Review of Samsung 55 inch TV: QE55Q7C. PurchaseTwo Stars out of 5.
Upfront, first, let me say this TV has an excellent quality picture. If ever you can get a 4K transmission you are in for a treat, but even your 1080p and 720p are very good.
So only two stars?
Well it is a bit of a bummer when you find the TV has switched itself back on after you've gone to bed or when you return from an evening out. It does not do it all the time, but just occasionally it decides to do its own thing – curiously, when it comes back on, the sound is turned right down to silence and you just see a flickering light on the stairwell wall that tells you it switched itself back on. I am about to go abroad for a couple of weeks so am a bit concerned, but I think I detected one incidence where it switched itself back off again, probably as a result of no activity on the control buttons.
Next, when you press the “Guide” button to see what's on other channels or what's coming up later, you do not get a little box at the top corner of your screen to let you see and hear the current channel you are switched to while you browse (you get this facility with say a Humax Free-sat receiver). Yes, I am talking about the built in Sat receiver with this TV. In some instances you may consider it a blessing that you do not get the little box with a picture because there is some real trash on many channels, but on balance I would have liked the little box – not really a big deal, but it it is not a feature with this model.
Far more of a complaint is, after pressing the “Guide” to check out the programs yet to be transmitted, you hit the “i” button to read the program description and what you get is a truncated description. What do I mean? Well “This is a story about a man who …...” and that's it. The rest of the information becomes available only when the program is being transmitted. Yes, there are shortcomings with the EPG.
Next. My TV is connected to a satellite dish and to a terrestrial aerial. I use the built-in satellite receiver not any external, free standing one – why should I have an external one when there is one in-built? To select signal sources with this TV you click on screen icons – there are ones for each of the HDMI sources for example. However, to select the terrestrial signal source or the internal satellite receiver source there is only the one icon for both – the “Live TV” icon. So how do you choose between satellite and terrestrial? Good question. I am still trying to figure it out. What happens with the “Live TV” icon is that it defaults to the last source you were using, either terrestrial or satellite. These days I make sure that the satellite source is the default. A couple of months ago I had problems with my satellite cable so sought out the terrestrial source and this took some doing, fiddling around in menus, but in the end I got it and the terrestrial source became the default for the “Live TV” icon.
Switching back to satellite was a heck of a problem. I kept getting messages “No source found” or something like that. I got to the point where I thought the internal satellite receiver had broken down and was beginning to dread the idea of having the big lump of equipment lugged back to the shop. Anyway some how I managed to switch the default to satellite and I have made sure it stays like that ever-since. I do not know how I did it, it was a mass of trial and error, but at the end of the day I have learnt that it is possible and that repeated failure to do so is not an indication that the internal sat received has conked. Patience and perseverance are the operative words here, but what were the designers thinking of, what happened to “user friendly”? This aspect is a disaster.
A selling point with this TV is the single cable connecting it to the various sources. Instead of a mass of cables plugging directly into the TV they all plug into a separate box that itself is connected to the TV by a single cable. The box has no scart or VGA socket, but I have no issue with that because I have been able to connect my PC using a VGA to HDMI cable (and I'll not bore you with detail of how I got sound from my PC to my amplification system). The external box could have done with a couple more HDMI sockets and the fact that it had two power cables to plug into your electricity supply was an interesting feature.
The main issue is the placement of this external box; where do you put it? Mine's on the floor, in the corner, behind the unit upon which the TV rests. To get to it I have to drag the unit and TV out of the way and squeeze in – not something I want to do regularly. The box has three USB ports, but there are no USB ports anywhere on the TV itself. If the TV itself had USB ports then plugging in an USB stick would be hastle free. I'll also just mention here that there is no provision to accommodate an SD card on the TV nor on the external box. I have not cracked that one yet, but I assume I could get an USB adaptor to take a SD card to plug into an USB port on the box. My main point is the convenience or otherwise of access to the external box, especially for temporary USB connections. Obviously, its up to the punter where he or she places the box, but it is likely that the more convenient the placement the more the connecting cables are going to intrude visually, which counters the benefit of a single cable connection to the TV.
Well blow me down, the TV has just switched itself back on again.

Great Picture !!Took us a while to decide and wondered if it might be too big...but very happy with his T . Great clarity of picture and great to just speak to the TVs when you want to change channels or volume... We thought big screens were just for the young but they certainly are not....great purchase

Great picture, sound and build qualityExcellent TV, easy to set up, looks and sounds amazing. Went for curved as it sits in corner of room so paid a bit extra for this vs flat screen (though understanding is that this is being phased out as OLED & QLED flat screen TVs work just as well for all angle viewing), but whilst viewing you hardly notice the curvature and I am convincing myself that its a little bit more 'immersive'. I am not that tech savvy but found it very simple to construct the stand and set up the TV with the one connect box (about the size of a DVD player) that essentially means there's only one (thin) lead from the TV to hide away (which can be done through the pedestal stand).
