"The Y50s don't put a foot wrong as a pair of portable cans - and they're now even more affordable" What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision Award Winner 2016
AKG signature sound quality As you'd expect from AKG, the Y50s boast class-leading sound quality. Larger than the Y40 models, the Y50s are ideal for use both on the move and at home (a 6.35mm adaptor plug is included). The larger cup size ensures a deep, dynamic bass that still has the typical AKG precision and refinement. The closed-back design keeps both outside noise blocked and prevents leakage - making them a more commuter friendly pair of headphones.
Built-in mic for smartphone use Featuring a built-in microphone and one-button remote control, the Y50s are the perfect partner for most smartphones. Receive and drop phone calls without taking your phone out of your pocket or bag.
AKG quality and comfort The unique 3D-axis mechanism doesn't just make these headphones easy to fold and carry, it also ensures a perfect fit. The soft, padded, headband and ear pieces simply add to the long term comfort. Although light and comfortable, the Y50s are durable, too. A detachable cable and folding design helps when transporting the headphones, while a solid build quality is a step or two up from many rivals. A soft travel pouch is also included.
The perfect headphones for music on the go and at home, the AKG Y50s are another winner from AKG.
Are the headphones wireless? Optional requires a Bluetooth transmitter.
Do the headphones feature active noise cancelling technology to block outside noise?
Headphone sensitivity is measured in dB. The lower the figure, the more powerful the driving amplifier needs to be. Headphones for use on portables need to be of higher sensitivity than home hi-fi ones.
Impedance is measured in ohms and should be matched carefully to the driving amplifier for the best sound quality and reliability.
Frequency response is measured in Hz and gives an indication of how low and how high the headphones will go.

Open back headphones offer the most spacious sound but can leak sound, disturbing others. They also block less outside noise than closed back headphones
Closed back headphones block out more background noise than open back ones. They also leak less sound

Really good headphones.Bought these as a replacement for my Bayer Dynamics DTX 501p headphones. They are a bigger but still comfortable. The sound quality is very good as well from my stereo system with a good bass. Well made and with an adapter included.

Disappointing for me.Got the Y50's for my birthday after reading the What HiFi Awards. I was disappointed and I would have liked to have returned them.
First the good points:
the Y50s are well made and fold down to fit the pouch supplied, the detachable cable is a good idea. They look good. They look like a premium product.
Bad points: they are just not comfortable, I have owned many different brands however the Y50s are too uncomfortable for me. Then I might just be me, I would try them on before you buy. I also found that you need to turn the volume a bit higher than other headphones but the bass becomes too strong.
Overall well made, good looking and good value, but comfort and sound are not to my taste. Its a pity, but I cannot use them.

DisappointedI read quite a few reviews looking for the best headphones for under £100. These seemed to be the recommended product, and what I particularly liked was that that cable can easily be replaced if it becomes faulty which has just happened to my Graddo SR80e.
Sadly there is no comparison between the sound quality of these AKG Y50's and the Graddo SR80e. I'm no audiophile but there is no clarity to the bass, the whole sound experience seems muddied. Comparing the price of these with the Graddo SR80e (£89) you might think it is not surprising that the Graddo sound better, but I also think my old Sennheiser PX 100's (£36) sound better than the AKG Y50's.
The build quality of the AKG Y50 is good, and they are more comfortable than the Graddo at least, although they get warmer.

Excellent design and very good sound quality.I chose black for my headphones and was very pleased when I opened the package. They are very smart and are designed beautifully. A small adjustment to fit my head and I was off into music wonderland.
The sound quality is excellent allowing you to pick out individual instruments and the ear pieces comfortable. They do not let out sound so now I can wear them in bed without disturbing my wife.
