Speaker legends don't get much bigger than the Wharfedale Diamond 9.0.

The original small hi-fi speaker

It's hard to believe that the original Wharfedale Diamond is now past its thirtieth birthday. All those decades ago, it was the Diamond speaker that proved, for the first time, that excellent quality sound could be achieved from a small, budget speaker. Since then there have been dozens of imitators, but the Diamonds remain amongst the best available.

Solid construction
The cabinet isn't just compact, it's also very solid. This combination gives the Diamonds an extremely accurate sound quality as the cabinet doesn't flex or vibrate. Equally impressive are the drive units. A soft dome tweeter gives the clarity and smoothness of sound you'd expect from a more expensive speaker, while the woofer cone uses a carbon fibre type weave to offer extremely taut and responsive bass.

Surprisingly powerful
With a front port, these bass reflex speakers are punchier than you might expect and in no way could they ever be described as tinny. Over all, they may be small but the sound is grown-up, with excellent staging, realism and surprisingly powerful.

Hi-fi connections
It's not just the major aspects of the design that Wharfedale have got right, it's the details, too. Proper 4mm banana sockets will accept thick cable and offer the best type of connection. Threaded sockets at the rear make for secure and easy bracket attachment.

At £100 these speakers were clearly market leaders. Now we're offering them at this bargain price, the Diamond 9.0 speakers are a gem of a deal!

Speaker Enclosure Type
Type of speaker enclosure. Infinite baffle cabinets are sealed and so are often less fussy about placement. Usually they do require a little more power to drive, though. Bass reflex speakers are usually more efficient than infinite baffle designs but may require more care in terms of placement. Rear port designs, in particular, usually need at least 15-30cm (6 - 12 inches) between them and the wall behind, for a balanced bass response.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it! We all need a budget loudspeaker every now and then. I bought this as a front left/right for a new onkyo 7.2.2 amp. I heard the original Diamond when it came out in the 1980's and remember how wide the frequency range was but it was let down but it's £1.50 tweeter. This version is totally redesigned and much better as a result. Blown away how much better it is than the rear Maudaunt Short Ms10 I bought last year for £69.99! Bargain of the speaker world no doubt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from classic still great These were the go to speakers of their time and it hasn't changed much for today's market. The wharfdale diamond 9's are perfect for everyday use, compact and powerful with two looks, naked or covered. Sound isn't distorted unless you're cranking up the volume to ear bleeding level, which if you're in the home or small workplace you wouldn't be. very good value speakers from a trusted source.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good little speakers Recently bought a mini 'Hi-Fi' Medion system. Unfortunatley my ears said that the included speakers were perhaps the worst I've ever heard. After buying these diamonds, I can confirm my ears were correct. These are little gems, quality build, smooth and well balanced sound. Everything sounds far superior. Now my mini system is actually Hi-Fi.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A tidy product that does the job The speakers are similar in design to many box speakers but have a neat, solid and well-built feel. Although they offer the possibility of stand mounting, the footprint is small enough to permit it to be mounted on a shelf. Sound quality is excellent with a clean, punchy presence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For the price a very good product for small spaces These are some of the smallest (book shelf) style speakers I have owned. I intended to use these speakers to replace the usb syle speakers I had borrwed from my girlfriend to get sound from my pc. The Warfdale Diamound 9.0 speakers fit very nicely to the left, right and just poping out beind my monitor. They can get quite load and although that would be fine for some I prefer my volume at aroun 1.5 to 2.0 out fo ten on the amp. They do sound better than the previous usb speakers which is to be expected as the materials and construction is reflected in the price really. Very pleased with the purchase and would recomend the speakers along with the service I have had from Richer Sounds :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't be deceived by their size The speakers are small there is no getting away from that but and it is a big but, they don't sound small at all. Before I bought them I was worried that they might not have a lot of bass how wrong was I!!! I have them on a Denon DM40 in my bedroom as I work from home I wanted a good sound to work to and this is a perfect set up small enough to fit in but with the sonic muscle to bang out the tunes when you want them. The front firing bass port can move some serious air. If you are looking for seismic bass then look elsewhere they cannot go seriously low but don't shame themselves I was pleasantly surprised at how much bass there is and detail too. Cons at low volume the mid range can be a little recessed but with a bit of volume this is sorted. Overall very impressed loved the original diamonds and these are no let down buy with confidence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Punches well above their weight I decided to buy these as the speakers on my old Technics tuner had died. I never expected them to sound the way they do. For the size and cost they are truly awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic sound quality in a small package I bought these speakers as a replacement for some basic PC speakers I had been using for the past few years on my computer and as a return to hi-fi sound for my system. The outstanding sound quality and detail in the music makes me wish I had bought them sooner! They are a perfect fit for the bookshelf above my desk and have ample power and sound staging to fill the studio room I work in. They also represent exceptional value which was one of the key decisions that lead to buying them. They are the perfect compliment to my Denon PMA-250III amplifier, which I'm glad to have reason to put to good use. For hi-fi enthusiasts on a tight budget with a small space to fill, I would thoroughly recommended these speakers as the perfect choice!
