"Extraordinary array of features; refined and revealing sound that puts musicians in the room... Smooth, svelte sounding amp with power."Hi-Fi Choice magazine.

Class XD amplifier design

What makes this amplifier very special is the Class XD amplification. This combines the best qualities of Class A amplification - smoothness and realism - with the best from Class B - power and control, without the disadvantages inherent with many Class AB designs. What you'll hear is a smooth, yet detailed sound quality with the ability to drive almost any speaker and a substantial power output.

Massive toroidal power supply
At its heart, the 851A is powered by a massive toroidal power supply, which accounts for a third of its the weight. Not surprisingly the 851A has a monster power output: 2 x 120W into an 8 ohms and an awesome 2 x 200 watts into a 4 ohms. What this means in terms of sound quality is deep, effortless bass. Furthermore, such is the control and current that the 851A handles tricky dynamic sections, such as the sweep of a full orchestra with consummate ease.

Power with control
The 851A can do subtle, too. By using a separate toroidal power supply for the pre-amp section, the 851A ensures that pre-amplified signals arrive at the power amp stage in the best condition possible and so are brimming with subtle detail. Short of having a separate pre/power amp combo, this separate power supply is the next best thing.

Dual mono configuration
With separate taps for the left and right channel from the power supply, and separate left and right amplifier circuits, the 851A is a true dual mono amplifier. By having separate circuits for the left and right channels, each channel has its own, distortion-free feed. This brings about greater separation between instruments, greater width of sound and enhanced realism.

Plenty of connections
With no fewer than eight audio inputs, the 851A is capable enough to handle even the most complex of systems. XLR balanced connections offer a professional-grade connection with compatible equipment, such as the 851C CD player and Stream Magic 6 network player. Fixed level inputs make it easy to use the Azur 851A as the front amplification as part of a home cinema system, while the large display can be programmed to name your sources, so that, for example, the PlayStation 3 input is labeled, 'PS3' rather than 'Aux 3'.

Full metal casing
Using a full metal casing with rounded edges, doesn't just look and feel good, it helps the sound, too. The case is rigid and well damped, so it won't resonance unhelpfully. The thick aluminium front panel looks the part and also acts as a shield against electrical interference from sources such as dimmers and RF devices. All these details combine to create an amplifier that not only looks stylish but also offers exceptional resistance to both mechanical and electrical interference.

To experience music more vividly than ever before, the Cambridge Audio Azur 851A provides your front row seat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant All Round Performer I purchased this amp a couple of weeks ago and I am totally over the moon with it. The sound quality is too die for especially when I am pairing it with the Cambridge 851N Network Player. I would not hesitate to recommend this amp to anyone looking for superior sound and build quality, and the other bonus is just how professional the Richer Sounds (Bromley) were when I was trying to decide, thanks very much guys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality sound and build Wanted to upgrade my 650 azur, so I went for the 851A, and glad I did, this is an excellent amp both in terms of sound & build quality ( weigh 's a mighty 15 kg so be careful when moving it!.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cambridge audio Bought this a month ago the quality of sound blew us away , tyou can see and feel the quality of the unit as well even down to the remote, this is without doubt the best thing we have bought from richer sounds

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Early days I bought this to match the 851N media player with which I am so pleased. The 851A is equally well built and they look great together. Too early to offer useful feedback on sound quality but no regrets so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from stylish looks, great sound, great connectivity My first one was faulty, trip back to store, new one ordered delivered in two days. Great service as always from Richer sounds. I play a lot of old vinyl so the tone controls were a selling point, although they make make very subtle changes. can bypass them so you get clear unadulterated sound. It's very happy driving my focal arias.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning, warm but alive! I have had this a month or so, it conintues to impress as do the other CA items bought to go with it (qualified, guided and selected with the great crew in Richer's Reading store, who "proved it" all the way). No digital inputs - but that's OK because I have the 851n DAC / NW drive as the "head". It really is blisteringly good partnered with the 851n, overall it's more money than I intended - but wow! No phone stage, so you need this, but again, partnered with the CA Phone stage even my very old record player has just come back to life. If Cambridge are reading this - please make the screen bigger, and instructions better

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality in every respect. After my Onkyo Amp and Speakers blew i needed an Amp quickly as I love my music. As a I wanted quality without the hefty price I searched the second hand market. I secured some Tannoy 611's, which are amazing, now I need an Amp. Second hand Arcam and Audiolab Amp's price's were sky high without knowing if they would last the test of time. So decided to buy new. RS kindly showed me the CXA range. Nice sound but lacked the power I love. They then set up the Azur 851a and I knew in seconds it was the one for me. An effortless Amp with beautifully balanced sound. Every instrument sounds exactly as it should. Tried every genre of music through it and it didn't disappoint. I added a CXC transport, DAC, XLR's and XT40 Speaker cable. So much for trying to save some money. The Amp is quality in every respect. Amazing build, sound and connection choice. It's hard to imagine music can sound any better than this. Makes you play songs you wouldn't normally like just to hear them from a different perspective...Quality!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Superb integrated amp I'm happy with the purchase. The sound is impressive and my Focal aria 936's are an excellent match for the amp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning performance I am not a hi fi buff and so cannot use the jargon (e.g. "a cheeky little amplifier, with just a hint of fruitiness in the mid-range") but I can say how I find its performance in my own living room. I had grown accustomed to my trustee old Technics and rather liked its warm and cosy sound. The 851A is in quite a different league. Coupled with the 851C it makes my entire collection sound as if each recording was a fresh performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great variety of features. Good sounds I recently purchased this model at the Hull shop. The service was excellent as was the delivery service. The model has plenty of outputs to satisfy most needs. The sound stage is wide and there is good separation between the speakers. Paired with a good power amp the results are sensational. Really pleased with the results of my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effortless Detail Previous reviews mention "detail" and I think that is my principle observation. I had a much earlier eight series amplifier years ago, before being side-tracked by surround sound and cinema amplifiers. Time (and space) have allowed for my return to a dedicated two channel music system at last. My 851A is replacing a smaller 30w amplifier which though good, ran out of steam at highish levels the sound becoming a mush. This is not insane levels but just higher than easy listening. My interest is classical and jazz, the 851A projecting a rock solid sound stage, with incredible detail, a lightly brushed cymbal or xylophone in the midst of a full orchestra clear and audible but very subtle. Massed violins on some Decca DDD recordings which can be a steely cacophony are tamed and clear. It takes a while to go through recordings and new kit sometimes causes reappraisal of old favourites, but while the Cambridge is laying bare badly recorded horrors, good stuff, (3 new recently released Copland discs on Chandos) sound superb. My system for reference is Cambridge 851A, N and C and Monitor Audio Silver 500 speakers. This is not really an absurdly expensive amplifier - you can pay a lot more - but it does perform beautifully. Telesales must get a mention, (thank you John) and delivery by BJS was very quick and efficient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power to spare Bought this to go with the Cambridge Audio network streamer, and it pairs extremely well. Easy to use, and looks good too, uncluttered, and clear. Powers my floor standing speakers at all volumes, with ease.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite a beast of an Amp. Sound very smooth & controlled. Excellent connectivity, but only has one tape loop, which just goes to prove you can't have everything. Such a solid piece of kit, I now have to go back a re-listen to my collection to hear all the things I have been missing. A nice problem to have. Oh yes, excellent service from Norwich Showroom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from cambridge audio 851A Bought this amp a couple of weeks back , best purchase I have ever made , the team at richer sounds are so helpful , and the added 6 yr warranty is great for piece of mind , not that you need it due to the excellent build quality of cambridge audio amps

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I wanted I went to Richer Sounds expecting to buy another amp.however after listening to my first choice it was too smooth with not enough detail. The next one I heard was very detailed but too bright. ThenI heard the Cambridge and fell in love it was both smooth and detailed. I have had the amp. for a couple of weeks now and it just gets better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Brilliant but unreliable Bought with an 851N (see my review because it’s not very reliable either). Also run my turntable through it into MA Gold 300 speakers. Setup sounds very good to me, generally very pleased. However, volume control has lost its mind. Turning it changes the volume in a completely random way so trying to turn it down a notch can result in the volume leaping to huge volumes. Only saving grace is it works fine with the remote.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effortless Bass, Sonic Separation, Audiophile Heaven! So you’re reading this review for one reason, and one reason alone. Q: Should I part with £1200, is the 851A really worth it? The short answer is most definitely yes!! I partnered the 851A with the 851N, and boy was I blown away. As soon as you turn the dial you know you have purchased something quite special. The soundstage is incredible. The bass is effortless, clear, defined, and dynamic. The midrange is wonderfully separated, not muddled or overcrowded by the bass, allowing vocals to emanate and breathe. And most surprisingly, the Cambridge equipment still had room in the locker for the sonic separation of the high end frequencies. Playing Christine & The Queens Chaleur Humaine by the 851N is quite simply incredible. The reproduction of ‘No Harm is Done’, from the thumping bass to the sweet vocals, tailored with the high frequencies bouncing around the room makes me smile constantly, and all my friends too! Treat yourself, buy the 851A, you will not regret it!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cambridge Audio Azur 851A Purchased this amp from your Glasgow shop within the last 10 days. Alan from the store set up the Amp and all the other separates like CD Player,Turntable etc on Thursday 22nd December. Working fine on Thursday andFriday then on Christmas Eve no sound at all from any source that is connected to the amplifier coming from the speakers. I have checked all connections and nothing has been changed since the original set up. At the moment I have the amp powering up but no sound to the speakers. I am sure this amp is a quality listen therefore at the time of writing this I cannot give a review. I now have to go back to store and tell them of my problem. I am sure they will solve this as I have purchased many products over the years as I am familiar with the store since it opened. Thank You William Square

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Find your feature No problems with the output quality, obviously very good. Much vaunted features are a tad more difficult to appreciate, unless you either have a Richer Sounds expert on hand all day, or can spend many hours experimenting/rambling in menus. May be a nerd thing, but as I have a life and do stuff and meet people, I maybe don't have the dedication to digital technology. Still, very good reproduction, for broadcast and disc sources. Lots of detail and separation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fine amplifier Following an inheritance I had decided to spruce up my hifi. First to go was the amp, to be replaced by The Cambridge Audio Azur 851A. With its array of analogue inputs both balanced and unbalanced and record output this suited my purpose and the difference in sound quality was immedietly noticed. Much more punchy and detailed than my old Rega. Next to go were the speakers to be replaced by some Kef LS50s from another retailer. Lastly my old Denon CD player was starting to fail to play some CDs so I guess the laser is on its was out. I borrowed the demo Cambridge Audio Azur 851C from Richer Sounds Romford. Not only a CD player but also D/A converter with an array of digital inputs, not cheap at 1200 quid. It did sound good through the amp and speakers but so did my old Denon. In fact I could detect no difference between each machine. I was grateful that Richer Sounds Romford refunded me the cost of the 851C.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent build quality coupled with sound quality that more than justifies the purchase price Slowly getting round to updating my old system & wanted a good amp. Read the reviews on this unit & arranged a demo at the Norwich branch (top guys there). It was delivered early the following week. Really impressed by the build quality & the reassuring weight! Set it all up & had a listen. I have a 'budget' azur 640c c/d player & old Tannoy DC 2000 speakers #remember them?#. It still sounded far better than I expected, superb stereo separation, much more detailed sound & a generally warmer more involving sound too. How much better will it sound when I change the c/d player & speakers? This has really reignited my interest in hi-fi again. Very pleased!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from excellent sound at a price Beautiful clear sound. Unit very heavy and gets vet hot Thought might be louder, although high volume is loud enough Expensive. Note: one of the feeds stopped working without explanation. Richer Sounds changed the whole unit without a fuss. Without an Amp for only 3 days. Not what I would expect with such a pricey piece of kit but good customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This amp produces a great sound I bought the amp to power my digital library from my PC on my desk. I paired it up with Focal bookshelf speakers and cambridge audio mini speakers behind me. The combo produces excellent quality audio at all volumes and does not lose quality at lower volumes. The bass element is all you could ask for. For what I need it is probably over the top, but you only live once, so you may as well enjoy great reproduction of your favourite sounds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean unforced sound capable of incredable resolution without ever sounding harsh Purchased this amp on the merit of owning it's predecessor (840a) for 7yrs,which now resides in a bedroom system. The highly respected and straight talking musician and hifi reviewer Richard Black (hifi choice) helped draw my attention to Cambridge audio's class XD amplifiers. Class 'A' purity and transistor power (Hifi holy grail). The new 851a is a terrific amp thats capable of intimacy and wallop in equal measure, when partnered correctly. If you like an artificial, compressed, grainy, thin, bright sound with overblown bass, then you need NOT apply. This amplifier deserves a long long audition to be fully appreciated.
