”Rarely does Cambridge fire too wide of the mark, but the Duo hits right at the centre of the target.”– ‘What Hi-Fi’ – 5 Star review.

Quality headphone amp

If you want to hear every nuance and background detail of your favourite music then listening with headphones takes some beating. Use the dedicated headphone amp built into the Duo and you’ll experience a whole new level of detail. With a precise volume control you’ll get exactly the right level – whatever your choice of headphones.

Perfect for amps without a phono preamp built-in
Many amplifiers no longer come with a built-in phono preamp, which is fine if you don’t use vinyl but not so good if you want to spin some records. The Cambridge Audio Duo is a dedicated phono preamp, meaning you can add a record deck to just about any amp or system with a standard AUX input. This means your choice of stereo amp or receiver is greatly expanded and, of course, you can retain the Duo phono preamp if you upgrade your main amp.

Perfect for amps with a phono preamp built-in!
Even if your main amplifier already has a phono preamp built-in, the chances are that the one inside the Duo is considerably better. Using a dedicated, switch mode power supply, the Duo is far quieter than most built-in phono preamps. The revised circuit board layout with surface-mount components further reduces noise and distortion. Factor in the shielded casing and you’ll simply hear more music and less background noise.

MC cartridge compatibility
One of the biggest advances over its little brother, the Solo, is the ability to amplify MC (Moving Coil) cartridges. These have an even lower output than MM (Moving Magnet) cartridges and require dedicated amplification. Once correctly amplified, the sound quality is stunning with a smoother yet more detailed sound. If you're serious about vinyl then fitting a good quality MC cartridge is an upgrade that you won’t regret.

Subsonic filter
Not all records are pressed the same – due to the poor quality of vinyl used, some sound considerably nosier than others. Wear and tear can play its role in reducing the quality, too. With its subsonic filter, the Duo filters out low frequency rumble; reducing distortion and protecting your speakers’ woofers from excessive wear.

Give your system a double whammy upgrade, with the Cambridge Audio Duo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So pleased. I was reasonably happy with a cheapish preamp for my aged Rega Planar 3 deck but listening with headphones was complicated with my set up. I decided on the Cambridge Duo primarily for the headphone amp rather than add yet another plug for a separate headphone amp and the existing preamp. I am so pleased I chose the Duo even though the price was a bit high for my budget. My vinyl has gained a new life, so much more detail and range. Listening with headphones is wonderful. A very neutral (bass v treble) and detailed experience. Sadly it has exposed the weakness of the rest of my system and I now need to review my main amp and speakers HiFi is a dreadful disease!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expansive soundstage, great detail ... buy one! This is one of those purchases that I wish I’d made ages ago.. lifted the sound of my turntable to dizzying new heights... beautiful, wide soundstage, exquisite timing and drags detail I’ve not heard before out of my records. Add to this I ordered online the Sunday before Christmas (Preston didn’t have one in stock) and it was here at 10.30am the next day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoying vinyl again with a great pre amp. I bough this a few weeks ago on the advice of the instore staff at Swiss Cottage who were very knowledgeable and helpful. It's definitely given my vinyl a boost. Loving it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of kit Recently purchased this as an upgrade from the old Cambridge Audio 640p (which I was also very impressed by) and it sounds fantastic! A lot more open and precise the the previous model and my partner loves the fact it has a dedicated headphone output. Just need to save my pocket money for a high end set of headphones! Many thanks to Steve in the Reading branch for his help and the cup of tea

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great amp. Lifts the records plus a headphone amp Flew in from Denmark to pick up this amp after a short correspondence with the shop. The Duo really lifts my records more than the previous amp and has the added bonus of a headphone amp. Looks very stylish also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cambridge DUO This is the second unit I bought from Richer Sounds at Swiss Cottage. The first one got " borrowed " by my son 12 month ago and didn't make its way back since !!! A no brainer at this price point and with this features. Just look inside and see the quality you get. The sound is hard ( if not impossible) to beat at this point. You might get better if you go north of £1200 the DUO is that good !!! Invest your £££ into a good MC cartridge and start spinning and enjoying vinyl. All said and if I had to buy another one I would. Highly recommended. Well and the guys in the shop are great and know there stuff. Longstanding RS Customer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magic box I bought this to replace a cheap starter preamp. Wow, I wasn't expecting such a big difference. Not only is my vinyl sounding better but it sounds much cleaner. Many of the blemishes have been filtered out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sounds good Nice well built little unit. Used the moving magnet stage with two turntables, one with a Ortifon OM-10 and the other and OM-5e - sounded great on both but only marginally more revealing than the phono stage built into my Yamaha-RX-A3030 av amp on the former, and built into the latter Project VT-E turntable. The B&W DM602 S3 speakers in the 3030 setup may be limiting the improvement evident and I plan to compare against roksan kandy stage with kef LS50s i have in my studio when I have more time. Not tried the moving coil stage but this is an option unavailable on any other phono preamp in my possession and may be useful one day. The headphone amp sounds great. No complaints re sound with B&W p7's, however, as the P7's are very easy to drive and yet I still have the volume knob turned high, I suspect this headphone amp will sound under powered with certain headphones and would recommend demoing with low sensitivity models. Anyway, no complaints but has not knocked my socks off. Perhaps it would if other limiting factors were addressed but difficult to judge until i try with the LS50s.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact but great sound I purchased this primarily as a Headphone amp, with the preamp ready for when I upgrade to amp and speakers. I am using Grado SR125 headphones and the sound from the Duo is clear and spacious.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great example of a well rounded Pre amp Wanted something that could really lift my technics 1700 as well as give me upgrade options for my stylus setup long term. Well worth the money for the quality build and performance

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect addition to my system I bought this pre-amp to complement my turntable and revive my vinyl collection. I love it’s simplicity. The sound is superb

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's the little things My amp has a built in phono stage, as does my turntable, however, the music was always lacking in volume and that "vinyl" sound. I popped into Hanley store and opted for the Duo as it offered headphone socket and will support a future upgrade to Moving Coil. Unit is a small unit, well made and has a nice weight to it. Set up was simple, up and running in 10 minutes. First LP I played, Hounds of Love by Kate Bush and I was blown away by the amount of detail the Duo was pulling out of the disc. Songs that are very familiar, suddenly have a new sound. The details it digs out are truly amazing and all for under £200. Bass is delivered with warmth and depth, mid range is full of detail and the highs pop out creating a wonderfully open soundstage. If you want to hear what your records should sound like, get one of these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny! Having previously owned a cheap pre amp and turntable I decided I wanted to upgrade so I bought this and a Pro-ject essential III, I couldn’t be more happy, it’s brought my music to life. Would highly recommend this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from More flexibility neede Beautifully made very good sound if a little “safe”. The output is not enough in my system especially on headphones. I have no doubt the output of my MM cartridge is the problem so a variable output adjustment would be better than the balance adjustment on the rear. The usual efficient and friendly service from Richer Sounds. I will have to sell the unit on sadly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a fantastic phono stage! I had recently upgraded from a CXA60 to a CXA80 and bought the CXNv2 (connected with XLR cables). I have a Project Debut Carbon II turntable and this was hooked up to the Cambridge Audio 651P. It was a very good sound coming through the turntable and amp. However, I decided to look at an upgrade and spoke to Tech Support at Cambridge Audio and decided to bite the bullet and buy the Duo phono stage. The headphone socket and ability to listen with an amp built into the Duo was the deciding factor. It looks and feels very solid and aesthetically is very pleasing. Very easy to set up and had it working within minutes. I compared the sound between the 651P and Duo back to back, starting with The Blue Nile "Tinsel Town in The Rain". The sound stage and separation was markedly better with the Duo and the sound was so clear and there were little accents that came through far clearer. I then put on Kraftwerk "Autobahn" and the punch and bass was fantastic. This album is 44 years old - I bought it in 1974 - so it's had a fair bit of use. What I did notice (quite markedly) was that some of the background noise from the album (clicks etc.) were much reduced with the Duo. I decided to try Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" which was bought in 1973, followed by David Bowie "Ziggy Stardust" bought in 1972; both of these vinyls have had literally hundreds of hours of play ranging from 1970's portable type record players right through the range of different turntables to my current Debut Carbon II. In each case the vinyl sounded much clearer and the noise levels were much lower. I then tried the headphones through the Duo amp and the sound was superb. I tried using Bowers & Wilkins P7 and PX headphones - both sonically great headphones. I was very pleased with the performance. My TV runs through the CXNv2 and the CXA80, but now I can listen to music while others are watching TV! Overall this is shaping up to be a great buy and will only sound better as it's run in. Would I recommend it? Most definitely!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality stock and helpful staff I got this pre-amp for a top end pro-ject turntable. It's basically the best in the price range. It takes moving coil (MC) and moving magnet (MM) inputs and has a headphone output. That comes in really handy when listening to music late at night with headphones on as no need to fire up the amp. This is a very tidy, stylish and n-nonsense product. 10/10

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value good sound I bought this as stopgap while saving for a £1000+ phono stage. No longer sure I will bother with the more expensive one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded expectations on all levels. Initial impressions were that it looks beautiful and feels SOLID. Love the headphone option. Sonically it is so much of an improvement on my NAD PP3, Edwards Audio Apprentice and various (Sony ES and NAD) built in phono stages it isn't worth a detailed comparison: EVERTHING is more natural, more detailed and alive. Yes, it cost more than my other units, but it feels like a steal! I would add a video if I had a decent camera. For most vinyl players this is all you will ever need. I have decided to keep my Project Xpression II/Ortofon OM30/Speed Box II combo because I am smitten with the way the Duo makes it sound. My NAD C162/370 and old KEFs have also been reborn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from terrific phono amplified I have a Linn LP12, fitted with an Akito arm and using a Lingo power supply. I wasnt sure if this would be good enough for my turntable but decided to change my phono amp after seeing the What HiFi review and am glad i did. Its a terrific phono amp and with plenty of punch. To have the headphone ouitlet is a real bonus. Ddefinitely a nother great Cambridge product.
