Enhanced damping
The idea behind using a leather platter mat is that it delivers the ideal amount of vibration damping. Felt mats can be underdamped, especially when used on metal platters. Thick rubber mats, by contrast, can be overdamped, which can lead to static build-up and more noticeable ‘clicks’ and ‘pops’ from the record surface. This 2mm thick leather mat damps resonances and vibrations more effectively than felt, without the static build-up of a rubber mat.
Resists dust
Another material advantage over felt mats is the reduced build-up of dust. Felt mats can collect dust, especially if your deck isn’t fitted with a dust lid. The dust can then transfer to the record, building up in the grooves and harming the sound quality.
