Subwoofer

Don't be fooled by its compact size, the Dali Fazon E-9F is a devastatingly effective subwoofer.

Part of the 5-star, award-winning Fazon 5.1 pack

Partnered with the Dali Fazon 1 5.1 system, the E-9F subwoofer helped secure the system Best traditional package £700-£1500 in the 2013 Awards and a five-star review in What Hi-Fi? magazine. Considered one of the finest budget subwoofers from Dali in some time, the E-9F certainly doesn't want for critical praise.

Aluminium cone
Featuring a 9", aluminium woofer unit, the Dali E-9F is capable of moving a great deal of air with piston-like efficiency. Aluminium is extremely light yet rigid, ensuring that the E-9F is both quick to respond yet also subtle enough to provide a textured bass response. Attached to the cone you'll find a quad layer voice coil and large magnet. These give the E9F not only great bass control but also long term reliability.

170W amp inside and simple controls
With its Class D digital amplifier built-in, the E9F produces an immense 170W. This low distortion amplifier provides the bass cone with a powerful, well-balanced sound for even the largest rooms. On the rear panel you'll find controls for volume, phase and frequency cut-off, plus the option of auto on/off.

With Danish style and sound, plus a tight, tuneful bass, the Dali E9F is hard to beat.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unimpressed When looking for a subwoofer I had narrowed it down to the REL TZero or the Dali E9F, and eventually opted for the Dali as on paper it has a beter spec - principally a larger speaker and more power. I also considered that a forward firing speaker (as in the Dali) may be better suited to my room than a downward firing seaker (as in the REL), as the room has deep carpet. I listened to the Dali and REL in a Richer Sounds store and it sounded to me that the REL was much subtler (in a good way) and controlled than the Dali, but still went for the Dali as I thought this must be due to the set-up, which I could adjust in my house to ge the right sound. Upon setting up the Dali I was not impressed with many aspects, but please note that these are specific to my set up and tastes so your requirements may be different - please listen to these subwoofers and decide for yourself! The Dali is a much larger cabinet, which was difficult to place as it doesn't just tuck away in a corner - which is the optimum placement - as you can with the REL. This meant that the subwoofer had to be placed in view, and it it not a good looking thing. The cabinet is fairly basic, but the speaker itself is silver which really stands out as no grill is supplied (you can buy one for an additional £30!). In addition there is a bright blue LED on the front of the subwoofer which is very prominent and distracting - I have no idea why this is on the front. It should be on the back. More importantly, I did not find the sound impressive at all despite trying to set it up correctly. The Dali E9F subwoofer seems very one-dimensional and just booms in a quite uncontrolled way. Many reviews talk about 'room shaking bass' and the like, but for me it is the subtle low end sounds that add depth to films as much as the dramatic louder sounds, and the Dali did not seem to produce much in this range. I decided to take the Dali back and swap it for the REL (thank you Richer Sounds), and I am extremely glad that I did. The REL is very different, and for me a much better subwoofer. The cabinet is smaller and can be tucked away behind furniture or speakers, but in addition to this it has a beatiful gloss black finish which is hand polished and reflects its surroundings, almost allowing it to disappear into the background. The sound is its most impressive feature however. Neither the small size of the cabinet, or smaller speaker or lesser output (than the Dali) ever seem to be any constraint on the REL's performance. The TZero has a staggering depth and reproduces a full range of low-frequency sounds in a highly controlled way, from huge explosions to the almost inaudible echo in a cave that expands the soundstage immensely and gives the scene real ambience. I am still being surprised by how good and full the sound is, and it certainly fills my room. My carpet is no constraint at all! In addition to this, the REL is a very well made product and it is clear that they have put a lot of thought and effort into it. The TZero is one of the most impressive pieces of 'kit' that I have ever bought - it really is that impressive. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the REL TZero, which performs exactly as I had hoped and far better than the Dali. I thoroughly recommend that you audition the REL if you are considering the Dali. Please note that I have also posted a review on the REL TZero as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ADDS PRESENCE I still enjoy the tactile nature of little silver discs so the first step towards updating my ageing hi-fi system was the purchase of a Cambridge Audio Azur CD player, closely followed by an Azur 650a amp. I was taken by the positive reviews of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers, so I bought a couple of pairs for two adjacent rooms. I was generally very pleased with them but I fancied a little more bass, which I thought would materialise once the units had many hours of playing behind them. I visited my local store for advice and the Dali E9F was recommended because it would integrate smoothly with the Diamonds' frequency range. A demo was set up with similar speakers and I was greatly impressed. It is powerful but versatile, and it gives the extra dimension (and more) that I was looking for without having to needlessly upgrade my existing speakers. It can be set to give an optimum performance or it can be tweaked to suit individual pieces of music or my listening moods enabling me to have the rhythm section playing happily in the background or stepping forward to join me in the room. I'm very pleased with the purchase and many thanks to Steve for his time and help during my visits to the store and for his follow-up courtesy phone call. (I did wonder how its downward-facing port would perform on the thick carpet of my chosen room, and I soon had my answer. When I set the controls to the initial recommended positions and hit the Play button my heart sank as the speaker boomed and rattled but when I lifted the front and inch or so, it calmed down. Fortunately, I had something to hand to made an ideal base for it to stand on to eliminate the back pressure and, once that little task was out of the way, I settled down to enjoy it to the full.)
