Featuring Arcam’s renowned Class-G tech plus an ESS Sabre DAC, the Arcam SA20 puts all the best ingredients together to cook up a stunning amplifier.

Class-G for the best of all worlds

Arcam’s pioneering Class-G amplifier technology gives the SA20 the best possible sound in all circumstances. The first quarter of its potential power (80 watts) is delivered in pure Class-A. Class-A is renowned for a rich, smooth sound that makes instruments and vocals sound incredibly life-like. Once you go beyond this point, efficient digital amplification kicks in – delivering plenty of power without the huge reserves of power and inefficiency that Pure Class-A all the way would demand. Sweet and refined yet a beast when unleased – the Arcam SA20 gives you the best of all worlds.

Digital inputs with ESS DAC for superior sound quality
While Class-G tech handles the amplifier side of business, a superior quality ESS Sabre 9038 DAC (Digital to Analogue) makes the most of your digital sources. By going direct and using the Arcam’s built-in DAC you get superb clarity and a much more ‘open’ sound with strong dynamics. Two coaxial digital inputs and one optical let you connect up to three sources – perfect for a CD/DVD/Blu-ray player, streamer and even your TV!

Spin vinyl
Great with digital, the Arcam SA20 also makes the most of vinyl. The dedicated phono input (Moving Magnet) built into the SA20 is a high quality device, designed to get the best from your vinyl. Unlike many integral phono stages that are simply there to make up the spec, the Arcam’s has been carefully developed to provide low noise and high levels of detail within the music. If you don’t plan to use a record deck, simply switch the input to line level and you can use it for another source.

Room for all your music components
As well as the three digital inputs and phono stage, the SA20 is also equipped with three analogue RCA inputs and a front-mounted 3.5mm AUX input. The socket at the front is perfect for portables or even your smartphone, with the rear inputs ideal for permanent sources such as a CD player and tuner. If you’re a headphones fan, the high quality, built-in headphone amp is punchy enough to get the best out of a wide range of designs.

Control options
As standard, the Arcam SA20 is supplied with a backlit, learning remote control. This makes it easier to use in low light levels and it will control other handy functions – such as your amp’s volume control. If you’d rather operate the amp via your iPhone or iPad, simply connect to your network and download Arcam’s Musiclife app for seamless control. For effortless operation as part of a home automation system, the SA20 also features Net, RS232 and USB (for charging only) interfaces.

Powerful when it needs to be but subtle when it doesn’t, the Arcam SA20 is a great musical all-rounder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant product and great service as always I went to Richer Sounds during the Christmas holidays to look at 2ch amps as my AV amp was not delivering the sound I wanted for music. After doing a bit of research and writing down a number of questions I went into RS to discuss my options. The sales advisor (Anis) spent a good hour with me answering questions and doing some comparisons. The Arcam stood out by miles. I had a couple of queries over the next few days which Anis helpfully answered to. I have been buying my audio gear from RS for nearly 20 years now and I have never had a bad experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Before you buy the rest, buy the best! Well, my old Amp died after 15 years of excellent service. It was am MF A5 (250 watts per channel) and was at the time highly rated. I liked my old amp but never really loved it. Maybe it was the room, the speakers or a combination of them both but I never truly heard a sound that justified the price tag. A great amp in the correct setting but I never had that. A medium-sized, well-carpeted room is where I am coming from, Bronze 6 floor standards and a Dual CS500 turntable. And that's that. I didn't want to make the same mistake twice, really was not going to buy something overly expensive but at the same time wanted an amp that was well thought off with a tradition that suggested it was here to stay. So I turned to Richer Sounds to help me solve both the budget and the sound problems and I am glad I did. The Arcam SA20 is a sleek looking 80-watt amp that hosts a good number of features. It is lightweight and easy to move around, but not in a way that made you feel you have a flimsy product, more in a way that makes you think that the designers have tried hard to create an item that boasts quality but at the same time favors delicacy. The Amp comes loaded with the usual CD ports and also a separate dedicated phono stage. It is also capable of some theatre use and can accommodate a separate sub woofer. A number of digital options are available including various filters etc. The remote is fairly large and illuminates when used. The bottom section of the handset is for AMP functions and the top for controlling the Arcam CD player that matched the range. I am impressed but what about the all-important sound? I knew from the moment I heard the amp that it was correct for me, a rich and well-balanced sound that has enough separation between top, mid, bass to keep the music interesting. The bass is a strong point, it is very centered and obviously powerful, nothing lacks. The top is not harsh and the mids are warm. I have tried all sorts of music with the amp from ACDC to Motorhead, from Herbie Hancock to Ella Fitzgerald and I can confirm that the amp really does handle the material well, and this is where the bass works its magic. So, if you are listening to Motorhead or Duke Ellington you have an experience that leaves you feeling that you are hearing the music from the bottom upwards. So nothing seems to lack. The amp is capable of playing loud but it is detailed at even modest volumes The Phono Stage is very rich and clear. In all, I am delighted and feel that Arcam is offering something here that is equal to some amps are more expensive but require a perfect setting. If you, like me, are after a great amp at a good price then look no further. It Rocks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suits my monitor audio speakers perfectly I tried a couple of amps prior to this one but they sounded a bit bright with my Monitor Audio RS6 speakers, but the Arcam SA30 suits them perfectly, also I needed an amp which could run my stereo speakers as part of a home cinema system which this can be set up to do. Perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great amp The amp is really good and a great addition to my home hifi! Simple to set up and use. Really like the phono stage that’s built into the amp for spinning the vinyls and the Digital inputs. A warm sound and not too bright a very well balanced system!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this amp. We compared this to a Cambridge Audio amp, admittedly not as expensive as this but we are pleased we paid the extra for this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An obvious lesson learned Bought to replace my old Arcam A85, which finally gave up after 20 years. Partnering my Marantz CD-63II-KI and Denon TU-260LII, with Dynaudio speakers - all equally venerable. I bought the SA20 out of brand loyalty, believing Arcam deliver a mellower sound (than Marantz, say), less InYerFace. But that was then! I'd say the SA20 supplies a superbly defined sound, with a mid-range that imposes itself unignorably. It's all too much for my old kit, I fear. I now need to update everything - to rebuild gradually! Not sure what to replace first ... Oh well.
