"Extraordinary array of features; refined and revealing sound that puts musicians in the room... Smooth, svelte sounding amp with power."Hi-Fi Choice magazine.

Class XD amplifier design

What makes this amplifier very special is the Class XD amplification. This combines the best qualities of Class A amplification - smoothness and realism - with the best from Class B - power and control, without the disadvantages inherent with many Class AB designs. What you'll hear is a smooth, yet detailed sound quality with the ability to drive almost any speaker and a substantial power output.

Massive toroidal power supply
At its heart, the 851A is powered by a massive toroidal power supply, which accounts for a third of its the weight. Not surprisingly the 851A has a monster power output: 2 x 120W into an 8 ohms and an awesome 2 x 200 watts into a 4 ohms. What this means in terms of sound quality is deep, effortless bass. Furthermore, such is the control and current that the 851A handles tricky dynamic sections, such as the sweep of a full orchestra with consummate ease.

Power with control
The 851A can do subtle, too. By using a separate toroidal power supply for the pre-amp section, the 851A ensures that pre-amplified signals arrive at the power amp stage in the best condition possible and so are brimming with subtle detail. Short of having a separate pre/power amp combo, this separate power supply is the next best thing.

Dual mono configuration
With separate taps for the left and right channel from the power supply, and separate left and right amplifier circuits, the 851A is a true dual mono amplifier. By having separate circuits for the left and right channels, each channel has its own, distortion-free feed. This brings about greater separation between instruments, greater width of sound and enhanced realism.

Plenty of connections
With no fewer than eight audio inputs, the 851A is capable enough to handle even the most complex of systems. XLR balanced connections offer a professional-grade connection with compatible equipment, such as the 851C CD player and Stream Magic 6 network player. Fixed level inputs make it easy to use the Azur 851A as the front amplification as part of a home cinema system, while the large display can be programmed to name your sources, so that, for example, the PlayStation 3 input is labeled, 'PS3' rather than 'Aux 3'.

Full metal casing
Using a full metal casing with rounded edges, doesn't just look and feel good, it helps the sound, too. The case is rigid and well damped, so it won't resonance unhelpfully. The thick aluminium front panel looks the part and also acts as a shield against electrical interference from sources such as dimmers and RF devices. All these details combine to create an amplifier that not only looks stylish but also offers exceptional resistance to both mechanical and electrical interference.

To experience music more vividly than ever before, the Cambridge Audio Azur 851A provides your front row seat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A worthy upgrade Recently, due to my 14-year-old amplifier - NAD 3020 BEE - generating a number of faults, I decided to replace it with a mid-range one: the Cambridge Audio Azur 851A. It was certainly a significant difference, both in build and sound quality; so much so I'm considering replacing my also-14-year-old cd player, the NAD C 521BEE - with the matching Cambridge Audio Azur 851C Silver, next month - if Richersounds still have at least one left in stock, that is (I really wouldn't want to shop elsewhere).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top notch amp. Worth every penny and more! First things first. This is no looker of an amp by today’s standards. There is a basic display at the front with the settings and volume but there are more attractive amps on the market. If anything, it looks better in pictures than in real life. That said, I learnt over three decades ago that when it comes to Hi-Fi, looks mean nothing. It is all, obviously about the sound. This amp is now 9 years old and whilst at one stage the darling of the likes of What Hi-Fi magazine it was relegated to the back benches years ago and largely forgotten about when Cambridge Audio’s CXA 81 was released. When looking to see which one I wanted to buy I could not find any reviews / comparisons of the two but now I can give my opinion because I have had both and worked my way through a lot of other integrated amps on my way to this. The Azur 851A is a very very special amp. It has muscle and clout where it counts and is, in my view, far superior to the newer CXA 81. The detail and nuances in music are plainly apparent and rather than a smooth / warm (and potentially dull) sound this gives you a distinctly more V shape stage with exciting thumping bass and clear high ends. Where it also succeeds over and above many other amps in this price range is that you actually get a good solid mid-range and without mid-range what have you got if not a musical mess. There is no phono stage/ digital inputs/ Bluetooth or streaming but who cares when it has this sort of impact on the listener. You can add all of that. I am very happy with this purchase which came to me via the Plymouth store who offered platinum service as always with their advice and patience whilst I worked out what to buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it I originally bought an Arcam SA20 to go with my Monitor Audio Silver 200 speakers but was disappointed with the lack of low end performance. Richer sounds were very obliging in letting me swap (plus the difference) for this CA Azur 851A which I am much more happy with. It adds a decent thump to the low range and, if required, also has bass and treble controls if fine tweaking is required. I much prefer the interface and controls to the Arcam too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Smooth Sound, a Fabulous Amplifier In my second week of owning this amplifier and I love it. I spent best part of a year researching for a new amplifier and sadly due to pretty much most of that under lockdown I wasn't able to go to a store to demo it. So i looked at as many reviews as I could , spoke to people, read articles, looked on utube. I was naturally drawn to Cambridge as I had bought some of their products in the past and been very pleased. I wanted a totally analogue amplifier, although now I'm pretty much digital/streaming only. I saw no reason to pay for a DAC and digital connections on my amplifier as my network player would cover all that. I wanted reasonable amount of power and at least some slight bass and treble adjustment, didn't need a phono connection, needed a headphone socket . The Azur 851A Amplifier ticked all the boxes for me. In operation it gives smooth power and a nice natural sound, it's very easy to use and set up, nice you can rename all the sources. It has a balanced input XLR which is great to connect the equally fabulous Azur 851N Network Player (which will review separately). As the balanced connection is only with 1m length cables it probably makes no difference from using unbalanced but as balanced is supposed to better felt best to use it. It's not cheap but also in the scheme of things, with what you can spend its not terribly expensive either. I truly do recommend the Azur 851A amplifier to anybody that's looking in this price range its fabulous. As always Richer Sounds gave fantastic service a great deal on price and I would have to mention Felix who helped me on the tele sales, great help and very professional. I also took advantage and paid for the 6 year guarantee on this item which is something I don't usually do, I just felt that spending this much it was worth having, with the bonus if you don't use it Richer Sounds will give you the cost back at the end of the 6 years I can not imagine buying HiFi or TV stuff from anybody else, Thank You :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Amp' I needed to upgrade my existing amplifier and I have always been impressed with Cambridge Audio equipment so I narrowed my search to their specific amplifiers and it was the right decision. Easy to set up, I love the ability to customise the display and the amp' has fantastic features and power. Even leaving it on the automatic levels it's a beautiful clear sound from vinyl and CD. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Amp Big clear wide - fab. I use a DAC before it for all digital connects. But I can tell you, even with that when I use a phono in the sound is amazing still. My very old dual record player has just come alive with a seperate Cambridge Audio phone stage (this is an amazing tool as well) into this amp. It beats CD on original non digital recorded LP's.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound quality and easy to setup I bought this as a replacement for an older Azur model and so was already expecting it to be good quality but the ease of setup and functionality of this model was pleasing.
