The best made better

Hear every detail
With decades of experience in the studio few can beat AKG's heritage. With the K550s, AKG have sought to recreate that studio sound with toned down aesthetics. Using their largest 50mm drivers and a closed back design gives these headphones a deep, powerful bass that's also very tightly controlled and realistic. And thanks to what AKG call, 'Real Image Engineering', the K550's sound open, accurate and engaging - even over extended listening periods.

Total comfort
With their large earpieces, the K550's wrap around your ears for total audio immersion. They're also lightweight and with the newly designed headband, very comfortable to wear. Although larger than the average headphone, the closed-back design prevents sound leakage, making them ideal for quality music on the go. The 2D-Axis mechanism with folding ear cups also make them easier to pack in your bag.

Supersize your listening experience, with the AKG K550 MKIII.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sublime I had owned the original K550 headphones for years, they were always my "go to" set, at home or for travelling. The cable was always too long though!! Happily that has now been rectified, having removable cable means I can use whatever length I desire. The sound is exceptional as ever, open back sound from closed back headphones, remarkable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent performance and good value After researching a number of headphone makes I went for these AKG’s the sound reproduction is excellent, the clarity and soundstage they produce is brilliant. Oh and by the way they are comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Headphones and excellent price The AKG K550’s are what are known as “reference” headphones – this means that they are specifically designed to play the music you are listening to exactly the way it was recorded, without adding anything like “Bass Boost” or “Dynamic Bass” or such like. This means that the music being played will be heard in exactly the way that the band or musicians intended it to be heard, with no fake adjustments or enhancements. This means that the music being played is perfectly balanced between the bass, mid-range and treble and is of studio quality, rather than having for example over enhanced bass that drowns out the other aspects of the tune. This fact alone makes these headphones stand out against competitors – the separation between instruments and vocals is tremendous, and you can easily hear each component part of the band, whilst at the same time hearing them all blend together to form a sum of their parts, which is a real joy to hear and makes you appreciate the music so much more. This is particularly noticeable on a song or tune that you are very familiar with and have heard many times – it’s like hearing the tune properly for the first time, and you will hear every little nuance that is otherwise lost with less well designed or inferior headphones. The K550’s are relatively large, and are designed for home use rather than the daily commute. With this in mind, the headphone cable is 3m long (around 9 feet) making it easy to attach to your stereo without having to move your favourite chair! They could be used outdoors or on the train, but that is not their primary function and there are other headphones better suited for travelling purposes. I have had them for about 2 months now, and deliberately held off on writing a review so as to give some details after a longer period of use. I have to say, that each time I use them – which is practically daily, they sound better and better each time, but they sound great even on the first listen. I have also listened to various different styles of music to see what they are best suited to. Having done so, I can say with confidence that they will carry pretty much any style, but for me where they really shine is with acoustic guitars. Although they will handle most any style, I think that their capability and subtlety would be a bit lost on some harder House music, or thrash metal at the other end of the scale, but for anything in between, they sound fantastic. The Mk III’s are the latest in the range, having been preceded by the Mk II’s. The main difference between the two is that the Mk III’s have a detachable cable, and the Mk II’s don’t. There are also some slight tweaks to the headband on the Mk III’s that have improved comfort. Otherwise – and crucially from an audio perspective, they are identical to the Mk II’s. They are really comfy to wear for long periods of time and despite their relatively large size, do not feel heavy or cumbersome. On the contrary, the foam pads cover your ears nicely without squashing them, and by angling the axis of each side you can achieve maximum comfort and sound quality very easily. The K550’s were awarded the What Hi-Fi? Award in 2017 for best home over-ear headphones, and for good reason. The sound quality cannot be over stated, it is excellent and really does breathe new life into your favourite songs and albums, and brings a grin to your face when you hear parts of songs you’ve never heard before despite knowing the song like the back of your hand – a real joy. PRO’s Exceptional sound quality Crisp, clear and defined separation of instruments and vocals Comfy to wear and relatively lightweight for their size Excellent build quality and finish CON’s Genuinely none This is an honest consumer review based upon my own purchased set of K550 Mk III headphones. There are many independent reviews online for the same headphones which also routinely give them a massive thumbs up, which I can whole heartedly say is well deserved – excellent headphones, which I am so glad I purchased. If you are researching new headphones for your home stereo, these should definitely be on your short list!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great clarity, well balanced; value for money! After using the headphones for a few weeks now, I can vouch that they are great value for money. Ultimately, these headphones are ideal for starting music producers (e.g.bedroom producers) or people who want to elevate their listening experience - it's a great stepping stone between consumer quality and professional quality headphones. The price of the product isn't too hostile and is substantially cheaper than competing headphones (especially on richer sounds) which is why the product offers great bang for your buck. The sound itself is well balanced and has good clarity, aswell as sounding open and unhindered. Listening to music becomes a more immersive and detailed experience which is how the product sets itself apart from similarly priced competitors. From a production perspective, the headphones gives unimpaired, solid feedback and can be used confidentally when mixing and mastering - its not a top range reference headphone but it sure does get the job done and is a fine cut for such a low price! However, with all that being said, the product does have it's downsides. For one, you cannot wear these out and about - they're big, bulky, and have a 3m cable. These headphones are more so designed for home use and are ideal for that. Another thing is that the headphones get warm around your ears after extended listening; this makes it sweaty and uncomfortable which disrupts your listening session. I also noticed that when listening at high volumes the audio can get distorted and lose quality - to harness the best juice from these headphones you should use a mixer (but for general listening it isn't a big deal). Altogether though, these headphones are a great purchase and I would highly recommend them if you're the type of person looking for that stepping stone; durable, lucid, comfortable, balanced, and great value for money. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks sufficiently in my opinion, therefore i give it 5/5! P.S. if you're a bass head these headphones won't neccesarily deliver - this is not a criticism of the product but rather a notice that these headphones are designed to be balanced and accurate - they won't artifically enhance the bass like some other headphones might. I find the range of this product to be excellent and it handles bass adeptly but it won't be biased to making the song bassier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Woukd be worth it at double the price Great set of cans. Large and comfy ear cups that totally isolate you. Head band is easily adjustable and really comfy for long sessions. The sound stage feels massive, so much so you'd be forgiven for forgetting these are closed back cans. They need a good 100hrs or so of burn in but you'll be throughly rewarded with exceptional levels of clarity and detail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value A great pair of reference headphones with great clarity, a bit light on bass, but these are reference quality, it makes a change to hear the music as it should be heard.
