Featuring dual, ECC83 valves in its output stage, the Tube Box DS2 has that unique ‘valve flavour’ that makes the perfect match for vinyl. The dual-mono design also benefits from top quality components, precise RIAA equalisation and ultra-low noise circuits – letting you hear every breath of detail.
Switchable subsonic filter
With some speakers you might find subsonic noise causes a real problem. You’ll see the bass cones moving wildly as they struggle to reproduce inaudibly deep bass sounds. Cutting in below 20Hz, the filter protects the woofers from premature wear and ensures the bass you do hear is less distorted.
Easy cartridge adjustment
Unlike some phono pre-amps that require the lid off and pin rearrangements, the Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2 makes adjusting the cartridge loading easy. Facia-mounted controls command a wide range of parameters; ensuring your cartridge is perfectly matched to the amplifier. By optimising the sound of your specific cartridge, you’ll discover a resolution and level of detail that might previously have been masked. Both MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) cartridges are compatible.

I did a lot of research before buying this little wonder, and reviews in mainstream magazines and on websites tend to focus on the need to let the unit run in before coming to any conclusions about it. Well this is true, the sound I'm getting after two weeks of daily playing gets better and better. But - and this is the main point of this review - my TubeBox DS2 also sounded fantastic straight out of the box. Bought as an upgrade to the (very adequate) built-in phono stage of the Roksan K3 amp, the sound form the TubeBox was immediately richer, fuller, and warmly emotional. It may well be that, as many "professional" reviews suggest, the improvements to sound offered by the TubeBox are subtle and take time to reveal themselves, but it seems to me that such a verdict is based on comparing the Pro-ject product with other, similarly priced phono stages. If, like most people, you're looking for a first or second upgrade to a reasonably decent system, the TubeBox DS2 is worth every penny. One caveat though: after buying it, be prepared to not want to listen to cds ever again!
