RIGOROUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL FOR POWERFUL, DETAILED SOUND

Lift the lid on the Cambridge CXA80 and you’ll find components and technology that would usually only be found on much more expensive designs. At its heart is a fully symmetrical Class A/B amplifier. This ensures a precise, even sound with excellent separation between the right and left channels. Powering the amp is a large toroidal power transformer with separate, dual-mono windings. By having separate windings for left and right channels, the symmetrical amplifier design is enhanced still further, with the clarity and imaging more reminiscent of amplifiers from a class or two above. Renowned for their low noise, high efficiency and superior sound quality, the over-sized transformer also helps give the CXA80 its powerful, dynamic sound and a hefty 80 watts per channel power output. This is enough to drive most speakers to high levels in pretty much all domestic environments.

BUILT-IN DAC FOR DIGITAL DELIGHT

The Cambridge CXA80 has been designed from scratch to work just as well with your digital sources as it is your analogue ones. This means that Cambridge have gone to the trouble of fitting a high quality DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) inside the amp. Usually found in their dedicated DacMagic range, the Wolfson WM8740 DAC chipset offers high quality sound that could actually improve the sound of your existing digital sources. With two optical digital inputs and one coaxial one, you can connect up to three digital sources, such as games console, TV and a CD transport such as the matching Cambridge CXC.

ASYNCHRONOUS USB AUDIO

A further highlight of the CXA80’s spec is the asynchronous USB socket at the rear. This makes the ideal connection for hooking up your computer as it will effectively 'control' the PC's output for the best sound quality possible. This greatly reduces jitter and gives the highest quality sound possible from your computer audio.

OPTIONAL BLUETOOTH

Add the optional Cambridge BT100 Bluetooth dongle (cost option) and you’ll be able to enjoy Bluetooth connectivity with your Smartphone, tablet, laptop, computer or other compatible device. Not only will the music from your Bluetooth device sound superb through the unit’s sophisticated DAC technology but it is also compatible with the higher grade Bluetooth aptX CODEC - used on many of the latest devices. This enhanced form of Bluetooth transmission is designed to give the highest audio quality and gets the closest yet to a conventional wired connection.

FLEXIBLE ANALOGUE CONNECTIVITY INCLUDING BALANCED XLR INPUTS

Just because it has class-leading digital connectivity doesn’t mean that Cambridge has forgotten about analogue connectivity – far from it, in fact! More usually found on ‘reference’ hi-fi and professional equipment, the CXA80 boasts balanced XLR inputs. When connected to a suitable source, this gives a fully balanced, hot/cold, connection for the ultimate analogue signal quality. The Cambridge CXA80 also has four line level inputs: easily enough for the vast majority of systems. An added bonus is the 3.5mm, front-mounted input. This is perfect for connecting up your MP3 player or smartphone for quick and convenient playback. Other handy connections include an RCA subwoofer output, headphone socket and connections for two pairs of speakers.

SLEEK STYLE

The CXA80 is part of the totally redesigned CX-Series. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXA80 a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the matching CD transport and network player. Yet it’s far more than just a good-looking case; it helps the sound quality, too. With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the amp from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise.

If you’ve been looking for an amp with the finest sound quality without compromising connectivity, you need look no further. The Cambridge CXA80 has it all!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal sound & enough oomph to make me happy I had been holding off replacing a vintage Audiolab 8000a amp, which I loved for twenty odd years. I found it very difficult to admit that these modern things could do a better job! When that finally started giving me too much trouble, I visited RS to plump for this beauty. They gave me a very good deal (as always). The decision was relatively easy after trawling reviews. I had already delved into the CX range with the CXN and had been very, very pleased with it so this was a natural choice. Honestly, the sound is phenomenal from the CXA80 - so pleased that I bought it as it gives constant pleasure to me. I listen to a big range of musical genres from classical to rock, jazz to funk and dance and haven't found fault. All sources put through it to date have sounded well rounded, detailed and well paced/timed. I am driving 2 sets of speakers (not often at the same time) so the ability to feed them both was essential. Through my Quads, the sound is absolutely sublime. There is a host of input options for most kit...The only thing it lacked was a phono stage so I bought a second hand Nad to sort that out. It really does sing. Quality of build is wonderful. Very solid. Buttons and knobs simple and well considered (My seven year old can work it without any bother). Remote control is high calibre also (often overlooked these days). A happy punter

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superbly Articulate Having owned an M Series Myryad bi-amped setup (MI120/MA120/MC100 CD player) for around 20yrs, I was most upset when the integrated amp finally failed after years of solid use and pleasure. I considered this to be a mid level system which, for me, approached the ceiling of worthwhile high fidelity gains for the costs involved. ...After having auditioned the CX80 alongside the less expensive CX60, both using the dedicated CXC CD Transport, I was blown away by articulate, neutral, dynamic and spacious sounds produced by the CX80. Well worth the extra cost over the CX60 which is still a very decent amp, but the difference was remarkable! I think it's down to the two completely separate mono signal paths in the CX80, along with the extra power, which really opens up the soundstage beautifully. I ended up also buying the dedicated CXC CD Transport (which utilises the impressive DAC built into the amp) because these two components together were pulling information out my CDs that I'd just never really heard before. So I totally blew my original budget, but I don't regret it for a moment. It pairs really well with my faithful old TDL RTL3 floor standers too, and has revitalised my entire CD collection. The only minor issue is that it does tend to reveal poorly recorded material more, but mostly it makes everything I play sound revitalised, dynamic, and richly detailed. Due to sets of both analogue and digital inputs, and built in DAC, this amp is pretty versatile and 'future proof'. Works well with TV, Movies, etc. as long as you are content with stereo rather than multi channel AV, which is more than enough for me. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great amp Bought this amp having listened to it on the shelf in store and has surpassed my expectations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb value and performance I am sure some people spend thousands of pounds on equipment but I found that purchasing the Cambridge amp and CD transport to play my collection through suits my living space and requirements adequately for now. I am still breaking in the speakers so to speak so will not be able to really tell whether the sound clarity meets my expectations yet - however, after having to listen to music on an iPhone or through the TV for a while now there is no comparison to enjoying music via a sound system like this rather than just enduring noise through flimsy ear pods or even headphones of reasonable repute. Excellent service and aftercare from the staff of Richer Sounds, Southampton (Marco and Tom in particular need to be singled out for special mention for their unfailing ability to explain things, try out various machines et al - outstanding customer service in my view). The Cambridge CD transport, Denon 300 turntable and Monitor Audio Silver 50 speakers completed my package. I am thoroughly enjoying rediscovering my CD collection once more as it should be heard ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A happy accident Until recently, I had a Cambridge Audio Azur stereo amp. Unfortunately, I had a senior moment and spilt a soft drink into it. Robbed of one of my favourite pastimes ie listening to concerts streamed from the internet, I had to look around for a replacement. Sadly, the Azur model is no longer made. After a great deal of internetting, I settled on another Cambridge Audio amp, namely the cxa 80. I use my stereo amp, linked to my laptop, so that the laptop becomes a home entertainment centre. For that reason, I wanted an amp which would, effectively, bypass the computer's internal soundcard, convert digital to analogue and then output to loudspeakers. The Azur did that and, I thought, did it well. However, the cxa does it so much better. There is huge headroom and the amp has tremendous punch and clarity. It is linked to a pair of Wharfedale Diamond speakers and the combination gives me the best stereo I have ever heard. If the accident had not happened, it is unlikely I would have upgraded for a long time. Clouds and silver linings. Iain Martin
