Speaker legends don't get much bigger than the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0.

The original small hi-fi speaker

It's hard to believe that the original Wharfedale Diamond is now past its thirtieth birthday. All those decades ago, it was the Diamond speaker that proved, for the first time, that excellent quality sound could be achieved from a small, budget speaker. Since then there have been dozens of imitators, but the Diamonds remain amongst the best available.

Solid construction
The cabinet isn't just compact, it's also very solid. This combination gives the Diamonds an extremely accurate sound quality as the cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate. Equally impressive are the drive units. A soft dome tweeter gives the clarity and smoothness of sound you'd expect from a more expensive speaker, while the woofer cone uses a carbon fibre type weave to offer extremely taut and responsive bass.

Surprisingly powerful
With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.

Hi-fi connections
It's not just the major aspects of the design that Wharfedale have got right, it's the details, too. Proper 4mm banana sockets will accept thick cable and offer the best type of connection. Threaded sockets at the rear make for secure and easy bracket attachment.

At £100 these speakers were clearly market leaders. Now we're offering them at this bargain price, the Diamond 9.0 speakers are a gem of a deal!

Speaker Enclosure Type
Type of speaker enclosure. Infinite baffle cabinets are sealed and so are often less fussy about placement. Usually they do require a little more power to drive, though. Bass reflex speakers are usually more efficient than infinite baffle designs but may require more care in terms of placement. Rear port designs, in particular, usually need at least 15-30cm (6 - 12 inches) between them and the wall behind, for a balanced bass response.

WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 9.0 is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 260.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Punch above their weight If you're looking for a small compact speaker to sit on your bookshelf or side boards, you can't go wrong with these speakers. Make sure you break them in well for a couple of days and they will give a very good acoustic sound that fills the room rather than just get louder when you turn the volume up. Great little speakers! especially for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Punch well above their weight These are a very small pair of speakers, which put out alot of noise. Well built, though without any type of feet. I put some little sticky rubber feet on to help them on a glass shelf. I am using them in a conservatory run off the living room amp's second speaker line. They're cheap enough not to be precious over, though quality enough to happily listen to. The carbon fibre cones look great and are hardwearing (I know from having a pair of diamond 8.3's for the last 15 years). They're not quite as clear in the high end as a pair of Q Acoustic 2020i's, but they're less than half the price. Easy to recommend. Can't complain at this price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value. Great sound. I bought these small speakers to save room compared to some old Mission speakers (and their stands )that were taking up too much room in my lounge. The new Wharefedales are linked up to my veteran NAD 3020i amp and the results are fantastic. I was expecting quite a drop in performance compared to the much bigger, and originally much more expensive, Mission speakers but the Wharefdales are more than capable of holding their own. At £49 they seem to represent fantastic value and the quality of their construction, being much heavier than I anticipated, seems to indicate they have a great build quality. Only time will tell if they wear well but with the Richer Sounds free six year gaurantee it is difficult to see how I can go wrong for the amount paid!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth sounding Hey, they are Wharfedale's, one of the best British speaker companies. Nice little boxes that produce a clear sound and good musically. Not strong in the bass, but what there is, is clear enough. Back against a wall or a shelf, they produce a bit more bass. Treble is clear and not razor sharp like some expensive loudspeakers. Just smooth sounding.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value set of speakers I bought these speakers as surround left and right speakers in my 5.1 system. They do their job pretty well! They do not have the depth and bass of the other speakers in my system, however, as surround speakers, they definitely work. The sound is detailed and accurate, if just a little light on the bass side. I am still burning them in at the moment, so they can only get better with some extra time. Perfect price. Very good sound (especially for the money). And they are hefty and ooze quality. I would definitely recommend these AS SURROUND speakers to anyone who is on a tight home theatre budget!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Many an old tune......... Whilst nowhere near a "new" speaker in design the Diamond 9 is an incredibly good sounding speaker. Well made and the size to really sit on a bookshelf. The speaker is a treat to listen to and in a small/medium size room is a first class performer. I initially placed mine either side of a small cd/receiver in a small open bookshelf but placing them apart on two stands really improved the sound - stereo separation was much more evident. If you are looking for a small speaker to improve your listening pleasure then grab these while you can. Purchased mine online from RS - excellent service - delivery tracked and arrived on time. RS take some pride in their service!
