"Class leaders are constantly being replaced in hi-fi, but rarely is it done so soundly as by Cambridge Audio’s CXA81 integrated amp." ‘What Hi-Fi’ 2019 Product of the Year.

The amp that does it all

Engineered to the highest standards, the CXA81 delivers class-leading sound quality. The 80 watt amp is powerful enough for the largest rooms and the most power-hungry speakers. A built-in ESS DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) means you get the best from your digital, as well as analogue sources. Thanks to standard Bluetooth, you can now stream music in top quality aptX HD. All this, plus the Lunar Grey CXA81 looks more stylish than ever.

Powerful sound from the toroidal transformer
Powerful sound begins with the power supply, which is why Cambridge Audio use an audiophile quality, toroidal transformer. Renowned for their low noise, high efficiency and superior sound quality, the over-sized transformer gives the CXA81 a powerful, dynamic sound and a hefty 80W per channel power output - enough for ‘party level’ sound in even the largest domestic spaces.

Digital inputs with top spec DAC for detail
Featuring a reference standard ESS Sabre ES9016K2M DAC, the CXA81 works wonders with your digital audio and video sources. With two optical digital inputs and one coaxial, you can connect up to three digital sources, such as a games console, TV and a CD transport – the Cambridge Audio CXC makes the perfect match.

Bluetooth as standard
Now a standard fitment, Bluetooth offers simple, wireless music streaming from your mobile, tablet or laptop. Stream stored music or popular music streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. The Bluetooth receiver is compatible with aptX HD, giving the highest quality sound possible from Bluetooth, right up to 24bit/48kHz. You also get the benefit of the sound passing through the ESS Sabre DAC, meaning precise, detailed sound from all your streamed music.

The best from USB audio, with Hi-Res sound
If you enjoy Hi-Res sound, you’ll love the CXA81. Using an asynchronous USB socket at the rear, you can connect up to your laptop, PC or server and stream Hi-Res music, right up to studio-quality 32bit/384kHz and DSD256. As well as improving the sound over your computer’s soundcard, the asynchronous ‘direct control’ link also greatly reduces jitter, for lower distortion and more precise audio.

Professional connection
More usually found on 'reference' hi-fi and professional equipment, the CXA81 boasts balanced XLR inputs. When connected to a suitable source, this gives a fully balanced, hot/cold, connection for the ultimate analogue signal quality.

All for analogue
The Cambridge CXA81 has four line level inputs - enough for all your analogue sources. A pre-amp output is also fitted – ideal for power amp upgrades. Other handy connections include an RCA subwoofer output, headphone socket and connections for two pairs of speakers.

Connected for installs
A wide range of control sockets make the CXA81 ideal as part of a more complex home installation. RS-232C, IR input, trigger in/out sockets and Control Bus RCA phonos mean the CXA81 is more than happy to work with a wide range home automation control systems.

Vibration resistant casing
With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the player from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise. Isolating feet help adsorb vibration for a further reduction in distortion.

Sleek new finish
The CXA81 is part of the refreshed CX-Series 2. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXA81 a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the CXC CD transport, CXN V2 network player. The Lunar Grey front panel contrasts with the black top and sides and blends well with both black and silver separates.

Complete versatility meets the finest sound, with the Cambridge Audio CXA81.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound Bought this amplifier to replace an aging Marantz receiver and to partner a Cambridge CXN that I've had for a couple of years. Really pleased with the sound, plenty of power and ease of use. CXA and CXN together produce a truly great listening experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from At last: high quality that is affordable. Having had several bites of the cherry in my attempts to obtain high quality stereo sound, this Cambridge Audio CXA81 really meets my expectations. My modest set up, with a pair of Kef Q350s playing uncompressed digital music tracks gives me gives me great satisfaction at a very modest cost. Its DAC is of the highest order. The CXA81 is handsome and easy to set up with the aid of its functional remote control. Well done Cambridge Audio!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing detail! Tested this amp in shop alongside the AudioLab 6000A, for me the difference in price is completely justified. Also compared the Cambridge CXA61 but felt the CXA81 with improved DAC (which is important to me) has the edge, as it should, and was worth paying the extra rather than regret it at a later date! (not an everyday purchase). Very detailed separated sound with an amazing sound stage, my floor standers could do with an upgrade but this amp really brings out the best in them. Listening to albums and hearing so much more detail than before. Feels and looks like a very premium product. Have to thank Jason in Maidstone branch for his patience with my varied music for testing. As always extremely helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous amp and hifi upgrade I recently bought this amp, along with the CXC and CXN V2 as a replacement to my great little Marantz CR603- wanting to get into quality separates thou I loved the little Marantz. Wow- what a piece of kit! RS Plymouth store were brilliant and let me demo the CXA81 with my current trusty Kef IQ50’s - playing cds via the CXC, streaming with the CXN and also comparing to the naim atom. Don’t get me wrong the Naim is amazing, but at its price point less a CD (I still have a,large collection of the silver discs) I wanted an all options set up- this delivers it in spades. If you eve wondered what all the hifi guff about soundstage; dynamic range, detail and depth of presentation - well this is what that sounds like! Truly a top end piece of kit, I haven’t stopped listening to my music and rediscovering sounds Borg from discs and the wonderful CXN linked to the amp by XLR connection- yes good cables do make a difference, and this thing is pure audio gold. As much as I loved the Marantz, this is a serious step up and I doubt would be bettered unless you spent a considerable amount more. It’s brilliant!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cambridge CXA81 While purchasing a pair of speakers a Cambridge audio CXA81 was used with streamed music from Tidal. I managed to find a wonderful pair of speakers but was blown away with the CXA81 performance. I don’t listen to music at high volumes so it wasn’t the extra ‘watts’ that attracted me it was the superb control and presentation. I have an old Meridian 506 CD player but have chosen to use the built in DAC in the CXA81 as it offered more control and detail than the old Meridian. With vinyl it is probably at its best , there is no phono stage but don’t let this put you off . If your considering a new amp you would be wise to audition a CXA81. Another thing worth mentioning is the service I received at the Southampton store ( Paul C , many thanks). I have been enjoying listening to my old collection on both vinyl and have also found ‘new’ music just because of the pleasure my system now brings .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic sound Really glad I bought the Cambridge amp as the sound matched with the Oberon Dali speakers is superb and warrants the five star reviews in the media. Brings new meaning to my CD collection played through the Cambridge CX CD player. The amp manages a wide range of music effortlessly. really impressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cambridge Audio CXA81/CXC with Monitor Audio I had a demo for the Cambridge Audio CXA81 and CD playler CXC at the Southgate store with B&W speakers which were my preference, but on the advise of Mak the Deputy Manager he suggested listening to the Monitor Audio Silver 200 floor standing speakers with this amp, I was so impressed with the difference that I heard that I bought them with the Cambridge Audio package even though the speakers were slightly more than I had budgeted for. This package should keep me from upgrading for some years to come. I haven't stopped listening to music since I got my new equipment. Even Hi Res music Bluetoothed from my Samsung phone phone sounds fantastic. Thank you to Mak for suggesting them and if anybody is in any doubt about buying any music equipment then ask the friendly staff at Richer Sounds for a demo and let your ears be your guide.
