"Want to know what the best sounding budget speakers on the market are? Easy, its Wharfedales brand-new Diamond 220s." What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine, 5-star review.

The legend continues

It was back in 1981 when the Wharfedale Diamond first redefined expectations of small speakers. The original model proved that a small speaker didn't necessarily need to sound 'small', that a budget speaker could sound full-bodied without being intrusive. The latest Diamond 220 follows on from the highly successful 121 model and has already received an excited response.

New cabinet for improved sound
New to the Wharfedale Diamond 220 is a sandwich cabinet design. Rather than the simple chipboard and MDF used by the previous Diamond 121, the new 220 uses particle board sandwiched by MDF on either side. This gives superb rigidity and damping properties, helping to further reduce the already low levels of distortion. A further benefit is the smooth MDF construction provides a cleaner surface for the veneer; meaning a smoother finish all round.

Ported design
Also new is the gloss finished baffle, making the speakers far more pleasing to the eye. As before, the 220 ports the bass via an integral plinth, rather than the more usual front or rear holes. This not only provides a more efficient and even bass output but also makes the speaker easier to place: you don't have to take wall positioning into account.

New drive units, class-leading sound
The bass driver is formed from woven Kevlar with ribs for added rigidity, but has a revised magnet system for tighter control of the sound. Vocals still sound incredibly realistic, and the bass is upbeat and never lags. At the other end of the scale the treble unit is surrounded by a deeply dished waveguide. This helps to improve the imaging and 'width' of sound, making it easier to pick out individual instruments, as well as providing loads of detail. Put together, the overall sound quality is still fantastically well-balanced.

With its latest upgrades the Wharfedale Diamond 220 has truly come of age. If ever there was an argument for evolution over revolution in speaker design, a listen to the Diamond 220 proves the case for the former - and then some!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Top speakers These speakers replaced my ageing mission 760i's which I've had for over 25 years! Fab speakers in their day. I went for the 220s based on the 5 star review on 'what hifi'. Surprised to find they were a little bigger than my old speakers as wharfdale diamonds have previously been small. Initially not blown away by the sound but then tried different genres and quickly realised how well rounded they are. I was hearing detail in songs. Good strong bass too. Now it's been 2 weeks and they continue to impress. For £119, superb value upgrade

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, great price! Replacement speakers, they have exceeded expectations. Not expensive but perfect for the room and are well made and easy to set up. My vinyl collection is re-born!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good sound from a compact speaker A good, crisp sound but not the clarity or depth that my Mission 700-2s still deliver after about 40 years' use. But may be that is an unfair comparison as I assume their modern equivalent would be quite a bit more expensive than these Wharfedales. Overall I'm pleased with them, they do the job I ask of them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound Replacement for JPW monitors bought from richer sounds over 20 years ago. Fantastic product, loving the great sound. Will definitely be shopping with richer sounds again soon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bargain This seemed one of those chances to buy a better previous model at a bargain price given Luke warm reviews on its predecessor the 11.1. They seem happier with digital sources (streaming, CD, Blu-ray) and a little dull with vinyl. That of course can point to deficiency in the turntable, cartridge or phono stage. Linn Axis, Akita, Goldring G3 and Marantz PM6005. Use of the loudness button plus subtle EQ matches it up well however and now I can appreciate the full quality of these speakers across all sources. They are simply addictive and Wouldn’t swap them in my conservatory system. Magic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great substitute I bought these as my Proac Studio Towers are being repaired with no idea of a return date due to Covid 19. They look strange on the end a Chord / Alphason turntable / Hugo / Teac Esoteric system but they sound very good albeit I have to be careful not to use on full gain! Well made for the money and image really well....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sound ! I’m really pleased . My speakers have replaced some old skool Kenwood speakers from the 80’s What a difference. Superb!
