"Best stereo amplifier up to £500, Awards 2010. Yamaha cracks the budget stereo amp nut: a stunningly capable product"

Yamaha have spent a good deal of time ensuring that the A-S500 is one of the best sounding amplifiers in its class. First of all, they've separated the power supplies for the iPod dock from the main amplifier. This is to the benefit of both amplifier and iPod sound quality. Added to this, Yamaha have used a reinforced casing with substantial anti-vibration methods for a purer, more precise sound quality. Finally, a large power supply with dual heat sinks ensures that the AS500 can produce a punchy and dynamic sound without the risk of overheating. Put together, these features give the powerful, 85 watt Yamaha a majestic sound quality with the scale and range of a much more expensive amp. Detail and precision is pretty impressive, too.

Class-leading sound quality is one thing, but where the Yamaha A-S500 really scores is in combining this with an equally impressive range of features. In terms of inputs, the AS500 has a separate iPod dock, two recording loops and a phono input for your turntable. More unusually in a stereo amplifier, there's also a subwoofer output. There are two sets of, separately switched, speaker sockets and a headphone output. A remote control that will also operate other Yamaha devices is included, too. An independent record output and a tone bypass for purer sound quality complete the spec.

Finished in Yamaha's retro yet timeless A-S design, the A-S500 is not only built to last but built to look good for years to come.

With good looks, class-leading sound quality and features, the Yamaha A-S500 has got it all!

Rated 5 out of 5†by Cracking bit of kit My old Arcam Alpha 7 was struggling to drive some new floorstanders without overheating, so this was a choice based on power output, reviews and price. Really surprised with the additional clarity that the amp delivers over my old one - you can hear things in the music you couldn't previously, so a definite improvement in sound quality. 06 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5†by well worth buying I have only had this Yamaha AS 500 Amp for a couple of days but myself and my wife were amazed with the sound straight out of the box. Bought it because my 20 year old trusty Kenwood Amp was struggling on one channel so it had to go. Nothing about the sound produced is overbearing it's a very relaxed detailed, likable listen. It manages to put everything in the right place, and the remote is a nice extra for the couch potatoes among us, me included. There are better Amps out there, but at a few pence less than £180, I doubt it at this price point, it's a steal at that price., I bought it on the strength of the reviews that I have read plus awards that it had won, plus also, on the advice of the guys at Richer Sounds and they appear to have steered me in the right direction, cheers guys. It's not the best looker, it's more functional and it is the sound produced that's the important thing. Music is once again alive and well and living in our house. Definitely recommended. 01 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5†by a rich clean sound Pleased with amp so far but only used with old jbl xl300 speakers. Much to my annoyance a day later Richer sounds were advertising this item for £20 cheaper. 27 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5†by Excellent powerful amp Bought as my ageing Marantz pm66 ki amp was sounding rough and then lost one channel so needed a new amp. I have tried other budget amps under £500.00 inc a Marantz pm6004 and a Cambridge audio 650a and neither could compete with my pm66 ki so kept it until now amp finally had it, so bought this Yamaha as500 to see if it was any good.....well I have to say it really has surprised me the sound is very clean precise neutral and very easy to listen to, it is more powerful than expected more than any of the other amps I have tried. Yamaha seem to have put all the money in the right place under the hood where it counts, sound is much better than the price would suggest, the knobs and buttons feel plasticky but that's where the moneys been saved fine by me I don't listen to knobs and buttons.... in summary if you want a budget amp for under £500.00 buy the Yamaha it will surprise you like it did me. 14 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5†by Excellent budget amp Lovely bright sound from this budget amp. recommended by what hifi and i can hear why, and with Richer Sounds price can't be beat. 13 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5†by Great sound and quality product. Bought as a replacement for a 22 year old Yamaha amp (AX 440). Coupled with a Yamaha cd player and Panasonic tv this delivers a tight controlled sound with great definition. At this price you can't go wrong. 11 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5†by Great audio at such a low price. I can wholeheartedly recommend this Yamaha AS500 amplifier which was bought as a replacement for my ageing Pioneer A400. You can colour the sound to suit your ears or press a a button marked "Pure Direct" to by-pass the bass, treble and loudness controls. For an amplifier that cost me under £200 the detail and handling of music is outstanding. Another interesting feature is that whilst you can connect two sets of speakers or indeed bi-wire one pair, you can plug in headphones with the option of physically switching off the speakers. When used with quality headphones the detail that this amplifier achieves is stunning. It has been rather like rediscovering my music collection. Most other reviews invite you to buy this amplifier, and so do I. 24 July 2014
