The Yamaha MusicCast 20 is part of Yamaha's hugely impressive network audio system, MusicCast. With MusicCast you can control all your compatible Yamaha MusicCast products via your smartphone or tablet. Nice but horrible lag with analogue sources
I bought this speaker to connect to an existing musicast system (R-N602 receiver) that we had in another room, for seamless listening whilst in the kitchen. I also hoped this would 'futureproof' our system as the receiver is not on the list of devices that will be supported by a fix for BBC Sounds... But that's another issue!
Good points - easy set up, quality feeling device that was reassuringly heavy and solid. Connected very easily and after initial teething problems not getting audio, I could play Spotify, Bluetooth and radio between rooms totally fine.
Bad points - unlistenable lag with analogue sources. I really wanted to be able to listen to records and CDs in the kitchen instead of just turning up the volume to max and deafening everyone. Sadly there was a massive (1-2 second) lag from both my turntable (fairly budget Teac TN175) and CD player (also fairly budget Tibo TI435CDP) that are connected to the receiver. A few web searches showed that I was not the only one, and I tried a few fixes but nothing worked. Perhaps a Bluetooth or Yamaha turntable would work... but I wasn't prepared to invest further with Yamaha to try it.
Richer Sounds customer services were initially a bit dismissive and told me just to check online or call Yamaha for advice, but after I explained I had done this they were helpful and arranged a return.
Overall incredibly disappointed that I couldn't get this to work. Proceed with caution if you want to use it for analogue listening. Otherwise a nice little speaker.
We'll just be upgrading our main speakers now and wiring the old bookshelf ones into the kitchen!
(Last observation - we have had sonos for decades and moved to Yamaha a few years ago once our gen 1 devices weren't supported. We still run some working sonos devices in parallel and so I could compare this with a Sonos 1 (older model). No contest on sound quality - Sonos 1 is a lot beefier volume-wise and has a lot more depth of sound. It's also smaller and lighter.

Great sound, shame about the temporary BBC hitch
Great but now waiting for the BBC update. Yamaha have announced that this is one of the devices that WILL be upgraded to the new DASH/HLS requirement of the BBC streaming services, but until 'Summer 2023' (their words) this will not natively play BBC net radio without being tied to your phone, except World Service.

It's a mono device, but fine for small rooms!
Gives Sonos a run for its money at a huge saving. Sounds great for a mono device, ideal for the smaller room or occasional use. Yamaha MusicCast is excellent and offers a huge range of device types to choose from, though sadly some discontinued. The only bugbear is waiting for an update for BBC net streaming...

Amazing speaker - great sound!
I bought this as an add on to the yamaha speakers we have in the livingroom. We can now listen to the music in the kitchen whilst still using the amp through the Yamaha App which is very user friendly. The sound is so clear, its amazing!

Really pleased with these!
Bought two of these speakers to set up as stereo and to replace an older musiccast speaker (WX-030) in our dining room and I feel the sound is definitely an improvement. Also the Bluetooth and airplay seems to be more stable which makes sense as it’s a newer product. If you are looking to add to your musiccast system, I highly recommend these speakers.

Yamaha MusicCast speaker
I have quite a few Yamaha hifi separates with the MusicCast system and decided to try a wireless MusicCast speaker it has proved to be absolutely brilliant! The quality of the speaker is second to none with awesome sound and a fantastic contemporary look. I shall definitely be investing in more Yamaha MusicCast speakers. Highly recommended.
