”A premium music streamer with the performance to match.”– ‘What Hi-Fi’ 2018 Product of the Year award winner.

Putting sound quality first

As Cambridge's range-topping network music payer you'd expect the Azur 851N to be pretty special under the lid, and that's exactly what it is! The highest quality sound comes from the use of audiophile quality components and tireless research and testing. As an 8-series design, the 851N uses a substantial toroidal power transformer at its centre. This enables clean, effortless power to be supplied to the other components, allowing them to give their best. High quality Analogue Devices AD1955 DACs (Digital to Analogue Convertors) are configured in dual-mono mode, ensuring maximum channel separation and precise sound-staging.

Fully equipped for High Resolution Audio
At the heart of the 851N is a brand new Zander processor that facilitates 24-bit/192kHz file high resolution streaming from most methods - even Wi-Fi. On top of this, the 851N is compatible with a huge range of high resolution files, including ALAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, WMA, MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+ and OGG Vorbis. The USB audio input also enables streaming of up to 24-bit/192kHz audio and even supports DSD streams from your computer. Originally designed for SACD players, DSD (Direct Stream Digital) encoded music files offer the same detailed, transparent sound as other high resolution file formats, giving you even greater choice of listening.

AFT2 Up-Sampling for the ultimate detail and least jitter
The Cambridge 851N improves sound quality still further with an Anagram Technologies AFT2 24 bit/384 kHz up-sampling circuit. ATF (Adaptive Time Filtering) up-sampling 'stretches' the music to give the highest resolution possible. Up-sampling sound gives a smoother, more relaxed sound quality with added detail. You'll also notice enhanced depth of sound and a more natural quality without the "edge" that can afflict digital music. You'll hear every detail, including every deep breath, squeaky chair and flutter of sheet music; in short, it's like being there for real! AFT2 even aids native 24-bit/192kHz recordings with a faster sampling rate for even less jitter.

Connect to Internet radio and Spotify Connect
In addition to supporting over 20,000, easy to access Internet radio stations, the Azur 851N is also compatible with the most popular music streaming services. Spotify is the world's most popular streaming service and the Azur 851N has Spotify Connect integrated into it (Spotify Premium account required). If you subscribe to Spotify Premium, you can control the Cambridge with the powerful Spotify Connect app on your phone or tablet. Should you prefer other music services, the 851N also supports Napster, BBC iPlayer for radio, Aupeo! Pandora and Rhapsody.

AirPlay and optional Bluetooth
In addition to comprehensive streaming capabilities over LAN, Wi-Fi and USB, the 851N is also compatible with Apple's AirPlay streaming. Use it with your iPhone, iPad PC or Mac and wireless stream your iTunes library or other compatible music services. Connect up the optional BT100 dongle and you'll be able to stream your music from any smartphone, tablet or other device with Bluetooth built-in.

Built-in digital pre-amp - just add active speakers!
If you're seeking quality hi-fi from a minimal system then the built-in digital pre-amp will appeal. Simply add active speakers via the digital or analogue outputs and you'll be able to control the volume and balance via the Azur 851N.

Fully connected, including XLR balanced sockets and 5 USBs
When it comes to connectivity the 851N lives up to its 8-series 'reference' billing. The highlight is the fitment of XLR balanced sockets. When used with a compatible amplifier, such as the matching Cambridge Audio 851A, these connections give the ultimate link possible, with greatly improved resistance to interference. There are also AES/EBU balanced digital input/output sockets for the ultimate digital connections. Added to this there are no fewer than five USB interfaces! The front-mounted socket is ideal for connecting temporary devices such as USB media sticks. At the back, three interfaces take care of more permanently connected media devices plus the optional Bluetooth dongle port. A Type B asynchronous USB input is provided for the direct connection of your PC or Mac. This makes the ideal connection for hooking up your computer as it will effectively 'control' the PC's output for the best sound quality possible. This greatly reduces jitter and gives the highest quality sound possible from your computer audio. Finally, both optical and coaxial digital sockets are provided for both inputs (x2) and outputs. This lets you connect up other digital components and take advantage of the quality DAC built into the 851N.

Intuitive app interface and colour display
With a free Apple/Android app you have effortless control over the radio stations with the comfort of your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad or Android device. The app also seamlessly manages all your streaming content and is, in effect, a very user friendly way of bringing together and controlling all your digital sources. Boasting a new colour screen, it's now possible to display album art on the player. This makes it a pleasure to browse for albums and artists by whichever control system you use.

Full metal casing with extensive damping
Using a full metal casing, with rounded edges, doesn't just look and feel good, it helps the sound, too. The case is rigid and well damped, meaning that it won't resonate unhelpfully. The thick aluminium front panel looks the part and also acts as a shield against electrical interference from sources such as dimmers and RF devices. All these details combine to create a network player that not only looks stylish but also offers exceptional resistance to both mechanical and electrical interference.

A first-rate performer in every respect, the flagship Cambridge Azur 851N network player is the audiophile's choice of streamer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Build and Sound Quality I already have a CXN-V2 which is very good, but the 851n is a real step up in terms of the build and sound quality. The only downside I can see is that, unlike the CXN, it does not have Chromecast built in. However, this does not affect me as I use Qobuz Hi Res, which is built into the media platform of the 851n.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Frustrated. I have posted a review previously, having bought my 851n about 2 and a half years ago. I praised the 851n for it's sound quality and also mentioned what appeared to be bulletproof build quality. However, that build quality I now have reason to question. After 2 and a bit years of flawless performance my 851n has developed a horrible hiss in both channels on start up. The only way to make it stop is to unplug it and that sometimes takes a couple of attempts and a factory reset has had no effect. Today I realised that the right channel is quieter than the left and is missing most of the bottom end and now I know it's happening I can't un-hear it. I don't want to be too hard on CA because when it behaves as it should it sounds absolutley amazing. But the fact is I paid some serious money for the 851n and expect better and having read some of the other reviews here it seems like I'm not the only one with this problem. Doubly frustrating as the 2 year CA warranty ran out before it started playing up and the VIP 6 year guarentee doesn't seem to apply to Hi-Fi. Would I Recommend? When working, definitely. When it's like mine is at the moment,it's difficult to say yes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brings music alive So I bought the Azur 851-N and 851-A from the Belfast store. This was to replace a yamaha rn602, that i bought to see if streaming is for me (it is!!) The build quality of both units is fantastic. The whole thing is made from aluminium plates (top and sides too), and really feels like an expensive piece of kit. The 851N was extremely easy to set up, and I had it streaming from a NAS in minutes. Normally my streaming service of choice is Tidal, and it works really well in the new Stream magic App. (if you are using the cambridge connect app.. stop.. and upgrade to stream magic). The screen looks fantastic! The 851A is all analog, with no DACs and just analog inputs. You can change the name of the inputs on the display which is a nice touch. Some questions I had when purchasing was did i need two remotes? The answer is no, the 851N remote will change the source and the volumne on the 851A (and turn it on and off). The stream magic app will also change the volume on the the 851A if you have the remote interconnect between the two (a cable for this comes with it). I have this set up using a rega p3, CA MM phono preamp, Monitor Audio Bronze 6 speakers and AudioQuest interconnects. How do they sound.... well. Can i use bold words on this review? Its F****** amazing! I went through a list of music on the CA website, and all the things it said to watch for were there. Daft Punk – Get Lucky, sounded like an extremely well recorded piece, English Chamber Orchestra - Dido & Aeneas, Act 3: But Death, Alas, the spatial seperation was there, Lou Reed – Walk on the Wild Side made me tap my foot, Beck – Morning the bass was amazing, so clear not over the top.. silky would be the word. Ive been hearing things in music ive listened to for years that ive never heard before. I spent sunday listening to every Pink Floyd album on vinyl, and just couldnt stop! I know these records intimately, and it really felt like i was listening to them for the first time. (PS the vinyl set up is great, its dead quite, no hums and no messing around with grounding to improve things) Even my wife came in the other day and said "wow... what did you do? That sounds amazing!" And sat down for two hours and listened to streamed music with me. One thing Im loving, at a lower volume, it STILL sounds fantastic. You dont need to turn it up to get yourself to feel the music, the feeling is always there. It brings the music alive, the way it was ment to be heard. The big question is, is this worth the money? YES... YES IT IS!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great at first Had my untit just over 3 years now paired with the 851a, initially I would of said 5star amazing sound but over the past 12 months the right hand channel would produce no sound on start up. After several minutes you would get a hiss and sound would eventually come through. Now I get no sound at all through the right channel... Not what you expect for over a grand after 3 years, I have a techics hifi over 20 years old that still works perfectly... Would I recommend this product, hard to say!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazed and Confused! I bought the 851n to replace a cheaper and also highly regarded streamer as I felt that I needed something more in line price wise with the rest of my set up. I have a Roksan Blak amplifier and Dynaudio Special Forty speakers. I bought the 851n online for a good price and was originally sold by Richer Sounds Sheffield. I did a lot of research in choosing this streamer after reading numerous reviews. Overall I’m very happy with it and probably don’t even use half of it’s features. I don’t store any files, but just download music and the sound quality is excellent. I use Tidal Hi-Fi Quality(the more expensive option) as this means that I can get high resolution or MQA(Masters Quality Authenticated) streaming or can I? It’s all a bit confusing because since buying the streamer I’ve been on various forums, read customer reviews and been on the Cambridge Audio website. The CA website recommends using Tidal Hi-Fi tier, but I’ve also found out that the 851n’s DACs won’t decode MQA files, which I feel is defeating the object. I’ve read though that the 851n has ATF upsampling which makes the most of any music file played through it, so it really does sound good, whether playing a CD quality(16 bit) or an MQA(24 bit) recording. Another gripe that I have is with the Steammagic app which doesn’t really support Tidal. I can get Tidal through it, but it’s via AirPlay and when playing music through it, you don’t know whether it’s playing a CD quality or high resolution(MQA) recording. And the same goes for tha CA Connect app. The best app that I’ve found to use, thanks to reading a forum is the Mconnect app for streaming Tidal. I use an iPad or my Samsung phone as a remote control and when playing music it will display on screen as to what resolution the music is playing. MQA files will be displayed as MQA Original 96khz. So, to summarise I’m very happy with the 851n. It all depends on the recording obviously, but can be outstanding with some recordings, even CD quality. I’m just confused as to whether I’m getting the best out of it with regard to streaming Tidal, hence the four stars rather than five.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this purchase Have only had the Azur 851N for a week now but I have been very pleased with the sound quality and features. I replaced a Stream Magic 6 and the difference is very notable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fabulous Sound. Easy to set up I bought the Azur 851N to replace a Logitech Transporter which had given great service for 10 years. I assumed (correctly) that the DAC technology would result in much improved sound. The reviews for the Azur were consistently good and I liked the idea of buying British. Sure enough, the sound quality is superb, and the set up via my iPad could not have been easier. I would give the unit 5 stars, but the is not yet direct access to Amazon Music HD via the Azur, and so I have to use Apple Play if I want to stream from Amazon. Cambridge Audio have told me that they have plans to include Amazon HD into the Stream Magic app in 2020, so then it would be a 5-star item. Great bit of kit! NB. I bought the unit through Richer Sounds in Brighton. Very good service.
