”Want great sound and the option to rip your vinyl in hi-res? This turntable has it all.”– ‘What Hi-Fi’ 2018 award winner.

High Resolution revolution – from record to DSD file

The Sony PSHX500 encapsulates the very best of old and new technologies by being able to record from vinyl to DSD Hi-Res Audio. Equipped with an ADC (Analogue to Digital Convertor) the Sony plugs into your laptop or PC via USB, where discs are recorded in High Resolution. With file quality up to PCM 192kHz/24-bit or DSD 5.6MHz, your stored records now have the potential to sound every bit as good as the finest quality digital audio.

Enjoy your records - any time at home or on the move
Once you’ve recorded your vinyl to Hi-Res audio files you can enjoy them in many places. Upload to a Walkman or other Hi-Res portable player and you can take the music with you or play it through your car stereo. Alternatively, store the music on a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device and you’ll be able to effortless access all your records via a huge range of wireless, network connected music devices, such as Sonos or Heos.

Built in phono stage lets you connect up to any AUX input
Thanks to the built-in phono stage, playing records directly through your hi-fi is easy. Simply connect up to any line level AUX input and let the Sony equalise the sound to the correct level.

High quality deck for reduced distortion
Much more than just a method of converting vinyl to Hi-Res digital, the Sony PS-HX500 is a fine spinner of records in its own right. Rather than being built from flimsy plastic, Sony uses a 30mm thick, acoustic-grade MDF base – just like the dedicated turntable manufacturers use. This gives the deck exceptional rigidity and damping characteristics, benefiting the sound through reduced distortion.

New tonearm for accurate tracking
The high quality tonearm features a new design of integrated headshell for improved sound. The shell’s lightweight structure helps to optimise sound across the frequency range and improve tracking of bass notes, while its rounded shape helps deliver pure sound through lower distortion.

Hear the best of vinyl wherever you are, with Hi-Res recordings made via this revolutionary Sony.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Neat, simple and good sound I bought the Sony to replace a Stanton that was very good but was just a bit untidy because it didn’t have a cover - other than a cotton dust cloth which in itself was a magnet for dirt. Not much difference between the two in terms of sound, but the Sony is much better from a purely visual perspective. Got it on a deal so am very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive in every respect; a great purchase. This turntable received favourable reviews when researching USB turntables for the prime purpose of transferring my vinyl records to digital copies. The turntable received consistent results along with the another (Audio Technica LP5 USB) turntable I decided to visit Richer Sounds as the prices were competitive and also the consistently positive reviews of its stores. At its Cheltenham store I was assisted by Richard who showed me the turntables I was interested, giving pros and cons of each, largely around belt drive verses direct drive turntables. The engineer in me favoured the belt drive in as much that it is less likely to transmit motor noise as is the risk with direct drive turntables. I had no need of an automatic turntable. The clinchers were that the Sony used its own software to record the output in High Resolution. The Audio Technica uses the supplied Audacity software which has its limitations in that it was developed for verbal podcasts rather than music and, from previous experience, can be clunky to use. Richard was helpful, informative and in no way pushy, the decision was purely mine based on his non-biased information. I left the store with confidence and a boxed Sony PSHX500. The Turntable was well packaged and protected by its box. Minimal work was necessary to assemble it by referring to the very well explained instructions. Assembly took me no more than 10 minutes to accomplish. Setting it up is delicate task but again not over complex and took around 15 minutes including siting it on a suitable location near the computer. One word of the advice I will offer is that when the turntable is sited where it is intended to be used, I recommend ensuring that the surface is indeed level. I did this by using a decent 8” spirit level, laying it firstly front to back across the platter and adjacent the spindle. Use a solid material placed under the feet to correct any out of level. Then rotate the platter 90 degrees with the spirit level still on it and repeat the levelling operation side to side. You may be surprised to see just how far out of level a piece of furniture can be. Doing the above ensures that there will be no skipping during the playing of the record. Once all is set-up and connected to the computer, down load the software needed (either PC or Mac [I use the latter]) from the Sony website. The software has proved to be straight forward to use; however, it should be noted that the USB output creates a digital file only and does not play sound through any sound system. However, it also has phono outputs which can be connected to a stereo system and used in the conventional way. Secondary software to convert the digital file to, for example, MP3, WAV format and the like is needed. (I knew this before purchasing the turntable). I chose to use VinylStudio which is worthy of review in itself but that’s not for here. It has proved to be an excellent companion to this particular Sony turntable. Suffice to say that I continue to be impressed with the turntable. The results have been truly impressive. The first ever recording was Cockney Rebel’s ‘Come Up To See Me (Make Me Smile)’, chosen for its sudden stops of nearly two seconds down from heavy vocals to total silence, and also a guitar with orchestra solo. The output detail has depth, clarity and detail far in excess of my expectations. The second track I tried was Rick Wakeman’s ‘Statue Of Justice’ from his “Criminal Record’ Album. I chose this for its highs and lows but also for its percussive effects from high treble to deep and very loud bass. Additionally, it has a scratch which ticked at every revolution: VinylStudio eliminated them all. The next project is Jeff Wayne’s, ‘…War Of The Worlds’, simply because the second half the digital version has been ‘remixed’ by some obscure ‘DeJay’ into a travesty of its original version. I’m even beginning to look forward to winter when short days and long night will give me a good reason to start the mammoth task of digitising my range of 1960s - 1980s vinyl LPs. It will be a long task as there is no quick way. The Sony PSHX500 has proved to be the ideal turntable to do this. I am 100 per cent delighted with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony Make (You) Believe Normally a USB turntable does just the one task converting your vinyl into a digital format preserving the plastic. Rarely could you use it as an actual turntable allowing you to listen to your vinyl and have it sound great. This deck from Sony not only sounds great through an amp and speakers, the quality of recording on to your PC can be done at Hi Res and also sounds great when played back digitally through said same amp and speakers. A thoroughly great sounding, well built piece of kit worthy of the five stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good record deck Bought it for my wife, she is very pleased with it. It sounds great. It doesn't need a pre-amp. Like most premium decks it does not have an autochanger, it is manual, which means less to go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to set up and delivers good rich sound I chose this because it was recommended by What Hi-Fi and RicherSounds had it in stock at the best price and quick delivery. I have used other USB decks and been disappointed. however with the Sony I have played a good selection from my collection, OMD sounds great and even some of the old 70's vinyl play well. Rich solid sound at all volumes. The recording software was easy to install - although not easy to locate on the Sony Support site. The software is much more basic than Audacity but works well and give a good digital version in wav format. This is again easy to import into iTunes and sounds very good through headphones. All in all good solution for both listening and digitising favourite vinyl without breaking the bank.
