Adaptive sound courtesy of Surround:AI
Surround:AI gives the ultimate surround sound – scene by scene. Powerful processing from the DSP (Digital Sound Processor) analyses scenes in real time and then adjusts the surround effect in real time. By focusing on distinct sounds, such as dialogue, background music and sound effects, the RX-A4A automatically optimises the sound for incredible realism.
This Aventage AV receiver boasts exceptional construction quality. Anti-Resonance Technology (ART) makes this AVR exceptionally resistant to mechanical and electrical interference. ART encompasses a more rigid, H-cross chassis, anti-vibration construction and even a fifth damping foot, helping give the RX-A4A its superb detail and resolution. With a power upgrade to 110 watts (at 8 ohms), the RXA4A is powerful enough for larger rooms and all speaker types.
High Slew Rate Amplifier for dynamic sound
High Slew Rate amplifiers are difficult to implement, but when engineered with Yamaha’s usual thoroughness, achieve superb results. Especially suitable for Hi-res audio sources, the RX-A4A’s amp provides a crisp, dynamic sound.
High quality digital components
It’s not just the mechanical side of the RX-A4A that has received Yamaha’s attention, the digital components are also of exceptional quality. The Qualcomm QCS407 system chips offers industry-leading compatibility, digital signal processing and seamless integration. Partnering this is the SABRE ES9007S premium DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertors). This offers exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratios, giving you ultra-low levels of distortion and crystal-clear sound – even at low volume levels.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for three-dimensional sound
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X use ceiling or up-firing speakers for three-dimensional and fully immersive sound. Whether it’s rain falling in a tropical jungle or the intense sound of overhead gunfire, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X put you in the centre of the action. DTS Neural:X offers an even more immersive sound, with a heightened sense of realism.
Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization for extra height, without the speakers*
As impressive as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound, it’s not always possible to accommodate the extra speakers. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization technology goes some way to help. Play any Dolby format and enjoy a more immersive sound with virtual height enhancement – using your existing speakers to deliver an enhanced sound. *via firmware update.
Connect more – including a turntable
As well as seven HDMI inputs, this Yamaha AVR also has a wide range of other AV connectivity. Optical coaxial digital inputs are ideal for connecting older devices or upgrading the sound from a compatible CD/Network player. Three analogue inputs are perfect for Hi-Fi components, with the dedicated MM phono input perfect for plugging in a turntable. The Zone 2 output gives you the option of adding a second pair of speakers in another room.
Three HDMI outputs
Paired with the HDMI inputs, the RX-A4A boasts no fewer than three HDMI outputs. This lets you connect a TV and projector in your main room and a second TV in another room.
Compatible with the next generation of high resolution – 8K*
Featuring a trio of 8K compliant HDMI inputs and matching output, this Yamaha AVR is ready for the next generation of TV. If you’ve not yet made the jump to 8K TV, the sockets also handles up to 4K/120Hz signals, for the highest quality pass through. Upscaling to UHD 4K is also standard. *via firmware update.
Supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+*
The RX-A4A supports a wide range of High Dynamic Range video formats. These include Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. It also supports HDR10+, which enhances picture realism by sending dynamic Meta data to your TV. *via firmware update.
The latest HDMI support also marks a big improvement in gaming. 4K/120Hz and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support maximise resolution and clarity. Quick Frame Transport (QFT) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) help eliminate lag and frame tearing, giving you a smoother, more responsive gaming experience. *via firmware update.
Surround sound, untied
For an easy way to reduce cabling, the RX-A4A offers the option of wireless rear speakers. Combine this receiver with the Yamaha MusicCast 20 or MusicCast 50 speakers and you can leave aside speaker cable connections. Perfect if you have a solid floor and struggle to hide speaker cable or if you simply want a cleaner style, wireless surround speakers cut down on the clutter.
MusicCast for music all around your home
The Yamaha RX-A4A is part of Yamaha's hugely impressive network audio system, MusicCast. With MusicCast you control all your compatible Yamaha MusicCast products via your smartphone or even Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant by voice*. Play the same music on all the components or split the sound into different zones for different moods in each room; the choice is yours. The MusicCast CONTROLLER app lets you operate the system around your home and change settings quickly and easily. *requires third party Alexa or Google device.
Stream the best music services
Compatible with Amazon Music, Spotify Premium, Pandora, Napster, Tidal, Deezer and Qobuz, the RX-A4A is fully equipped for your favourite music streaming service. With Tidal and Qobuz already offering higher resolution playback, it’s now possible to find a streaming service that at least matches the quality of CD and, in some cases, even improves upon it.
Advanced networking including Apple AirPlay and Bluetooth
As well as MusicCast, the RX-A4A is also compatible with Apple AirPlay 2, letting you stream music from your Apple iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad or other compatible Apple device, wirelessly, around your home. Just ask Siri where you want the music to play. For a quick and easy connection with your smartphone, use the Bluetooth connection for easy music streaming.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Singlehurst from excellent (it will be) the AVR is great a step up from my previous model. the 2 reasons why i bought the Yamaha rx A4A are : Xbox series X and PS5. Every HDMI port on this unit pending a firm ware update will support support 4k at 120hz with Dolby Vision and Atmos plus several other features including VRR. most of the other receivers only had 1 or 2 HDMI 2.1 ports and a few have a bug so they wont support the features above. At the time of writing this, the firmware update hasn't been released but from what i could find out online - its due end of February 2022.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from You get what you pay for I'm no expert, but Ive been playing with Hifi and home Cinema for a long time now so at the very least I can compare against previous kit and what I like. Typically my price bracket has been the 500 - 600 AVs from Onkyo and Denon but this time I decided to step-up. Right of the bat the build quality is there, clean interface and no mess setup. The key take away for sound from this Yamaha is that it is more dynamic, more true. Big stuff sounds tight and controlled and delicate things are clean and never lost. Compared to previous systems this is a more uplifting and energetic sound. Worth what I paid for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Bugsy1550 from Excellent Amp Very easy to setup and impressed with the multi position and height auto calibration. I have speakers set to 7.2.2 and the amp easily fills the room and is very accurate in sound placement. I have played numerous sources including Dolby Atmos 4k which it handles with ease. The video quality is excellent with either pass through or processed. All in all very impressed with the amp especially at the price point!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by D Riley1968 from Worth the wait !! Fantastic sounding AV. I’ve just upgraded to this Yamaha RXA-4A and it’s been well worth the wait. Only had it a week but I’ve been amazed by the all round performance and would not hesitate in recommending this AV. I primarily use it for music, which was the most important thing for me in choosing this Yamaha. 2 channel pure audio is my preferred listening choice. Tidal sounds fantastic. Apple Music and Amazon music are also really clear as you would expect. CD’s via my Cambridge Audio CXC and Vinyl via my Project Audio 3a are particularly good with fantastic separation of instruments and clear vocals. For the movie buffs, I have mine set up as a 7.1 with 3 front and 4 rear speakers. I tested it with the opening scenes to the James Bond Blu-ray, Spectre, in Mexico City. (DTS:X) The building collapse was very impressive and the soundstage really gave the feel that my living room was shaking ! The following helicopter scenes were also most impressive with the helicopter flying around my room from speaker to speaker, giving an authentic cinematic experience. After the above tests, I wanted to incorporate my Cyrus Three (for it’s CD player) in to the AV, via the front pre outs. I struggled to get the Yamaha to recognise the Cyrus and for some reason the Cyrus was not happy and I couldn’t get this running through the AV, to my front left and right Focal Aria 926 speakers. I called my Richer Sounds in Stockport and we agreed for me to take my new AV and also my Cyrus into them on the same day. They had some Covid staff shortages that day, but Mike, one of the Service Directors was extremely helpful. He was only covering that day but he did me proud. He set up my kit in the demo room and within 10 or 15 minutes he had my Cyrus CD player running through the Yamaha RXA-4A and the sound was incredible. It was in the Cyrus settings and not the Yamaha, so no issue for the purpose of this Yamaha review. I have been using Richer Sounds in Stockport for years and they really do look after you. To summarise, this is a fantastic all round AV receiver and is great for music as well as movies. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this Yamaha RXA-4A. And it’s future proof too as it’s 8k ready via a firmware update due in the first half of this year. Just need to test the Atmos now - but that will have to wait until my next Richer trip, when I’ve got a few more pennies for some front height atmos speakers !

Rated 4 out of 5 by oldrichersound from Menu hard to get going with. Audio excellent This AVR replaced the good value Sony 1008. Sound is much more open & good for dialogue on DVDs. Drives speakers easily. Never got ARC to work correctly, but never did with the previous model. Suspect the TV (a Sony). Spotify app.works well. Still learning!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Cliveflint from Capable amp I’ve had this amp a couple of weeks and have checked out most of the settings. You can adjust it easily via a webpage which is far easier than using the remote control. Go to http://ipAdress/setup for the advanced menu. (Where ipAddress is the address on your network.) The Atmos seems to be working well. Very happy with it. One issue is it’s quite tall and wouldn’t fit on my top shelf.
