"Extraordinary array of features; refined and revealing sound that puts musicians in the room... Smooth, svelte sounding amp with power."Hi-Fi Choice magazine.

Class XD amplifier design

What makes this amplifier very special is the Class XD amplification. This combines the best qualities of Class A amplification - smoothness and realism - with the best from Class B - power and control, without the disadvantages inherent with many Class AB designs. What you'll hear is a smooth, yet detailed sound quality with the ability to drive almost any speaker and a substantial power output.

Massive toroidal power supply
At its heart, the 851A is powered by a massive toroidal power supply, which accounts for a third of its the weight. Not surprisingly the 851A has a monster power output: 2 x 120W into an 8 ohms and an awesome 2 x 200 watts into a 4 ohms. What this means in terms of sound quality is deep, effortless bass. Furthermore, such is the control and current that the 851A handles tricky dynamic sections, such as the sweep of a full orchestra with consummate ease.

Power with control
The 851A can do subtle, too. By using a separate toroidal power supply for the pre-amp section, the 851A ensures that pre-amplified signals arrive at the power amp stage in the best condition possible and so are brimming with subtle detail. Short of having a separate pre/power amp combo, this separate power supply is the next best thing.

Dual mono configuration
With separate taps for the left and right channel from the power supply, and separate left and right amplifier circuits, the 851A is a true dual mono amplifier. By having separate circuits for the left and right channels, each channel has its own, distortion-free feed. This brings about greater separation between instruments, greater width of sound and enhanced realism.

Plenty of connections
With no fewer than eight audio inputs, the 851A is capable enough to handle even the most complex of systems. XLR balanced connections offer a professional-grade connection with compatible equipment, such as the 851C CD player and Stream Magic 6 network player. Fixed level inputs make it easy to use the Azur 851A as the front amplification as part of a home cinema system, while the large display can be programmed to name your sources, so that, for example, the PlayStation 3 input is labeled, 'PS3' rather than 'Aux 3'.

Full metal casing
Using a full metal casing with rounded edges, doesn't just look and feel good, it helps the sound, too. The case is rigid and well damped, so it won't resonance unhelpfully. The thick aluminium front panel looks the part and also acts as a shield against electrical interference from sources such as dimmers and RF devices. All these details combine to create an amplifier that not only looks stylish but also offers exceptional resistance to both mechanical and electrical interference.

To experience music more vividly than ever before, the Cambridge Audio Azur 851A provides your front row seat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound quality and easy to setup I bought this as a replacement for an older Azur model and so was already expecting it to be good quality but the ease of setup and functionality of this model was pleasing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding amp My Sony based system was nearly 20 years old and having added an Azur network player a couple of years ago, decided it was time to upgrade other parts of my system. I considered alternative amps but the "lockdown" rules made it difficult for me to audition properly. The extended returns policy offered by richersounds persuaded me to take the plunge and I am so glad I did. My initial thoughts were it sounded "bright", but rather than altering any settings I decided to run the amp in for a couple of weeks and tweek from there. Having now lived with this amp for well over a month I have to say it is truly amazing. The sound is well focused and extremely well balanced and the brightness I originally heard is no longer there. It's a bit of a cliche, but I really am hearing things in recordings I never appreciated on my previous kit. The service from Richer Sounds was exceptional as ever and a special thank you to Paul in the Middlesbrough store who was superb on the phone and helped a great deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brings music alive So I bought the Azur 851-N and 851-A from the belfast store. This was to replace a yamaha rn602, that i bought to see if streaming is for me (it is!!)The build quality of both units is fantastic. The whole thing is made from aluminium plates (top and sides too), and really feels like an expensive piece of kit. The 851N was extremely easy to set up, and I had it streaming from a NAS in minutes. Normally my streaming service of choice is Tidal, and it works really well in the new Stream magic App. (if you are using the cambridge connect app.. stop.. and upgrade to stream magic). The screen looks fantastic! The 851A is all analog, with no DACs and just analog inputs. You can change the name of the inputs on the display which is a nice touch. Some questions I had when purchasing was did i need two remotes? The answer is no, the 851N remote will change the source and the volumne on the 851A (and turn it on and off). The stream magic app will also change the volume on the the 851A if you have the remote interconnect between the two (a cable for this comes with it). I have this set up using a rega p3, CA MM phono preamp, Monitor Audio Bronze 6 speakers and AudioQuest interconnects. How do they sound.... well. Can i use bold words on this review? Its F****** amazing! I went through a list of music on the CA website, and all the things it said to watch for were there. Daft Punk – Get Lucky, sounded like an extremely well recorded piece, English Chamber Orchestra - Dido & Aeneas, Act 3: But Death, Alas, the spatial seperation was there, Lou Reed – Walk on the Wild Side made me tap my foot, Beck – Morning the bass was amazing, so clear not over the top.. silky would be the word. Ive been hearing things in music ive listened to for years that ive never heard before. I spent sunday listening to every Pink Floyd album on vinyl, and just couldnt stop! I know these records intimately, and it really felt like i was listening to them for the first time. (PS the vinyl set up is great, its dead quite, no hums and no messing around with grounding to improve things) Even my wife came in the other day and said "wow... what did you do? That sounds amazing!" And sat down for two hours and listened to streamed music with me. One thing Im loving, at a lower volume, it STILL sounds fantastic. You dont need to turn it up to get yourself to feel the music, the feeling is always there. It brings the music alive, the way it was ment to be heard. The big question is, is this worth the money? YES... YES IT IS!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has it's issues Having owned this unit for 6 years, these are my comments: - the bass/treble control stopped working after a year for no reason. - the volume control is rubbish; this issue is widely commented on in various forums. The volume control is completely redundant and only works via remote. - the Cambridge badge on the front easily comes off, it's like it has been put on with pencil lead. I wrote to tell Cambridge about this, put a decent quality badge on it for this price. For these reasons i wouldn't buy another Cambridge amp for the price they charge. The case gets unbelievably hot when on for a while. So hot you can hardly touch it. I queried this with Cambridge and they said that's what's supposed to happen!. Great sounding amp though, no problems with the sound, just unsaleable if i ever decide to upgrade due to the above problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great build, great sound and features Bought the Azur 851A amp recently to go with my Focal Aria speakers and my Azur 851N streamer. The streamer sounds amazing but coupled with the amp and the Focals it is outrageous. The amp has power and drive and punch but also can deliver smooth relaxed music when required. It can do it all. The main thing i notice is the detail and the sweet treble without any hint of harshness despite my speakers having metal tweeters. Songs i have known for 30 years sound like i am listening to them for the first time as i can hear things i have never heard before. I demoed a Naim Nait XS2 recently and the Azur 851A is superior in my opinion. The Naim, while excellent, does not have the insight or detail of the Azur and the Azur matches it for drive and punch. Very pleased with this amp and it will be at the heart of my system for the next ten years.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fantastic quality and sound but The Cambridge Audio Azur 851A is a very talented amplifier, the build quality is excellent, but the sound quality is what makes it stand out, it is very musical and a pleasure to listen to, it doesn't pull you in, you get into the music of your own accord, it's such a wonderful place to be, I found that it handles vinyl slightly better than CD (but you have to compare them side by side to notice this), perhaps I need a better CD transport, the Cambridge Audio Azur 851C is very tempting. However there is the small matter of the but in the title and only 3 stars, I have speakers that are rated at 100 Watts each and very easy to drive, the 851A has 120 Watts per channel so enough power, but I have to turn the volume to 80% before the amp starts to give anything meaningful back, I didn't want to push it further as I don't want to ruin my speakers, but the 851A just runs out of meaningful power, it really needs to be partnered with a power amp to get out of it what is in there, the detail and music are fantastic but the lacklustre punch is killing what is something very special
