With 7.2 outputs, bi-amp capability and 4K video upscaling, the Onkyo TXNR515 takes home cinema into the big league.

MARVELL QDEO 4K VIDEO SCALING

Going one stage further than conventional 1080p upscaling, the processor has the power to upscale to twice that level! Known as 4K because of the horizontal pixel count of 1080p TV increasing from 1920 to around 4000 (there are several formats all offering slight variations). Currently 4k TVs and monitors are specialist items but, watch this space; prices are coming down all the time. At the moment there are already 4K videos available over the internet but with the TX-NR515 the upscaling ensures, whatever the format, you're all set for the future of 4K. In the meantime you can also upscale signals to 1080p for the best image quality with Full HD TVs and projectors.

7.2 CHANNELS WITH THE OPTION OF BI-AMPING

With seven rather than five channels, the TXNR515 adds front effect speakers for a more enveloping sound. You also get the additional benefit of the more advanced Dolby ProLogic IIz processor, which enhances TV viewing in surround. If you were wondering what the "7.2" channel output means, that's explained by the TXNR515 twin subwoofer outputs. When used in this way you get a better spread of bass and can use two smaller, but "faster" sounding subwoofers for a tighter, better controlled bass. As an alternative to using the seven channel outputs, you can use the standard five but with the front speakers bi-amped. This gives added control and is especially impressive in stereo mode when you'll hear a much broader and better controlled sound.

UNRIVALLED NETWORKING ABILITY

The Onkyo TXNR515 comes with some of the best network connectivity in its class. Connect via Ethernet or use an optional Onkyo dongle to join your wireless network. From here you'll be able to access a massive range of Internet radio stations plus cloud-based music servers such as the hugely popular last.fm and Spotify. In addition to this, DLNA certification ensures it's easy to stream music from your laptop or PC. Added together, this streaming flexibility makes the TXNR515 much more than just an AV receiver, it makes it a complete music server.

CLASS-LEADING CONTROL INTERFACES

Like many of its rivals, the Onkyo TX-NR515 features the option of an app based control. Available free for either Apple or Android devices, the control app lets you use your smartphone as a clear and comprehensive controller. Unlike others, however, the TXNR515 also features InstaPrevue. This innovative new technology uses the HDMI connections to preview other sources via picture-in-picture. Brilliant for seamless source switching, InstaPrevue is a joy to use.

SIMPLY THE BEST CONNECTIVITY IN ITS CLASS

It may be one of Onkyo's mid-range models, but this doesn't stop the TXNR515 from boasting the sort of socketry you'd usually expect from a high-end AV receiver. No fewer than eight HDMI sockets are provided with one being on the front for the connection of occasional devices such as a camcorder or smart phone. Added to this are twin HDMI outputs, making the TXNR515 ideal for using with both a TV and a projector. The TXNR515 features a Zone 2 output - perfect for music via active or passive speakers in another room. There's also a front-mounted USB socket. It might not look much, but this little socket will transform the sound quality from your iPod or iPhone. By connecting to the USB, you'll benefit from a digital connection. This gives a direct signal and, hence, purer sound quality than using a conventional dock or analogue input. If you don't have an iPod or iPhone, the USB socket will also accept music signals from other MP3 players or multi-media devices.

With its huge range of performance enhancing features and typically impressive Onkyo sound quality, the TXNR515 is where home cinema starts to get serious.
