Mixing class-leading surround sound quality with the power to thrill, the Arcam AVR550 brings home cinema to life.

Power boost
With multi-channel power up from 60 watts per channel (AVR390) to a mighty 90 watts, the AVR550 delivers smooth, effortless power. The 50% increase in power not only improves music and soundtrack dynamics but also fills larger rooms more easily. That extra drive comes in handy for less efficient speakers, too.

The Arcam sound difference
Using audiophile-grade components, the AVR550 delivers quality to match the power. At the heart of this Arcam AVR is a toroidal power supply. Unusual for an AV receiver, this type of power supply is more usually only found in high-end stereo amps. It helps the AVR deliver smooth, dynamic sound that works equally as well with music as movies.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X with decoding up to 7.2.4 for totally immersive sound
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are now well established as providing truly immersive sound through ceiling or up-firing speakers. The Arcam AVR550 offers both systems, giving a 5.2.2 system with twin ceiling or up-firing speakers. This, however, is just the start. With processing for 7.2.4 channels, you can add a 4-channel power amp (or two stereo power amps) and not only double the ceiling speaker count but also add additional effect speakers – giving total sound immersion.

IMAX Enhanced Technology
IMAX has partnered with DTS and award-winning Hollywood sound mixers to deliver stunning levels of sound quality. Only the highest quality home cinema equipment meets the standard. IMAX enhanced content is due on HDR streaming and UHD Blu-ray and promises to offer the next step-up in sound from the already impressive DTS:X.

Wide-ranging connectivity
Featuring seven HDMI inputs and three outputs, the AVR550 handles the most complex AV systems. The six HDMIs are HDMI 2.0a and HDCP2.2 compatible (for UHD 4K sources) with the seventh being MHL compatible (for connecting a smartphone). Other inputs include six digital and seven analogue (with a front-mounted 3.5mm AUX) inputs, making this Arcam AVR hugely adaptive to all types of sources.

HDMI Zone 2 output
Triple HDMI outputs make the AVR550 even more versatile. Use two of the outputs within the same room for connecting a TV and projector simultaneously. The third HDMI is independent, making it ideal for sound and vision in a second room (HDMI2.0a/HDCP2.2 compatible).

Dirac Live for Arcam gives you the very best sound in your room
For the very best sound in your room, Arcam has included powerful room correcting technology from Dirac Research. This uses a microphone and dedicated software to take multiple readings around your room and feed the information back to the amplifier for a completely bespoke response (professional set-up recommended).

Network control
Connect to your network via Ethernet (wi-fi not included) and you get access to a wide range of networking features. These include UPnP (Universal Plug n’ Play) for streaming from other network devices, Spotify Connect (requires Spotify Premium account) and Internet radio.

Internet, DAB and FM – all the radio you need
Internet radio opens up access to a choice of hundreds of radio stations from around the world. Backing this up, the built-in DAB and FM tuners give wide-ranging access to all your favourite stations, including popular digital only stations, such as BBC 6 Music and 4 Extra.

MusicLife control app
Take full control of streaming music to your Arcam device with the MusicLife control app (now available for Android and Apple iOS devices). Working through your networked system, it lets you stream music directly from your device as well as servers or computers connected via UPnP (Universal Plug n’ Play). The latest version brings Internet Radio, Podcasts plus streaming from TIDAL and Qobuz. Advanced features, such as library searching, sorting, shuffle and repeat playback are also catered for.

Power and quality come together, to make the Arcam AVR550 an unbeatable AVR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sounds great Bought to replace a top spec Pioneer that died. Arcam AVR550 sounds better on all sources, especially 2 channel music. Relative simplicity makes it much nicer to use than most AV receivers, and Dirac room calibration works brilliantly. A few typical Arcam quirks, but all round a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AVR550 Now that Arcam have replaced amp, it was the perfect opportunity to buy this amp and at a fantastic price. Ordered direct from Cambridge shop and service was excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb AVR Upgraded from an Arcam AVR500, which I thought was great, but the AVR550 is a major step up. The AVR 500 was fun, but the AVR550 feels like a real cinematic experience with excellent sound processing. It is also wonderful with music, whereas I didn't enjoy the AVR500 with music as it was too bland. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great amp at a great price This is my third arcam avr receiver, with each being in the system about 5 years. Buy arcam principally for reliable 2-channel performance, and this is no exception. Most powerful amp I have had, and this does seem to improve things - there is bags of room at the volumes I listen to. Advantage in finally being able to hook up 4k sources, and the Dolby Atmos has proved better that I imagined it would. Audio performance is again very good, and video is great. Dirac software is also a useful addition, tho' I am still experimenting with that. Kind of a steal at this price while they are around

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ancient technology, high costs but has character I ended up spending far more than I intended after the first Dennon X3600h arrived dead and it would have taken a month to replace due to Covid restricting stock levels. I first set it up with existing AV cables and speaker wire but it is very fussy, I ended up going through 4 HDMI cables before finding one that could consistently managed a Dolby Vision picture. Surprisingly this wasn't the most expensive cable! With all the cables I have consistently had issues with ARC and never fully managed to get return audio so have had to resort to using an optical cable which can't pass the latest atmos sound format if using a TV app to stream a picture. As you will see on all the forums it's highly recommended you upgrade the microphone (around £100) to set up Dirac which was relatively simple although from reading other posts this isn't always the case. You can easily end up playing with the settings for days so only buy this AV Receiver if you have a lot of free time. The software on the unit feels ancient, the latest firmware version (7.13) isn't stable and a final update to correct several issues has been promised for over 1 year and is now unlikely to arrive. Many users have downgraded to 4.41 for stability but some features like IMAX are therefore missing. The final frustration is the remote, it is quite frankly horrendous especially when combined with a partially working TV ARC connection. Basic tasks like switching on and changing source can have random consequences for other ir controlled devices. You really need to invest in a Logitech Harmony (>£100) especially if you want to use ARC as display doesn't even have a button on the remote! Finally on a more positive note it does sound good for both films and music, which is its primary function, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort especially as it is now discontinued model and further support may not be forthcoming. I probably should have returned it in the first 14 days as it could be regarded as expensive if you expect the basic functions to constantly work. But it does have character and I spent money on accessories, far too long playing with sound curves and more time trying to get the thing to connect to my TV so missed the cut off!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Amp You have to appreciate that this amp was designed and released in 2016/17 and yet it has many of, if not all the features included in most of the top end “new” models. Dirac is an amazing feature and by far the best calibration software available on the market (worth picking up a umik mic for best results). That coupled with the fact it’s sub £1500 when compared to its £2699 RRP I’m very happy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality item Excellent sound and picture but difficult set up and manual inadequate

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Arcam AVR 550 For some months I have been looking to upgrade my existing amplifier. After much discussion I managed to get a socially distanced test of the amp at Richer Sounds in Prestwich. I am so pleased I did. The Arcam has been with me for 3 weeks now and is unbelievably good. It is a powerful, rich, clear sounding amp. I have mine connected to some large mordant short floor standers and the sounds is astonishing. Set up was fine, and not at all as difficult as some reviews have suggested. I would though recommend giving yourself a good few hours to run through the Dirac live set up, as the instructions from Dirac are rather limited. Better to watch one of the many Dirac Live YouTube videos available to assist. I accept recommend this amp enough.
