”Sets a new baseline for integrated amps at this price”. ’What Hi-Fi?’ 2020 Product of the Year.

The amp that does it all

Engineered to the highest standards, the CXA81 delivers class-leading sound quality. The 80 watt amp is powerful enough for the largest rooms and the most power-hungry speakers. A built-in ESS DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) means you get the best from your digital, as well as analogue sources. Thanks to standard Bluetooth, you can now stream music in top quality aptX HD. All this, plus the Lunar Grey CXA81 looks more stylish than ever.

Powerful sound from the toroidal transformer
Powerful sound begins with the power supply, which is why Cambridge Audio use an audiophile quality, toroidal transformer. Renowned for their low noise, high efficiency and superior sound quality, the over-sized transformer gives the CXA81 a powerful, dynamic sound and a hefty 80W per channel power output - enough for ‘party level’ sound in even the largest domestic spaces.

Digital inputs with top spec DAC for detail
Featuring a reference standard ESS Sabre ES9016K2M DAC, the CXA81 works wonders with your digital audio and video sources. With two optical digital inputs and one coaxial, you can connect up to three digital sources, such as a games console, TV and a CD transport – the Cambridge Audio CXC makes the perfect match.

Bluetooth as standard
Now a standard fitment, Bluetooth offers simple, wireless music streaming from your mobile, tablet or laptop. Stream stored music or popular music streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. The Bluetooth receiver is compatible with aptX HD, giving the highest quality sound possible from Bluetooth, right up to 24bit/48kHz. You also get the benefit of the sound passing through the ESS Sabre DAC, meaning precise, detailed sound from all your streamed music.

The best from USB audio, with Hi-Res sound
If you enjoy Hi-Res sound, you’ll love the CXA81. Using an asynchronous USB socket at the rear, you can connect up to your laptop, PC or server and stream Hi-Res music, right up to studio-quality 32bit/384kHz and DSD256. As well as improving the sound over your computer’s soundcard, the asynchronous ‘direct control’ link also greatly reduces jitter, for lower distortion and more precise audio.

Professional connection
More usually found on 'reference' hi-fi and professional equipment, the CXA81 boasts balanced XLR inputs. When connected to a suitable source, this gives a fully balanced, hot/cold, connection for the ultimate analogue signal quality.

All for analogue
The Cambridge CXA81 has four line level inputs - enough for all your analogue sources. A pre-amp output is also fitted – ideal for power amp upgrades. Other handy connections include an RCA subwoofer output, headphone socket and connections for two pairs of speakers.

Connected for installs
A wide range of control sockets make the CXA81 ideal as part of a more complex home installation. RS-232C, IR input, trigger in/out sockets and Control Bus RCA phonos mean the CXA81 is more than happy to work with a wide range home automation control systems.

Vibration resistant casing
With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the player from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise. Isolating feet help adsorb vibration for a further reduction in distortion.

Sleek new finish
The CXA81 is part of the refreshed CX-Series 2. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXA81 a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the CXC CD transport, CXN V2 network player. The Lunar Grey front panel contrasts with the black top and sides and blends well with both black and silver separates.

Complete versatility meets the finest sound, with the Cambridge Audio CXA81.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cambridge CXA81 Hi as a treat I brought the set, Streamer, CD player and Amp. Sound is impressive but had a few problems, hooking up to my Samsung QE49Q80T there are big problems with sound, not all CXA81 fault, Samsung not investing in a good optical board hasn't helped. This is my second amp in 6 months the first started to cut out with a speaker fault that didn't exist. Richer Sounds looked after me and all is good. Lovely sound and a joy to listen to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Amp I can’t stop smiling I bought this amp a week or so ago and cannot recommend it enough. The Clarity soundstage and depth are a giant stride better than my old amp.Everything is so tight and crisp, digital or vinyl it’s like I’m listening to my music collection for the first time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Sound Did not realise that my ageing CD collection could sound this good. Seems the perfect match alongside CX CD Transporter and a pair of Oberon 5 speakers,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great quality sound! I bought this amplifier to replace a Marantz PM6006 and there is definitely a step-up in sound quality, particularly in the soundstage, which is quite frankly awesome! The amp's DAC is also a great improvement on that of my last amp. I now always use the digital inputs to connect my CD player and network streamer (having previously used the source DACs and connected to my last amp via its analogue inputs). The reason I have only given the CXA81 four stars however is because of its absence of tone controls. I didn't think I'd miss them much but I'm finding that I do, especially on less-than-perfect recordings, where wee boosts of bass/treble would have come in handy. For listening to good quality recordings however, the Cambridge Audio CXA81 is amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from purchase of cxa81 I bought this product approximately 5 months ago now - based on reviews but purchased with the option to listen and return if needed. This was an upgrade to my SONY 1040 AV receiver. I already had Kef LS50's. As someone else noted - it does take sometime to run in, and the sound profile has improved noticeably since purchase...not sure why that is but that's my experience - same when i purchased the KEF's. Comparing to the SONY (AVR versus dedicated stereo amp) - it definitely has a more sweeter, subtle sound. Biggest difference was the less brute force of the sound from the AVR, to a much more musical sound where the pace and subtlety of a track was much more apparent. Having heard these words in other reviews i now know what they mean when you go from an AVR to a stereo amp. V happy with purchase and lots of analogue and digital connections to...would love to have HDMI on future versions though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb sound, great range of connections. Have been listening for hours, since setting up (which was straightforward) my vinyl collection along with CDs sounds fantastic. I thought my old amp was good but this one blows it out of the water! I have also discovered streaming and DAB Radio via bluetooth. A truly wonderful piece of kit, sorted quickly and easily by the guys at Richer Sounds Leicester. Anyone want to buy a TV!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality and fearures Really good streamer, nice looking and huge number of inputs and outputs. Phone app could do with a bit more polish and UX design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic amp/dac Bought this about a month ago now, and very happy so far. Didn't have the space at home to do a completely separate system, so went for this combined amp/dac with the cd transport. It lives up to the 5star reviews it has been getting in the press. Got a lot of help matching speakers to the system in store. Paired with BW603 floorstanders, you'll get a pleasantly warm sound that is guaranteed to get your foot tapping.
