Speaker legends don't get much bigger than the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0.

The original small hi-fi speaker

It's hard to believe that the original Wharfedale Diamond is now past its thirtieth birthday. All those decades ago, it was the Diamond speaker that proved, for the first time, that excellent quality sound could be achieved from a small, budget speaker. Since then there have been dozens of imitators, but the Diamonds remain amongst the best available.

Solid construction
The cabinet isn't just compact, it's also very solid. This combination gives the Diamonds an extremely accurate sound quality as the cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate. Equally impressive are the drive units. A soft dome tweeter gives the clarity and smoothness of sound you'd expect from a more expensive speaker, while the woofer cone uses a carbon fibre type weave to offer extremely taut and responsive bass.

Surprisingly powerful
With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.

Hi-fi connections
It's not just the major aspects of the design that Wharfedale have got right, it's the details, too. Proper 4mm banana sockets will accept thick cable and offer the best type of connection. Threaded sockets at the rear make for secure and easy bracket attachment.

At £100 these speakers were clearly market leaders. Now we're offering them at this bargain price, the Diamond 9.0 speakers are a gem of a deal!

Speaker Enclosure Type
Type of speaker enclosure. Infinite baffle cabinets are sealed and so are often less fussy about placement. Usually they do require a little more power to drive, though. Bass reflex speakers are usually more efficient than infinite baffle designs but may require more care in terms of placement. Rear port designs, in particular, usually need at least 15-30cm (6 - 12 inches) between them and the wall behind, for a balanced bass response.

Rated 5 out of 5†by What's not to like? Basic, excellent value for money speakers with good performance paired with a selection of amplifiers - from a small Lepy 20W to full size stereo separate amps. Well made, robust, box shaped and black. 14 January 2017
Rated 5 out of 5†by Budget speaker but check them out Don't write these budget speakers off without trying them out. I have some ageing Celestion speakers and these provide a similar sound quality at a fraction of the price. I would agree with people who mention the front covers, but concentrate on the sound quality which, as you would expect from Wharfedale, is excellent. Teamed mine with a Denon DM40 mini hifi, minidisc player and supra cable, what a result, really pleased. If you use banana plugs then take them in (I use Cambridge audio ones that do fit, but it's a bit of a squeeze) and test them first. The connectors to the back are partly plastic and space is a little limited, but I am being very picky here. I would definitely go with Wharfedale again, these are a delight. 13 January 2017
Rated 4 out of 5†by Surprisingly good quality Remarkable value, don't let the price or the size fool you, these are worth trying. They look a little odd because of their size on my 1980s stands but they are great replacements for the speakers that finally died over Christmas. Take care if removing and replacing the driver covers as the pins can easily break with this design. 10 January 2017
Rated 5 out of 5†by proof that cheapest in the shop doesn't mean cheap Excellent quality at budget prices, Great sound, easy to put together and no regrets. No need to compromise by getting these , 08 January 2017
Rated 5 out of 5†by Unbelievable for the money! I actually bought these for a friend whose speakers gave up the ghost a few weeks ago. She has been using the speakers that normally serve up sound in my dining room so I've had these on the end of my Devon DAB Micro system over Christmas. Gobsmacked at the value for money these little speakers represent, they are never going be confused with higher end models but at this price who cares! They will suit her system down to the ground and I can have my speakers back! 03 January 2017
Rated 5 out of 5†by Great pair of speakers for the proce Very good sound for the price and size. Highly recommended 03 January 2017
Rated 5 out of 5†by Amazing sound for the money Decided to use a mini system a daughter had "left" but as with many the speakers were small/tiny. Looked for some inexpensive proper speakers and saw these for £40. The difference was amazing - very clear and surprisingly punchy. I now run the TV sound though the system as well - much better than the budget soundbar! 01 January 2017
Rated 5 out of 5†by Sound quality My son bought me these as a Xmas present to hook up to my PC and, they have brought a smile to my face when I play music through them. For such tiny speakers, they do produce some quality sound. I have these hooked up to a Lepy 20w PC amp which is connected to my very high quality sound card in my PC and the sound is just top notch for such a small price. High quality service from Richer sounds Watford. 30 December 2016
