'A hugely capable pair of closed-back headphones that just don't sound closed. Rousingly musical and with no obvious deficiencies.' What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine.

Group test winners

Fresh from their group test win where the AKG K550 headphones triumphed over nine rivals, these headphones come with the highly coveted 5-star What Hi-Fi award.

Reference sound quality
With decades of experience in the studio few can beat AKG's heritage. With the K550s, AKG have sought to recreate that studio sound with toned down aesthetics. Using large 50mm drivers and a closed back design gives these headphones a deep, powerful bass that's also very tightly controlled and realistic. And thanks to what AKG call, 'Real Image Engineering', the K550's sound open, accurate and engaging - even over extended listening periods.

Total comfort
With their large earpieces, the K550's wrap around your ears for total audio immersion. They're also lightweight and with the broad headband, very comfortable to wear. Although larger than the average headphone, the closed-back design prevents sound leakage, making them ideal for quality music on the go. The fold-flat ear cups also make them easier to pack in your bag.

If size doesn't matter but sound does, then the AKG K550 headphones are simply the best in their class - just ask What Hi-Fi!

Impedance is measured in ohms and should be matched carefully to the driving amplifier for the best sound quality and reliability.
Frequency Response
Frequency response is measured in Hz and gives an indication of how low and how high the headphones will go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sounding headphones I bought these headphones for home purposes,to listen to onkyo av receiver. They are a good quality build, not heavy or uncomfortable. The sound is first class, having listened to tangerine dream proteges,Node and Arc,with a good bass and treble complimenting one another. Highly Recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from At last, the right headphones for me Having managed to break my Bose headphones, I was in the market for a new pair of closed-back, over-ears. The AKG K550 Mk2 seemed to fit the bill: reasonably priced, great reviews on the whole. Some reviews, though, were critical of their flat sound and lack of bass. I have had these for a week and used them every day with a Linn deck and a Denon amp. Response is flat, for certain, but that is their strength. There is no artificially enhanced bass, and all frequencies are clear and bright. Very comfortable (softer earpieces than my old Bose). The lead seems substantial. They are rather large, though, and I would be wary of travelling with them, both for safety and for looks. All in all, the best pair of headphones I have owned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and sound quality I've been using these headphones for several months now - I bought them following my purchase of the Denon DM40 with Mission LX2 speakers, which showed me what sound I could achieve from my CDs, and exposed the weakness of my previous headphones. I am very pleased with this product - it delivers a great sound, even on difficult material such as piano music, which always seems to challenge sound systems. I find the long cable ideal, as I can choose to sit at a good distance from the hi-fi if I want to - some headphones I've owned in the past with shorter cables just don't offer this flexibility. They're also very comfortable to wear, even for long periods. Their relatively large size could be a problem for use out and about - this is not a concern for me, as I only intend to use them at home. I've also read reviews pointing out a certain lack of bass - I don't find this a problem in the music I generally listen to, but they might not be first choice for a metal fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Richer Sounds in comfort! What a great pair of headphones. Incredibly detailed and precise sound that makes you want to listen to all your music again, also very comfortable to wear. They also don't overcook the bass. Only downside is that there is a little sound leakage compared to some other models.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AKG K50 MK2 Excellent build quality and sound quality. Need a few hours to run in to get best performance from them. Extremely comfortable. Long lead cable has it's plus and minus and minus point subject to what you use them with. Seem to work well with all types of devices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Bought these to use with small high res audio player. Very comfortable. Good sound isolation and very very detailed. Superb build. Huge step up from my current akg 45bt

Rated 5 out of 5 by from huge difference Superb sound quality. Detailed. No need to use any equaliser settings. I am using mainly with a galaxy s7 and flac files. Despite looking bulky they fit well and headband exerts little pressure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small Heads Beware I should have tried these in-store before I bought them, having done so I may not have purchased them. My head is simply too small, even with the headphones at there smallest they are too loose and sit too low on the head - the clamping force is barely enough to keep them dropping off with general movement. I reckon modification with a thicker pad to the overhead strap may overcome some fit issues. Sound wise they are excellent, easily driven with phone, ipod, portable amp and computer. Personally there size and cable length makes them home or studio only headphones. Isolation could be better even with the large ear cups however I feel this is down to the fit.
