The legend continues
It was back in 1981 when the Wharfedale Diamond first redefined expectations of small speakers. The original model proved that a small speaker didn't necessarily need to sound 'small', that a budget speaker could sound full-bodied without being intrusive. The latest Diamond 220 follows on from the highly successful 121 model and has already received an excited response.
New cabinet for improved sound
New to the Wharfedale Diamond 220 is a sandwich cabinet design. Rather than the simple chipboard and MDF used by the previous Diamond 121, the new 220 uses particle board sandwiched by MDF on either side. This gives superb rigidity and damping properties, helping to further reduce the already low levels of distortion. A further benefit is the smooth MDF construction provides a cleaner surface for the veneer; meaning a smoother finish all round.
Ported design
Also new is the gloss finished baffle, making the speakers far more pleasing to the eye. As before, the 220 ports the bass via an integral plinth, rather than the more usual front or rear holes. This not only provides a more efficient and even bass output but also makes the speaker easier to place: you don't have to take wall positioning into account.
New drive units, class-leading sound
The bass driver is formed from woven Kevlar with ribs for added rigidity, but has a revised magnet system for tighter control of the sound. Vocals still sound incredibly realistic, and the bass is upbeat and never lags. At the other end of the scale the treble unit is surrounded by a deeply dished waveguide. This helps to improve the imaging and 'width' of sound, making it easier to pick out individual instruments, as well as providing loads of detail. Put together, the overall sound quality is still fantastically well-balanced.
With its latest upgrades the Wharfedale Diamond 220 has truly come of age. If ever there was an argument for evolution over revolution in speaker design, a listen to the Diamond 220 proves the case for the former - and then some!

Dull
Bought these speakers a month ago for £179.00
When set them up with my Denon amp I was dissatisfied with the sound, they have quite a dull and boxy sound very middy and not enough bass clarity
Just discover they are £80 cheaper today
Very upset with my purchase

Great sound
Brought as an upgrade to some diamond 9's and they offer a much better sound. They offer a great soundstage and arent too fussy on their placement within the room.

Wharfedale, Diamond 200 series
Buying experience was excellent. I was kept informed of the progress of my order and was even told the time they would be arriving on my doorstep. This is impressive. Not many companies can do that.
I was able to take advantage of a good offer from Richer Sounds. The speakers are of very good built quality. Perhaps a bit on the small size but this is not necessarily a drawback.
The speakers arrived well packed. I have not been able to connect them to my main (Pioneer) HiFi system but have tried them with an AIWA using (existing) old wires. Even under these conditions the sound was great. I would imagine, when I am able to set up my main system, the sound would be significantly better.
I have been a customer of RS for years (since I was a student!!!) and have always been satisfied with their service but also advice, etc. These people will respect that not all of us have thousands of pounds to spare. So, they try to point us towards value for money.

Great speakers for a budget price
Bought these speakers when I moved a Sony amp to my bedroom, primarily to beef up the TV sound. However, as I'm still working from home, working out of a spare bedroom I've converted, I find myself streaming Spotify or the radio through the amp and these speakers, and what a difference it has made to my overall working from home experience. The sound is rich and wholesome, and whilst not a surround set up (I'm getting another pair to do just that) the sound when watching TV in bed feels expansive, as if coming from somewhere other than the front. Great speakers, and a steal at this price (£99), with 6 years warranty...

Sound great, very good value at the sale price!
When I bought my Denon amp, these speakers were a recommended accessory, but at £179 I couldn't justify the extra cost, and stuck with my old Gale 3010S pair.
But at £99 they were a steal, and give a much better sound than my old Gales (which were OK with the Onkyo system I used to have).
Currently they are on shelves, but will put on stands once the room is re-decorated.
Highly recommended, especially at the current price!
