"Want to know what the best sounding budget speakers on the market are? Easy, its Wharfedales brand-new Diamond 220s." What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine, 5-star review.

The legend continues

It was back in 1981 when the Wharfedale Diamond first redefined expectations of small speakers. The original model proved that a small speaker didn't necessarily need to sound 'small', that a budget speaker could sound full-bodied without being intrusive. The latest Diamond 220 follows on from the highly successful 121 model and has already received an excited response.

New cabinet for improved sound
New to the Wharfedale Diamond 220 is a sandwich cabinet design. Rather than the simple chipboard and MDF used by the previous Diamond 121, the new 220 uses particle board sandwiched by MDF on either side. This gives superb rigidity and damping properties, helping to further reduce the already low levels of distortion. A further benefit is the smooth MDF construction provides a cleaner surface for the veneer; meaning a smoother finish all round.

Ported design
Also new is the gloss finished baffle, making the speakers far more pleasing to the eye. As before, the 220 ports the bass via an integral plinth, rather than the more usual front or rear holes. This not only provides a more efficient and even bass output but also makes the speaker easier to place: you don't have to take wall positioning into account.

New drive units, class-leading sound
The bass driver is formed from woven Kevlar with ribs for added rigidity, but has a revised magnet system for tighter control of the sound. Vocals still sound incredibly realistic, and the bass is upbeat and never lags. At the other end of the scale the treble unit is surrounded by a deeply dished waveguide. This helps to improve the imaging and 'width' of sound, making it easier to pick out individual instruments, as well as providing loads of detail. Put together, the overall sound quality is still fantastically well-balanced.

With its latest upgrades the Wharfedale Diamond 220 has truly come of age. If ever there was an argument for evolution over revolution in speaker design, a listen to the Diamond 220 proves the case for the former - and then some!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Dull Bought these speakers a month ago for £179.00 When set them up with my Denon amp I was dissatisfied with the sound, they have quite a dull and boxy sound very middy and not enough bass clarity Just discover they are £80 cheaper today Very upset with my purchase

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sound Brought as an upgrade to some diamond 9's and they offer a much better sound. They offer a great soundstage and arent too fussy on their placement within the room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wharfedale, Diamond 200 series Buying experience was excellent. I was kept informed of the progress of my order and was even told the time they would be arriving on my doorstep. This is impressive. Not many companies can do that. I was able to take advantage of a good offer from Richer Sounds. The speakers are of very good built quality. Perhaps a bit on the small size but this is not necessarily a drawback. The speakers arrived well packed. I have not been able to connect them to my main (Pioneer) HiFi system but have tried them with an AIWA using (existing) old wires. Even under these conditions the sound was great. I would imagine, when I am able to set up my main system, the sound would be significantly better. I have been a customer of RS for years (since I was a student!!!) and have always been satisfied with their service but also advice, etc. These people will respect that not all of us have thousands of pounds to spare. So, they try to point us towards value for money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great speakers for a budget price Bought these speakers when I moved a Sony amp to my bedroom, primarily to beef up the TV sound. However, as I'm still working from home, working out of a spare bedroom I've converted, I find myself streaming Spotify or the radio through the amp and these speakers, and what a difference it has made to my overall working from home experience. The sound is rich and wholesome, and whilst not a surround set up (I'm getting another pair to do just that) the sound when watching TV in bed feels expansive, as if coming from somewhere other than the front. Great speakers, and a steal at this price (£99), with 6 years warranty...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sound great, very good value at the sale price! When I bought my Denon amp, these speakers were a recommended accessory, but at £179 I couldn't justify the extra cost, and stuck with my old Gale 3010S pair. But at £99 they were a steal, and give a much better sound than my old Gales (which were OK with the Onkyo system I used to have). Currently they are on shelves, but will put on stands once the room is re-decorated. Highly recommended, especially at the current price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from punches above its weight/price - a knock out! these share much in common with marvin hagler, in that they're marvellous. they're not true heavyweights in terms of fit/finish and sound quality, but they're highly effective in their division and are a contender, especially at the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wharfedale Diamond 220 I already have purchased a set of the 230 speakers and they sound very rich and have excellent tone and base. I wanted some matching surround speaker and purchased a set of the 220's. Whilst these are small in size they produce a very rich sound for such a small speaker. For the money they are an excellent buy. I would not hesitate to recommend these speakers, when paired with my Denon AVR AMP

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cracking book shelf speakers! Purchased for a small room as book shelf speakers . Super sound, great bass and sweet treble, was a bit dubious especially at the reduced price but soon as a set them up I was blown away by how good they sounded! Look really good as well with the gloss finish front! Recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Service I'm showing my age! She who must be obeyed wanted the wires from my existing speakers removed so I thought 'A wireless system will do the trick' I didn't realsie that the second, slave speaker still needed wires so when the first speakers arrived - problem now solved. However, I'd decided - an independent thought!'- that the speakers did need improving so GREAT SERVICE FROM RICHER SOUND- they did a swap for a pair of great Wharfedale 220s. The exchange was completed within 24 hours and I also found some decent tape so that the speaker wires are not so obvious {no carpet so its cable on laminate]. She who must be obeyed it not totally happy, but I am. Wonderful sounds!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible bang for your buck! I have been curious about the Diamond 220's since they were released, especially with all the stellar reviews they were getting. I hadn't been planning to buy any speakers but these came up in a Richer Sounds flash sale for a crazy price and I couldn't resist them. As soon as you take them out of the box they have a pleasing heft to them. They are nicely finished too. The grilles pop off easily and, in my humble opinion, they look and sound better with them off. I have run them for a 5 or 6 hours now and they are starting 'run-in' nicely. The sound is mellowing out and the soundstage is opening up. Straight out of the box they do sound a bit 'Shouty' but they do start softening pretty quickly. If you are going to be using them as surround sound speakers then positioning etc. won't matter too much. For serious listening getting them a decent set of stands will help with the bass no end. I was amazed at just how much really deep bass they can produce when given the opportunity and there's bags of detail on offer too. I'm hearing things in recordings I've never heard before. They definitely sound better bi-wired. I have tried them both ways and there is an immediate improvement once they have been bi-wired. At very least I would reccomend taking the metal links out of the binding posts and using jumpers instead. I have been absolutely blown away by how good these sound from a price perspective. There is a lot of competition in the budget speaker market but if you are looking for a small, great sounding, cheap speaker, then defintiely add these to your audition list.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great next step Got these as a small next set up pair of speakers, have to say so far over the moon with them. Had a set of Tannoy bookshelf and wasn't really sure if for a bit extra I could get what I wanted and have been holding off for a couple of months. These little beauties popped up on an offer that I could not resist. Sounds lovely we'll ballanced and much clearer. Do Like the base output at the bottom as it spreads it out more, it's not as heavy as my old pair which I like as I found my old speakers were a bit to thumpy for my hifi setup. Very much recommend for sound, look and price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weak Bought these 3 months ago - Worked fairly well until both tweeters died for no reason..I've had many other Wharfedale speakers over the years, including from the Diamond range and the old Modus range..No issue with any of them being put thru their paces at fairly low volume levels..These 220's were only plugged into a teac ag790 amp & used for use with TV..Half way thru Emmerdale lol, they just stopped working.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Capable little speakers if spaced is limited I bought these after we revamped our lounge and my floorstanders were unceremoniously banished by Management. I've mounted them on brackets on the wall. They aren't run-in yet so I won't say anything critical, but I will say they appear to be able to go plenty loud enough without losing all control. Don't expect them to sound like Linn Majiks and you'll be fine !
