Carefully designed and superbly engineered, the Onkyo CP1050 turntable shows just what can be achieved when a major hi-fi company creates a new turntable from scratch.

Direct drive for precise speed

Unlike most of its competitors, the Onkyo CP1050 uses direct rather than belt drive to turn the platter. Using a low-torque motor reduces motor noise, meaning that a more detailed sound can emerge. For absolute speed stability, Onkyo uses a quartz-lock control and high quality bearings. The result is a super-smooth drive for stable and consistent sound quality.

Solid MDF casing
Rather than using plastic or a low-density chipboard, the Onkyo CP1050 uses MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) for its substantial casing. This provides a rigid support that effectively kills vibration, helping the deck to sound more accurate. To further aid isolation from vibration, it sits on four, height-adjustable, anti-vibration feet.

Die-cast aluminium platter
Another sign of the CP1050's superior construction quality is its die-cast aluminium platter. This offers two benefits. First, its weight provides mass damping and extra inertia to assist rotation stability. Second, the precision casting also ensures excellent uniformity of weight - again, an important feature in keeping the sound smooth and stable.

Quality tone-arm and cartridge
Supplied with the CP1050 is an S-shaped tone-arm with detachable headshell and adjustable weight. These features make it easy to change the cartridge and upgrade as you please. The supplied MM (Moving Magnet) cartridge is a great starter model and offers a lively yet balanced sound.

Ready to connect
Setting up the Onkyo CP1050 is easy. Simply adjust the feet to level the deck, attach the cartridge, wire up and you're ready to go. For added flexibility, phono sockets rather than a static phono lead are fitted, meaning you can fit the length and quality of interconnect you prefer.

Combining top quality construction with ease of use and a precise sound, the Onkyo CP1050 is the ideal player for your treasured vinyls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the turntable I wanted! I was looking for a home direct drive turntable with retro styling but modern technology, so I chanced upon the Onkyo CP-1050. It's perfect, what with its easy-to-use features, simple laid-out design and stunning looks. Of course, any turntable enthusiast worth their salt immediately upgrades not only the cartridge, but the leads (assuming they can, of course) also, not to mention buying a good quality phono amp. And the result? A sweetness of sound I hadn't heard before. I was immediately lifted to higher realms!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sounding turntable Have had one of these for 5 months now. It is well built, with a nice solid feel to it and a pleasing minimalist appearance. There is no built in phono pre amp or USB output. Hurray for that. These are plus points to me as it means I can use a good quality phono stage / pre amp of my own choosing. I am not interested in archiving my vinyl to computer. It is easy to set up and use. It has a push button speed change, in common with all of the other direct drive turntables that I have ever encountered. It will play at 45 or 33 RPM but not at 78RPM, but that is no problem to me as I do not own any 78 RPM vinyl. It has no auto start or return function being fully hands on manual operation. Hurray again, just what I wanted. All of the turntables I have ever owned have been manual operation, as in my experience they usually sound better and are more reliable than auto function turntables. I know this from the experiences of friends who have had auto operation turntables, which have sounded inferior to and not lasted as long as the manual operated decks I have had. I have read some reviews of this deck that complained of loose arm bearings. They seem fine on the turntable that I got, so perhaps this was an initial production problem that Onkyo have now sorted. The supplied cartridge is actually an Audio Technica AT3600 although the instruction manual lists it as something else. While it is OK to get you started, it is nothing special being one of the cheapest cartridges that Audio Technica produce. It is only a moderate quality cartridge. The deck deserves a much better quality cartridge. I have fitted mine with an Audio Technica AT95E cartridge that has been upgraded with a 95P paratrace stylus. The resulting sound is suberb. Very clear, with a good integrated midrange, bass and treble. There is a fair amount of detail retrieval, but not so much that it becomes distracting from the overall enjoyable flow of the music. I have had similar results using an older Ortofon 520 cartridge which still has a good stylus on it. The direct drive motor on mine is silent in operation and starts and stops the platter with immediate precision. It holds the correct speed very accurately and I think that this helps with the way that the deck copes so easily with dynamic swings in music. I like that the deck has a detachable headshell so that I can easily change over to a mono cartridge when I need to. When funds allow, I intend to fit an even better cartridge. According to a couple of reviews that I have read, this deck is capable of doing justice to cartridges that cost almost as much as the turntable itself. I intend to find out eventually but for now I am quite happy spinning one LP after another. If only I had more time to listen to this deck. If they made a pricier version of this deck with a heavier mass tonearm, I would probably start saving now.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great but a long wait Couldn't fault the turntable , exactly what I wanted BUT I had to wait a month to receive it even though the store said a maximum of 2 weeks...also very little communication throughout. Very pleased with the deck
