”A great first turntable.” ’What Hi-Fi?’ 2019 award-winner.

Focused on sound quality. Pure and simple

Putting engineering excellence above ‘bells and whistles’, the Pro-Ject Primary E is designed for the best sound quality at its price. The deck features a high quality 230 volt motor for smooth running. The main bearing is made from stainless steel and runs within a Teflon-coated bronze bushing. This type of engineering quality is usually reserved for much more expensive decks and helps give the Primary E its class-leading sound quality.

A winner made better
Already a multi-award-winner, the Primary E now uses a totally revised motor for purer sound. Out go the old plug-based power supply and 9v motor to be replaced by a superior, directly connected 230v motor previously used in higher spec Project decks. Without an external power supply and the necessary processing, the new Primary E offers a low distortion, and extremely stable sound.

Easy set-up
Despite offering genuine hi-fi sound, the Primary E is designed for ease of use. From unboxing, all that's needed is for the platter to be placed on the bearing, the belt attached, the stylus guard removed and you're good to play. Both cartridge and counter weight are already fixed so there's no need for complicated adjustments.

Factory-fitted Ortofon cartridge
This deck comes pre-fitted with a top-brand Ortofon OM 1S cartridge. Giving smooth, natural sound quality, the OM 1S tracks smoothly and sounds musical. As part of the Optimum Match (OM) range, the stylus is upgradable to 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 models, giving plenty of scope for future upgrading.

Simple is best
In a classic case of form following function, the Project Primary E offers effortless style through its pared down minimalism. Unlike like some, though, it’s not so pared back that it doesn’t feature a lid – a smart acrylic lid is standard with the Primary E.

The ideal starter turntable, the Project Primary E is still the perfect introduction to vinyl seduction.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great entry level turntable I needed to replace a hand me down turntable and bought to is based on reviews. I already had a phonostage so didn’t need to buy the next model up. The player played a record that previously skipped with ease and improved against my old player. Really easy to setup except for the band which was trickey to start with. I thought this may cause issues moving forward but three weeks later no issues with changing speed. The rca is attached so there isn’t much scope for upgrades if that’s your bag so geared towards beginners.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crystal clear sound at a budget price I bought the Primary E as an upgrade to a basic ‘Supermarket’ model and I can’t believe the difference it has made to the listening experience. Most of my vinyl is 30 odd years old and like many, I am familiar with every hiss, crack and pop but listening to them now is like a whole new experience. I love the lack of automation and the clean minimalist design, the tone arm lowering mechanism is a delight to watch as the needle gracefully kisses the vinyl after a gentle descent. So it looks good and sounds amazing, I only wish I’d upgraded sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a difference!! Decided to update turntable after many years. This was a recommendation by a friend and what a find ! Also bought Pro-Ject Phono Box to play through my NAD amp and Mission speakers and what a difference in sound ! For this price I really didn’t think there could be such an improvement but there really is. So glad I went for it and an absolute bargain at this price. Only tiny draw back is fitting the belt but just a bid fiddly, no big deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really wanna see those fingers Loving it. Classy, excellent sound quality, great build, very easy to set up, one minor quibble though - the belt. If you have big fingers and are fond of a malt or three while listening you will probably pull the belt off and it's a begger to get it back on. You have to be very nimble removing LPs and on new vinyl the centre spindle gets a bit stuck. However having upgraded from the Sony PS-LX300USB it looks and sounds a million times better. Let's face it life's too short for copying vinyl to digital, I'll get the wean to do it when she's older.
