Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 (Black)
Speakers Per Pair
£49 RRP £59
Speaker legends don't get much bigger than the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0.
The original small hi-fi speaker
It's hard to believe that the original Wharfedale Diamond is now past its thirtieth birthday. All those decades ago, it was the Diamond speaker that proved, for the first time, that excellent quality sound could be achieved from a small, budget speaker. Since then there have been dozens of imitators, but the Diamonds remain amongst the best available.
The cabinet isn't just compact, it's also very solid. This combination gives the Diamonds an extremely accurate sound quality as the cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate. Equally impressive are the drive units. A soft dome tweeter gives the clarity and smoothness of sound you'd expect from a more expensive speaker, while the woofer cone uses a carbon fibre type weave to offer extremely taut and responsive bass.
With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.
It's not just the major aspects of the design that Wharfedale have got right, it's the details, too. Proper 4mm banana sockets will accept thick cable and offer the best type of connection. Threaded sockets at the rear make for secure and easy bracket attachment.
At their original launch price of £100 these speakers were clearly market leaders. Now we're offering them at this bargain price, the Diamond 9.0 speakers are a gem of a deal!
Rated 1 out of 5 by TPTH from Absolute rubbish Hot highs. Muddy mids. No base (why the mids sound muddy). They still claim to be made in britain, they are not. I know Wharfedale are now chinese owned, but expected original British quality. You would be better off getting some trust PC speakers. Ive put my mission 761's back, sound so much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tony Pee from Excellent replacement for my outdated speakers. I bought these to replace my bookend speakers in the living room that I had off my daughter when she was in her teens and she is now thirty three, so no wonder they gave up the ghost, for such a small speaker I am so pleased with the sharp sound quality and there is a massive difference. A little disappointed that I ordered them on the Monday and when I went on to make a review on Thursday, the price had been lowered, C,est a Vie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dan77Mac from Fabulous! I have 2 pairs of Diamond 9.0’s, both purchased from the brilliant guys at RS Cheltenham, over a year ago. To get the best from these “pocket rockets” spend a few extra pounds on a good quality speaker cable. The sound quality is also significantly improved if you can leave at least 1’ (30cm) space from the sides and rear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SmellySpelly from Little crackers! I bought these to upgrade my daughter's modest bedroom system but have stolen them and put them in my room! Punchy little speakers with good clarity and very reasonable bass for their size. Possibly the best £50 I've ever spent on hi-fi

Rated 5 out of 5 by Warren Raye from Spectacular little speakers I've owned several pairs of these speakers over the years. An old design (circa 2007) but 100% reliable.Have used them as primary left-right speakers hooked up to various stereo amps BUT also as surround speakers when hooked up to an AV receiver. For the price, you can't go wrong with these in a simple system.

Rated 3 out of 5 by DanB3000 from Muddy sounding and unbalanced I've tried these in a couple of rooms with three very different amps. For the price I wasn't expecting much, but these sound dull and muddled compared to new expensive (Tannoy DC6T) and old cheap (JPW mini monitors) speakers. Possibly OK for surround sound use, but I'd be worried by lack of clarity for speech.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Si16 from Great choice I decided to set up a home cinema and thought I would take a chance on the Diamond 9.0s for my rear surrounds. I must admit I wasn't expecting anything fantastic for the money I paid for them but I have been more than pleased with them. I have no doubt there are better sounding speakers that cost a lot more, but I can honestly say these have more than exceeded my expectations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Eddie G from Amazing sound for such a cheap small speaker Bought these in Plymouth Branch today as speakers for a second system in my dining room. To say I'm amazed by the quality of the sound is an understatement, the bass is surprisingly low for such a small enclosure and the treble is not over bright and they go loud. Not the least fatiguing for long listening sessions unlike some small speakers can be. At the price these have to be one of the best Hi-Fi bargains around. Would not hesitate to recommend these speakers to anybody looking for a cheap pair for a second system or even a starter system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Marty1234 from Surprisingly big sound with wide sound stage I bought these for a small technics micro system and I was surprised how big they sounded for a small speaker. Punchy bass and great treble not over bearing. Good timing. Well made for 39 pounds you cannot go wrong with these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Johnspud from Sounds like a proper speaker I picked up a pair of these from the Kingston store where Daniel and Sunil opened the door after 6pm after I had reserved them at the unbeatable price of £39! Got them home for my Brennan B2 (which RS used to sell) and they are perfect and sound like floorstanders many times the price. A long time fan of RS since the late 1970’s. Never disappointed in all the decades since. Looking forward to a visit from Dave (Guildford) to connect my B2 to my surround sound system. I’m disabled and find the after sales service extremely useful. Thanks guys you have literally changed my life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by jnd_kent from Good grief! £39 for hifi speakers.... I am rarely lost for words but these are astonishing. Paired with a decade old "entry" Denon micro hifi (30RMS per channel?), I am listening to a Luther van Dross CD with the tone set to "neutral" and volume @ 25 out of 40 (=max) in a 4x5 metre living room with plenty of sound absorbing furnishings. Separation of sounds is amazing. Bass, mid-range and top end all great. Some have said there is a lack of bass but if I go to Bass +4db it is too much for me. The front port is a great feature. However, push the amp to vol 30/40 and they start to suffer but then this too loud for me anyway - note they are not yet "run in". If you like loud punchy music, perhaps look for something bigger?

Rated 5 out of 5 by TrickyTrevor from Great sound for the price and size. I bought these for use with an Onkyo CD515DAB mini hifi for use in my study. The first thing to bare in mind is that they are probably a little smaller than you'd expect! The drivers are a mere 4". The general build and presentation is very good and very classic looking. Don't get me wrong, the bass and general presence will not knock your socks off, so I'd not use them in a big room, but for a mini hifi in a study they are superb! The sound is very "monitor" like in that it's neutral. If driven directly with all the bypass switches active on the Onkyo the sound is very natural. You really get the feeling of hearing the music exactly as meant. If you like Apple earbuds, you'll like these. For the price point as well I think you'd be hard pressed to beat them. Go on - you know you want a set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from The best £39 you will ever spend!! Picked these up last week at the Edinburgh store to use as computer speakers attached to a Samson Servo 120a power amp. For this price i wasn't expecting much but these actually sound great with a powerful beefy sound that makes a mockery of their size and price. They won't fill a large room with sound but are great as nearfield monitors. Best bargain in hi-fi at the moment!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by tuc1961 from Beautiful sounding speakers. I own a 7 year old onkyo all in a box home theatre system just lately the sound seemed to be lacking something.i put it down to the age and hard use the small satellite speakers have had. I am disabled and shop online spotting these wharefdale 9.0s on the richer sounds website I went in for the plunge. One phone call to richer sounds Middlesbrough store and my 2 pairs of wharfedales were kindly ordered for me.a few days later I received a courtesy call for my wife to pop through and collect them.wow what a transformation they have made my amp now sounds like a high end system.im hearing things on my 4k Blu-ray's I'd never heard before. Clean high end and not overly deep mid and bottom end .I would highly recommend these speakers it's transformed my home theatre for less than £ 80 with a 6 year warranty included . thanks again richer sounds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by davo1983 from Amazing Sound, Value And Quality. Purchased as a package deal with a mini system. Intended to use these temporarily while saving for better speakers but will be keeping these now! Had low expectations based on the size and price. After wiring them up with some fairly cheap Symphony 300 cable I was blown away by the sound quality. They have a broad soundstage and no lack of.low end bass for their size. Using them in a small 2m x 3m bedroom along with an Acoustic Energy 108 subwoofer. They will obviously at struggle in bigger rooms and don't give floor shaking bass. They do however sound great for their size and are outstanding considering they cost £39.99

Rated 5 out of 5 by Kenp1 from Absolute bargain Bought these with a Denon DM41DAB mini system. They're great for my small office/TV/music room at home. I didn't have room for massive speakers and I've been very surprised by the sound quality, they're detailed and powerful for their size. Obviously you can get better speakers, but for £39 you won't get anything this good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tarx from Unbeatable at the price. Bought a pair of these for my son along with the Denon dm39 one box system. 6 yrs on still going strong and with the power to astonish even now. These are fast, dynamic, crisp, very clear and utterly without the hardness or fatiguing edge that usually accompanies these characteristics. So much so, that listening recently with a view to upgrading, I realised there really was no need. Nothing whatsoever wrong with that system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by mjc100 from Never judge a pair of speakers by their price!! A pair of speakers for £40.00, well, I thought, they will be O.K. for a starter system, how wrong can you be. Detailed and Powerful are just two of the phrases that can be applied to these speakers. If you get a chance, listen to them, you will NOT be disappointed.
