Speaker legends don't get much bigger than the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0.

The original small hi-fi speaker

It's hard to believe that the original Wharfedale Diamond is now past its thirtieth birthday. All those decades ago, it was the Diamond speaker that proved, for the first time, that excellent quality sound could be achieved from a small, budget speaker. Since then there have been dozens of imitators, but the Diamonds remain amongst the best available.

Solid construction
The cabinet isn't just compact, it's also very solid. This combination gives the Diamonds an extremely accurate sound quality as the cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate. Equally impressive are the drive units. A soft dome tweeter gives the clarity and smoothness of sound you'd expect from a more expensive speaker, while the woofer cone uses a carbon fibre type weave to offer extremely taut and responsive bass.

Surprisingly powerful
With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.

Hi-fi connections
It's not just the major aspects of the design that Wharfedale have got right, it's the details, too. Proper 4mm banana sockets will accept thick cable and offer the best type of connection. Threaded sockets at the rear make for secure and easy bracket attachment.

At £100 these speakers were clearly market leaders. Now we're offering them at this bargain price, the Diamond 9.0 speakers are a gem of a deal!

Speaker Enclosure Type
Type of speaker enclosure. Infinite baffle cabinets are sealed and so are often less fussy about placement. Usually they do require a little more power to drive, though. Bass reflex speakers are usually more efficient than infinite baffle designs but may require more care in terms of placement. Rear port designs, in particular, usually need at least 15-30cm (6 - 12 inches) between them and the wall behind, for a balanced bass response.

Rated 5 out of 5by Excellent Excellent sound and value, fast delivery, plenty of choice 27 October 2016
Rated 5 out of 5by Excellent small speaker I needed a couple of small front speakers for my surround sound to replace some really old sony ones. Vast improvement, not only for movies and TV, but also for playing music. There are better speakers out there, but not at this price point; excellent value for money. 16 October 2016
Rated 5 out of 5by Small but perfectly formed. Great sound quality, excellent treble detail, clear midrange and bass response is surprisingly good for a speaker only nine inches high. They will probably sound best on speaker stands or preferably fixed on wall brackets as I have done. Very easy to drive these speakers, they seem very efficient and go quite loud with no problems. Overall, highly recommended. Wharfedale have years of experience and it shows with these little beauties. 13 October 2016

Rated 5 out of 5by They look nice They do look good and from small speakers they sound brill 15 September 2016
Rated 5 out of 5by The TARDIS of the speaker world? I bought these after reading many reviews, all very positive. I had a little peak in the box between the shop and car park, and honestly I thought 'these aren't going to be any good'. I knew they were small speakers but the looked tiny in that box! Anyway, got them home and set up and was amazed at the volume and sound quality they chucked out. They are lacking depth to the bass, but what is there is impressive for the size and really quite well defined. Next purchase I think will be a subwoofer, just to put the icing on the cake. I wonder if it might be an idea to add a link on the speaker page to a suitably matched sub. All in all though, a bargain for the price. 12 September 2016
Rated 4 out of 5by Excellent value for a tiny hifi speaker I remember when the Diamond 1's came out (and then the Active Diamonds); the first budget bookshelf speaker that could claim to be hifi. They weren't bad then and they aren't bad now. I'm doing a narrowboat hifi installation. Electricity is mostly supplied from on-board 12v batteries plus narrowboats are just 6'10" wide, the usual rules of building a hifi separates system are a little different therefore. Every cm and every watt counts. I need a true bookshelf sized speaker, the Diamond 9s are suitably small for the purpose. They also sound very reasonable compared with the car speaker most such boats have. At their original 120 RRP there are plenty of good alternatives. At 60 they are a great value, capable choice. At 40 in the sale they are a bargain, with a pleasant sound, enough bass (even if it lacks extension) and plenty of stereo imaging. Actual hifi for the price of a dozen Starbucks. Who can argue with that. 05 September 2016
