"The latest version of the long-running Debut remains a winner. Recommended." What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine 5-star review.

Engineering from a class above

For some time now, the Pro-Ject Debut has been a near default choice in the budget turntable market - and for good reason. Rather than adding fancy automated mechanisms, Pro-Ject has always concentrated on giving the best engineering quality possible for the money. Following on from other award-winning Pro-Ject Debut turntables, the Debut Carbon DC offers a stunning specification with sound quality to match.

Carbon fibre tone-arm
The key feature with the Debut Carbon is the addition of a carbon fibre tone-arm tube. Usually only found on much more expensive turntables, a carbon fibre tone-arm tube provides significant benefits to the sound quality. Being stiffer than steel, the tone arm is more rigid. This helps convey the music more accurately as there's also reduced arm resonance. In short, the music sounds tighter, punchier and more detailed than before.

Tweaks taken from the SE model
The revised Debut Carbon comes with a larger and more stable platter, providing a more solid bass response with added weight, while improved motor dampening using Sorbothane helps give better isolation. In terms of sound quality, isolating the motor means less background noise and a more dynamic and revealing sound.

Engineered for purity of sound
The rigid plinth with anti-vibration feet is ideal in providing a similarly taut sound quality. The motor itself is decoupled to further reduce vibration. Using a brass bearing housing and stainless steel axle, the platter hub is superbly engineered and built to close tolerances for fine sound and longevity. There's also a good quality Ortofon cartridge included, so it's ready to go straight out of the box.

Updated styling
With its gloss black plinth, the Debut Carbon looks far classier than previous Debut III models. Combined with its high quality engineering, this Pro-Ject turntable really does give the impression that it comes from the class above.

For quality vinyl replay, pure and simple, there's nothing to beat the Debut Carbon DC at this price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Return of the Mag (netic cartridge) I put off this purchase for some years. Having sold myself to the tiny silver discs three or four decades ago. During all that time, my extensive collection of vinyl had been converted to those shiny magical little discs. Despite my absolute conversion to the digital medium, there was always something missing.I missed the depth of bass, and was frequently disappointed at the muddy sound quality, all this despite considerable Financial investment in digital media players. Fast forward a couple of weeks and having recently rescued a large and rather heavy box of vinyl records from the dustbin, I made the long overdue decision to invest in a medium priced but good quality turntable. Following a reasonable wait, the turntable arrived, securely and safely packaged. I rescued it from its packaging and placed it in pride of place, adjacent to my hi-fi system. Sadly though no silver lining. I hadn't realised that my extortionately expensive, at the time, amplifier, required a pre-amp before I could use the turntable. There then followed, what seemed, but was probably a reasonable wait, for the pre-amp to arrive. Superfast re-assembly of the system later, and I was ready to go. First disc up, some relatively unknown band from Liverpool called the Beatles, and one of their lesser known albums 'Rarities'. The very first track 'Across the Universe' was an absolute revelation. The sound of wild birds burst out of the system speakers, filling the room with detail and the depth of bass I had longed for, for years. Can't speak highly enough of the Pro-ject Carbon turntable, a little tricky to set up, kept dropping the anti-skate balance weight, but once completed, an absolute joy. It produced the goods in trumps and I am absolutely delighted in my investment. Presently in the process of rediscovering all of those beautiful 12 inch albums I almost inadvertently consigned to the recycling bin. Welcome back analogue, a long time coming, but definitely worth the wait, even the Missus remarked at the clarity, a win, win situation and unreservedly recommended. A word of warning, I'm now really tempted to want to switch back to vinyl from cd, it ain't gonna happen as it would probably cost a kings fortune, but I will add to the collection bit by bit. Truly there ain't nothing like the real thing and its vinyl.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My vinyl has never sounded better Only had turntable for a couple of weeks now but I am very impressed with the sound and build quality of the Debut Carbon. My vinyl now sounds so alive and I am hearing detail I never heard from my old turntable. The Ortofon 2m cartridge sound great and I am hoping it gets even better once it breaks in.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as good as online review sites say Sold my Revolver vintage turntable, to purchase this turntable after looking at positive reviews online.Very disappointed with the build quality and noisy motor.Have since found , having looked on YouTube that this is quite common among other owners. How ever the turntable does play quite well.Only time will tell if this continues to be the case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vinyl LP's and singles I bought a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntable and it's class. It was the first time I'd ever set-up a turntable. I hadn't had one in decades and then I played my LP collection that I picked up from my Mum's and it really took me back. It's so great to play these songs again. The Denon amplifier looks a monster and is begging for tunes and I haven't even cranked it up yet. The Bowers and Wilkins speakers are majestic and will be duly deified. Thank you to Richer Sounds Liverpool for the chat, guidance, demonstration and for getting it all to me two days later and at a knock-down price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remembrance of times past Buying a first turntable after 40 years is terrifying, having heard a basic one a friend bought because it looked "vintage" I was less than impressed . I didn't want to spend a fortune as I already have a fab cd player and collection, but I did need something that would do my ancient vinyl collection justice. The thing with Richer Sounds is that they guide you so well and you never feel you are being patronised by a condecending audiophile. They care about quality but really try to offer you the best at the price point you need. The Carbon DC met not just my price point but it's audio quality made me fall in love with records I hadn't hear for 40 years, oh and it's easily upgradeable as well as a system, when I can afford it, perfect!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Minimalist turntable with simple control functions The turntable was delivered in the manufacturers packaging. All the components were securely packed and it will be easy to reuse the packaging for our pending house move. The turntable was simple to assemble although, as others have pointed out, the anti-skating weight is fiddly to locate. Having been using a vintage Ariston turntable for many years where the arm and platter were spring mounted within the chassis and wobbled at the slightest touch, I was surprised by how solidly mounted the arm and platter were on the Debut Carbon. Pro-Ject state that the motor is decoupled (utilising TPE-damping) and a stable speed control system minimises vibration. The turntable feet provide a resilient mounting but there is no adjustment facility so the support platform for the turntable must have some means of levelling to ensure the turntable platter is completely level. I have read reviews that mention that the arm rest has no locking clip. I have not found this to be a problem. The arm clips firmly into the ‘u’ shaped rest which is asymmetrical with an extended height on the record side so the arm has to be lifted over the rest and positioned at the lead-in track before lowering with the hydraulic lift. When I started doing listening tests the thing that stood out in particular was how well defined the sound stage is relative to what I have been used to. I am now finding that the listening position and speaker angle are much more critical to achieve the optimum result. The overall sound is well balanced; the bass is controlled although I have found that female vocals on some recordings can sound a little harsh at times. Overall I was looking for a minimalist turntable with simple control functions, where the cost has been put into the basic construction and operation, and that is exactly what I have got. I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon without hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality turntable Seems to be a good quality product. After a good clean with fluid recommended by a very knowledgable & helpfull member of staff, my old vinyl sounds way better than I ever expected. Must be amazing with all the upgrades.
