Top end components

Lift the lid on the Cambridge CXA80 and you'll find components and technology that would usually only be found on much more expensive designs. At its heart is a fully symmetrical Class A/B amplifier, which ensures a precise, even sound with excellent separation between the right and left channels.

Toroidal transformer
Powering the amp is a large toroidal power transformer with separate, dual-mono windings. Separate winding for the left and right channels creates a clarity and imaging more reminiscent of amplifiers from a class or two above. Renowned for their low noise, high efficiency and superior sound quality, the over-sized transformer gives the CXA80 a powerful, dynamic sound and a hefty 80W per channel power output - enough to drive most speakers to high levels in pretty much all domestic environments.

Built-in DAC
The Cambridge CXA80 has been to work just as well with digital sources as analogue ones. Cambridge has fitted a high quality Wolfson WM8740 DAC chipset for sound that could actually improve the sound of your existing digital sources. With two optical digital inputs and one coaxial one, you can connect up to three digital sources, such as games console, TV and a CD transport such as the matching Cambridge CXC.

Asynchronous USB
A further highlight of the CXA80's spec is the asynchronous USB socket at the rear. This makes the ideal connection for hooking up your computer, as it will effectively 'control' the PC's output for the best sound quality possible. This greatly reduces jitter and gives the highest quality sound possible from your computer audio.

Optional Bluetooth
Add the optional Cambridge BT100 Bluetooth dongle (cost option) and you'll be able to enjoy Bluetooth connectivity with your Bluetooth-equipped devices. Not only will the music from your Bluetooth device sound superb through the unit's sophisticated DAC technology, but as it uses the higher grade Bluetooth aptX CODEC, it will be as close in quality as its possible to get to a conventional wired connection.

Plenty of analogue inputs
More usually found on 'reference' hi-fi and professional equipment, the CXA80 boasts balanced XLR inputs. When connected to a suitable source, this gives a fully balanced, hot/cold, connection for the ultimate analogue signal quality. The Cambridge CXA80 also has four line level inputs: easily enough for the vast majority of systems. An added bonus is the 3.5mm, front-mounted input, perfect for connecting an MP3 player or smartphone for convenient playback. Other handy connections include an RCA subwoofer output, headphone socket and connections for two pairs of speakers.

Sleek style
The CXA80 is part of the totally redesigned CX-Series. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXA80 a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the matching CD transport and network player. Yet it's far more than just a good-looking case; it helps the sound quality, too. With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the amp from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise.

If you've been looking for an amp with the finest sound quality without compromising connectivity, you need look no further. The Cambridge CXA80 has it all!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cambridge CXA80 Bought these speakers along with an amp in the Black Friday sales. Saved a very healthy amount of money! Hurrah!! I've spent over 6 months reading, re-reading reviews, comments on so many Hifi separate components, been to all the review web sites, spent a very unhealthy amount of time going back and forth in my decision of separates, but ultimately went with my instinct and with a little help from Richersound Newcastle. I wanted a system to build over the next year or so (to spread the cost) but the most immediate purchase was to have a system where I could plug my Mac into the integrated amp. After being shown a Yamaha, a Marantz and the Cambridge CXA60 I was advised to go with the Cambridge, for when I get a turntable, as it produces a nice warm sound. With that in mind I chose the Dali Zensor 1's, over the Monitor Audio's, to accompany the Cambridge CXA80 (it has the asynchronous usb port). And what a great decision it's turned out to be. I have left reviewing the speakers and amp until they've had sufficient time to burn in. Now they have I can gladly say the sound is amazing! Everything sounds so clear. You can hear the individual instruments but where the pair really excel are in the singer's voice! Wow oh Wow! It just really gets under your skin! Stick on Folk, Jazz, RnB, Rock and the vocals sound like they're sat right in front of you! Amazing!! Can't wait to pair my new system with the Cambridge CDC & a Rega Planar!! If you're looking at either of the separates then don't hesitate, you won't regret it! Oh, and while you're planning your purchase remember to save money for your interconnects. My speaker cables (QED with banana plugs & Audioquest Carbon usb) cost the same as I paid for the Dali's!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product After reading lots of reviews I purchased this amp for these reasons. First it has a decent built in dac so no need to purchase a separate Item which would take up more space. I use tidal on the pc and connect straight to the amp via usb in mode 2. You can’t do this on the cxa60. The 80 watts of power gives the extra head room to cope with transients in music. I purchased KEF LS50 speakers to match with the amp and am very happy with the sound. Another feature I use is the digital input to connect my tv. Just works brilliantly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The next level I bought this to replace my Arcam Alpha 8 which has wam deep sound but as its a bit of old school kit I was aware that I probably losing out on some detail. Money well spent indeed. It delivers a beautiful rich sound full of colour and more detail than I could have imagined. Everything from Muddy Waters to Yello sounds freshly minted. A wise investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Amp I bought this along with the matching CD transport unit and the sound and clarity are incredible. I am very impressed and pleased with this purchase. Thanks to Dylan and all the friendly staff at York Centre store for all their help, advice and patience with me

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thank you Mark from Croydon! My old faithful huge lump of an amp Sony TA-FB940 gave up the ghost &, after a long explanation of my love for vinyl, musical tastes & hi-fi set up, Mark got me down for a demo of the CX-80 + 651P phono stage. I sat there for over half and hour playing some of my favourite records & was blown away by how controlled, clear and powerful this amp sounds. My one critisism is it's almost too controlled, restraining the sound a bit - oddly on classical music, whack on some heavy funk, deep house & frantic drum & bass & the Cambridge comes alive. The sound was also a little forward, in your face, but having had it at home for a week it's settling down. I play my records every day anyway but have been delightly playing even more and marveling at the sound - especially as I was inspired to pimp up my Rega RP1 (acrilyic platter, stylus, belt, mat, feet & damping kit). Life is so much better now, so thanks again Mark! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Accurate and clean The feature set is fantastic. The fact that it includes a DAC means that if you intend to play music from your PC this is pretty much a one stop shop. It has enough inputs to become the centre of a stereo home theatre system too. I have my sky box and ps4 hooked up to to it. The sound is fantastic. It's ever so clean and it's as though there's nothing between you and the music. It's all so effortless.
