”AudioQuest's most expensive DragonFly DAC is worth every penny.”– ‘What Hi-Fi’ 2018 award winner.

The highest quality DragonFly to date

The DragonFly Red uses the highest quality DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) ever used in a DragonFly, giving true audiophile sound quality. The 32-bit ESS 9016 chip is more usually found in high-end hi-fi equipment and boasts an astonishing signal to noise ratio, making it sound more precise and detailed than the DragonFly Black. Rather than using the Black's analogue volume control, it also deploys bit-perfect, digital volume. This reduces distortion still further, delivering an 'inky' black silence when the music demands.

Powers 'tricky' headphones
With a boost in output from 1.2V to 2.1V, the Red is far better at driving difficult headphones than the Black version. If you use larger headphones, with more powerful magnets, such as the Grado range or AudioQuest's own Nighthawks, then the Red model is ideal. The higher output gives effortless dynamics, a powerful bass and ability to make the music 'come to life'.

Lower power consumption - ideal for use with your smartphone or tablet
With lower power consumption than previous DragonFlys, the DragonFly Red is suitable for use with smartphones and tablets without undue battery use. Simply fit a USB adaptor to suit your device and connect up to an Apple or Android smartphone or tablet for a massive improvement in sound quality.

A sound upgrade for your Mac, PC or laptop

Whether you listen to music on your smartphone, tablet, Mac, PC or laptop, the audio quality can easily be improved. Whether you use headphones or have your device connected directly to your hi-fi, the DragonFly Red simply gives a huge improvement in sound quality. It bypasses the device's built-in DAC, instead passing sound through its own, high-end hi-fi quality chip.

Small package, big sound

Although tiny, the DragonFly is every bit as impressive as many full-size DACs. Asynchronous transfer and twin clocks ensure perfectly timed and controlled digital information enters the DAC, for a highly accurate and precise sound quality. Compared to a computer/smartphone/tablet's headphone output you'll notice a more dynamic sound with more detail and openness. In essence, the sound will simply be more life-like.

Supports multiple music file formats
Despite its tiny size, the DragonFly will play a wide variety of music files. Twin clocks ensure perfect playback of 44.1 kHz (CD quality), 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz. As a final neat touch, the DragonFly logo glows various colours to indicate the file frequency: green for CD (44.1 kHz), blue for 48 kHz, amber for 88.2 kHz and magenta for 96 kHz.

Use pretty much any headphones on almost any device and experience your music to its full potential - the DragonFly Red meets the highest expectations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product at a Reasonable Price Bought this in order to start listening to music at higher fidelity on my mobile device. It's doing the job!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I bought this simply because my laptop headphone socket developed a fault and it was a quick fix for that. Beyond that I wasn't expecting much else but I am thoroughly impressed with the sound I get with Tidal Masters. I tried Tidal Masters a while back and downgraded the subscription because I couldn't hear any difference with the initial decoding that Tidal does. But the Dragon Fly performs the next step in handling MQA and the I think the difference is huge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent DAC-amplifier I am using this USB DAC-amplifier with a pair of BeyerDynamic DT 880 Pros. They sound simply divine. If I were to plug these headphones directly into a headphone jack and adjust the volume upwards, my ears would ring with tinnitus after listening. The Dragonfly Red's 2.1 V output ensures that the headphones are properly driven. They sound beautiful and, best of all, I have no tinnitus after listening. The DragonFly Red has a variety of sample rates (up to 96,000 Hz) and a very clear colour-coded LED to indicate what the current sample rate is. The cherry on top of the cake is that, in addition to working with Windows 10 and Linux (Ubuntu 18.04), this works perfectly with Android mobile phones too. As such, after buying a cheap USB-C to USB-A converter, I can listen to everything on my phone or tablet seamlessly. Very happy!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does a job, but pricey and not without fault - Context: OK. So I initially bought this for use with my phone but, a few weeks on, I'm still waiting for the Dragontail to come from Audioquest so can't comment on how it does there. So that's a little unfair. It's designed to be portable that's not the context I've been using it. I have, however, been using it this week with my [work] laptop in this work-from-home world we're in, having picked up a little amp to make use of 'old' speakers. Decent laptop, HP Elitebook of some kind, professing to have some B&O in there somewhere. I'm streaming Tidal HiFi through a cheap UGreen 3.5mm-to-RCA to a Cambridge Audio Topaz AM1 amp, Chord Company Sarsen cables and to Monitor Audio Bronze 2 speakers. I've also used it (from the laptop) with my Sennheiser HD599 cans on brief occasion, although I abandoned that for reasons that I'll get to. - Pros: Moving from the laptop's own jack to this little dealy I notice an improvement in punch across the board, high-end clarity and detail. It makes for a genuinely more lively performance, brighter but not without bringing the bass along. So that's all good. But. - Cons: More noticeable through the headphones (which could be owed to deficiencies in how the speakers are arranged tbf), it seems to bring a slight loss in dynamic range and imaging. Furthermore, and much more so with the headphones than speakers, it can be somewhat tiring to listen to (odd since those headphones have always proven to be super chill listening experiences). Another complaint that I don't know whether to levy to this, the laptop, the stream or what, after a couple days' use my Tidal started to freeze mid song during play back. Skipping track resumed playback, but this problem has continued to occur. Removing the device and using the laptop's headphone jack has returned to smooth listening. Final niggle, the case adheres to the inner workings by some tiny pins in the back plate locking into the case and securing it by tension around the device itself. I know this because, when putting the lid back on, the whole thing pushed out the back of it. This seems to have been remedied with the careful application of superglue, but that really wasn't what I expected for such a cost. - Closing thoughts: So I don't know about this device. Given that my laptop produces better sound than my phone, I imagine it would be a pretty significant improvement on phone audio (and the headphones I'd use it with aren't quite as fancy as the Sennies). That said, I would expect those issues of lessened dynamics and an at-times-exhausting peakiness to persist. Plus, yknow, slightly shoddy craftsmanship. But I also have no similar device experience to compare it to, so...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing sound Bought this to use with an iPhone and a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones. Huge improvement over the Apple lightning to headphone adapter. In fact I now understand why the WH-1000XM3 headphones are raved about so much. Then I tried the Dragonfly Red on my main system (MAC mini playing ALAC files into Cambridge Audio Edge NQ + W with Monitor Audio Gold 200 speakers) and unbelievably it sounded better than the Edge NQ DAC! I'm enjoying listening to my music collection more and for longer periods now - it sounds more analog and with better defined bass and it doesn't lose any sound stage (which is what this system does so well). Thoroughly recommend this amazing DAC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sound! Bought my first ever DAC AudioQuest DragonFly Red, and the difference is amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made huge difference Bought a couple of weeks ago for use with iPhone /iTunes - amazing what a difference it has made. So much so that I’ve redownloaded my CD’s at high resolution (apple lossless ALAC) rather than usual mp3 - music has never sounded better . You do need a lightning/usb converter though

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Woof! Am no audiophile, but was seriously impressed with the welly this gave my new open backed headphones - was such a step up. Does exactly what i needed - turn my laptop into a hifi system. Love it
