot/cold, connection for the ultimate analogue signal quality. The Cambridge CXA80 also has four line level inputs: easily enough for the vast majority of systems. An added bonus is the 3.5mm, front-mounted input, perfect for connecting an MP3 player or smartphone for convenient playback. Other handy connections include an RCA subwoofer output, headphone socket and connections for two pairs of speakers.

Sleek style
The CXA80 is part of the totally redesigned CX-Series. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXA80 a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the matching CD transport and network player. Yet it's far more than just a good-looking case; it helps the sound quality, too. With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the amp from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise.

If you've been looking for an amp with the finest sound quality without compromising connectivity, you need look no further. The Cambridge CXA80 has it all!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good solid sound, lots of connect options Easy to set up and easy to use. Plenty of depth and draws out that bit extra detail from my old vinyl. Some function buttons are dual purpose so worthwhile reading instructions. Remote user friendly. Need dongle for bluetooth! Overall very good value for money and it works really well with turntable and speakers I bought at the same time. Well done RS Newcastle

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Sound and Features If like me you are looking to upgrade from the budget integrated that sits in the 150-250 pounds class then I can recommend this amplifier. The amp is designed as a dual mono amp - left and right channels are kept totally separate and you can hear it in the sound quality it produces. I'm not going to try and describe it but trust me - you will hear your favourite tracks in great detail and dynamic drive. I have the amp driving a pair of monitor audio silver 6's and its a partnership that makes performers sound like a live event. The amp also has a built in DAC, this is not a cheapo chip as a gimmick but a high quality Wolfson chip that is found in some very exotic gear - google it and do some research. I run my cd player as a transport and let the amp do the decoding, it has 2 optical inputs for this purpose. Overall I cannot see how you will get a better feature set for under a 1000 pounds.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent amp to put at the centre of everything The CXA80 was not as heavily praised by What HiFi magazine as the cheaper CXA60. Presumably this was on the basis of the price differential and the additional features the CXA80 offered over the CXA60 not being worthy of the step up in price. The addition of i) a high quality DAC, ii) xlr inputs, and iii) separated transformer taps for left and right channels are welcomed features. Also, there is additional 20w of power output. These features for me were worth the difference between the CXA60 and CXA80, however I appreciate the need for greater connections and power is subjective. On the sound quality, there is an argument that more powerful amplifiers operating at lower volumes are likely to perform better in the long-run that less powerful amplifiers being pushed to their limits constantly. If we are compring a 60w to an 80w amp this differential is marginal however. Overall this is a great amp that can sit at the heart of any home entertainment setup and sounds good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sound in vinyl, MP3 and radio I initially wanted to go for the Cambridge amplifier in the top range (I can't remember the code), but it was too expensive (like £1,400). So I went one down a price in the same category. Anyway, am very pleased with the CXA80. The sound is great, you can hear the bass, musical instruments, drums, singing, everything that was average on your alarm radio clock / MP3 headphones now sounds amazing. It's a pleasure to listen to. The guys were really helpful in the shop too in Chiswick. Helping carry the stuff into the car and then being accommodating when I made a mistake with assembling the vinyl player I bought.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dont see what the fuss is about So, these get good WHF reviews, but on listening with some Dalis I wasnt blown away. They dont provide a realistic sound, and are too bright. The Arcam was soo much better. On the Arcam you heard the instruments, the notes played, the compositon of the note and their spacing. On this, it sounded like a replay of a flac file from 2 sound generators. Might be ok with some speakers, but if accurate reproduction is your thing then look elsewhere.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great amplifier for streaming from an iPhone/ iPad I purchased this amp after several weeks of research to establish which manufacturer sold the most appropriate model to drive my " old " Celestion A2 speakers, and I wanted to stream music on my iPad or iPhone through an AppleTV unit. I settled on the CXA80 because of its higher power output and two optical inputs. After establishing that I needed to purchase optical digital cables,( not included with the amp) one for the Apple TV box to the amp, and the second from my new UHD tv to the amp, it only took a matter of minutes to set the system up and running. For most of my music, the performance of the amp and speaker system is first class and easily matches the sound quality of the old Quad system that used to drive the speakers. However as ever, the sound out, is only as good as the source, and the new amp certainly showed up the deficiencies in some of my albums ripped from older CDs! Overall though I am very pleased with the amp and would certainly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent detail, good styling & features, transformed my listening I selected this amp because it seemed to offer so much in the way of connections. My old amp (at least 15 yrs old) appeared to be veiling the sound and was all analogue and I wanted to be able to stream from computer and the Cambridge offered that. What I was not expecting was the large improvement all round in the overall presentation. This transformed the sound from my CD player to the extent of going back thro' my cd's again and rediscovering them absolutely marvellous. This amplifier was bought after reading the review of CXA60 and I took a chance the 80 would be the as good great decision even though I did not listen to it before buying. It also has enough power to cope with most speakers that I am currently thinking of buying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound through USB A great amplifier with energetic sound. I use it with Elac FS 147, and the sound quality is increased; full-bodied and clear. Previously, I had issues with bass. Now it's there; turn it to 11 and you will not only hear but feel it too. The mid has nice resolution and the high is also very pleasant. I use the amplifier as an external sound card via USB; the DAC is very good too.
