The Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus does the seemingly impossible and improves upon a legend!

With a raft of improvements the Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus is still the best way of improving the sound from your hi-fi, AV system, PC, laptop and now, even your headphones!

The purpose behind the DacMagic Plus is simple: to make your music sound better, whatever the digital source. For this reason, the DacMagic Plus is now attuned to more of your music sources than ever. As before, you can plug in your Blu-ray, DVD or CD player via optical or coaxial connections (there are two of each) and enjoy up-sampled music quality that's ahead of what you'd expect from CD. The USB connection for your computer is still there but on the latest DacMagic it now supports 24-bit transfer for "better than CD quality". This means that music files stored on your PC or laptop in top 24/192 quality can be streamed, uncompressed, through the DacMagic Plus and enhanced by its Digital to Analogue Conversion.

One of the most exciting features about the Plus model is the option of being able to stream music from your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. With the optional BT100 audio receiver connected, simply link up via high quality apt-X or standard Bluetooth and stream your stored or streaming tunes from your device to the DacMagic and on into your hi-fi. At last, convenience meets quality!

In this respect, the DacMagic Plus starts spectacularly well with highest quality digital circuitry possible at its price. Twin Wolfson WM8740 DACs, implemented in a dual differential mode are complemented by a new Anagram Technologies AFT2 24 bit/384 kHz up-sampling circuit. Up-sampling conventional CD "stretches" the format to give the highest resolution possible. It also aids standard 24-bit/192kHz recordings with a faster sampling rate for less jitter.

Up-sampling sound gives a smoother, more relaxed sound quality with added detail. You'll also notice enhanced depth of sound and a more natural quality without the "edge" that can afflict digital music. You'll hear every detail, including the odd cough, squeaky chair and flutter of sheet music; in short, it's like being there for real!

Not content with producing the best sounding DAC in its class, Cambridge Audio have added a few extras that make the Plus so much more than just a DAC. First off, the DacMagic Plus comes with a dedicated headphone amp and volume control. Much higher quality than a standard headphone socket, this is truly the way to go for fans of cans. More revealing, more dynamic and with less noise, the headphone output gives your cans a whole new lease of life. In addition to this, the DacMagic Plus comes with a new digital pre-amp function. Combined with the volume control you can now connect directly to active speakers or a power amp for a shorter signal path and superior sound quality.

With more features than ever but the same performance boosting appeal, the DacMagic Plus is more than magic, it's magic plus!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Mixed Package I bought this based on the advice that this would be the future of music and would also make a good upgrade for an ageing CD Player (Arcam Alpha 7SE) so i took a gamble seen as the CD player i wanted was not in stock. For all digital media no matter what format or quality this DAC does a great job of improving the sound of the music to at least CD level, its a night and day difference with lower quality mps and spotify, however as old as my Arcam 7SE is, to my ears the arcam was still better, and at best hard to tell the difference, but i still found myself going back to the arcam. So if you want to go 100% digital, then i would recommend this, however if you want to improve you cd playback then i would not, but to be fair you would have to half decent player to start 05 February 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great sounding DAC at bargain price, I bought this for my son who is a musician with extensive performance and recording experience. He's really happy with this little DAC. He uses it to monitor and mix recordings made in Logic 10 as well as to listen to music for general pleasure. He tells me that through the Dacmagic + he hears far more detail than he could hear previously. (Not good for me as he was using my Audiolab M-DAC!) The Dacmagic Plus sounds really great driven by iTunes from a MacMini through his active Dynaudio studio monitors, and via AKG 702 studio headphones. 28 December 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic upgrade to my PC I previously listened to the music output through Onboard sound via the 3.5mm jack on my PC. Switching between Onboard and the optical out to this DAC is night and day difference wise, a vast improvement meaning my PC now equals most dedicated music devices such as a cd deck. 15 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lovely looking DAC. easy to set up. Does everything that the ad blurb claims, although I wouldn't say that the sound is better than a CD, but it's definitely just as good. Well worth buying if you spend a lot of time listening to music from a digital source or logging on to the likes of Spotify. Only word of warning I have is that the USB cable supplied is only about 18 inches long, which was not much use for stretching round my amplifier and then hooking up to a laptop. 07 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Exceptional clarity and connectivity The DacMagi Plus sound quality has to be heard to be believed. I didn't audition this in store, if I had I would have bought one there and then. Internet radio streams through your system in brilliant stereo detail. Your tracks from your on line library ooze with quality. With regards to smartphones ect the DacMagic Plus is a small part in your Hi-Fi chain to achieve a great sound (Aptx device/speakers /room/cables ect ) but has the flexibility for any system. Its default setting is Pre amp mode but just because you haven't a power amp doesn't mean you miss out.You can set it to fixed line-level output for direct connection to your integrated amp input, and it's done by holding the volume button down whilst pressing the power button on. Blue LEDs let you know what status it's in. You can connect direct to your computer for your I-tunes/Google music via USB, it's headphone socket balance L and R can adjusted by holding down the filter button and rotating the volume control. 20 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by More dynamic sound than Audiolab M-Dac I owned one of these but couldn't get the BT 100 to work so returned it for a refund. I then auditioned the highly praised Audiolab (big fan, have 2 Audiolab amps) and the Rega Dac, both excellent products but neither to my ears any better and both more expensive. I would love to buy another Dac Magic Plus, just waiting for a reply direct from Cambridge Audio on the BT 100 issue. Staff at Richersounds in Guildford are superb! 27 July 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by First Class DAC - don't be taken in by some of the audiophile hype A really first class converter - gives excellent stereo imaging and first class playback quality - even via the usb. Particularly impressive when switched to USB II and playing out from a macintosh computer although I'm sure a windows PC would work equally well. Really very good value for money when compared with DACs two or three times the price. 19 May 2013
