Featuring Samsung's highly reviewed Smart Hub, the Samsung UE40d5520 is a better connected TV.

Samsung were one of the first manufacturers to offer LED backlight screens and have now made it more widely available through their range. Key advantages to LED screens are slimmer depth and higher contrast. It can come as no surprise, then, to find the UE40d5520 has one of the best pictures in its class. Samsung has combined a number of technologies to make the UE40d5520 a class leader. In addition to the LED screen with its Mega Contrast ratio is Samsung's Wide Colour Enhancer Plus engine. This unique Samsung system is driven by Samsung's HyperReal picture Engine and offers far more natural and convincing colours by strengthening the red, green and blues. Also standard is Clear Rate Motion 100. Although this isn't the same as 100Hz processing, it does claim to offer gains in motion clarity through measuring the chipset, TV panel and backlight. What is certain is that the UE40d5520 offers smooth motion free from the blur of some of its 50Hz rivals.

With a TV of this size you really want to get a separate AV sound system to match the picture. If this is not possible, though, you'll find the onboard sound surprisingly good for such a thin TV with little apparent space for the speakers. SRS TheatreSound HD gives a well-balanced sound that's surprisingly weighty for a TV but also clear, too. With a 2 x 10 Watt amplifier on board there's also enough power for larger rooms.

The UE40d5520 is the first 40 inch TV in Samsung's new line-up to feature Smart Hub. This brings all the control and search options together in one central hub. Standard on this version of the Smart Hub are Samsung Apps which gives you access to popular sites such as YouTube. Allshare, powered by DLNA, lets you connect the TV up to your home network via Ethernet or optional Wi-Fi dongle. From here you can stream content from your PC or laptop, onto the big screen. Connect Share Movie teams up with the USB sockets to offer film, music or photos to be easily transferred from your digital media device to the TV's screen, via USB socket. In addition to the twin USB sockets there are also four HDMIs - perfect for even the most complex home cinema system. SCART, component and a very handy PC Input complete the package.

Thanks to the LED backlighting, the UE40d5520 has a depth of just 30mm. Combined with the Charcoal Black surround, this makes the UE40d5520 a very subtle and unobtrusive TV - especially if you choose to wall mount it.
