"Want to know what the best sounding budget speakers on the market are? Easy, its Wharfedales brand-new Diamond 220s." What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine, 5-star review.

The legend continues

It was back in 1981 when the Wharfedale Diamond first redefined expectations of small speakers. The original model proved that a small speaker didn't necessarily need to sound 'small', that a budget speaker could sound full-bodied without being intrusive. The latest Diamond 220 follows on from the highly successful 121 model and has already received an excited response.

New cabinet for improved sound
New to the Wharfedale Diamond 220 is a sandwich cabinet design. Rather than the simple chipboard and MDF used by the previous Diamond 121, the new 220 uses particle board sandwiched by MDF on either side. This gives superb rigidity and damping properties, helping to further reduce the already low levels of distortion. A further benefit is the smooth MDF construction provides a cleaner surface for the veneer; meaning a smoother finish all round.

Ported design
Also new is the gloss finished baffle, making the speakers far more pleasing to the eye. As before, the 220 ports the bass via an integral plinth, rather than the more usual front or rear holes. This not only provides a more efficient and even bass output but also makes the speaker easier to place: you don't have to take wall positioning into account.

New drive units, class-leading sound
The bass driver is formed from woven Kevlar with ribs for added rigidity, but has a revised magnet system for tighter control of the sound. Vocals still sound incredibly realistic, and the bass is upbeat and never lags. At the other end of the scale the treble unit is surrounded by a deeply dished waveguide. This helps to improve the imaging and 'width' of sound, making it easier to pick out individual instruments, as well as providing loads of detail. Put together, the overall sound quality is still fantastically well-balanced.

With its latest upgrades the Wharfedale Diamond 220 has truly come of age. If ever there was an argument for evolution over revolution in speaker design, a listen to the Diamond 220 proves the case for the former - and then some!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound at reasonable price Got these to use with a Yamaha RX-V479 receiver. Sound is amazing for music and films. Put them up on 40cm stands next to 50” TV, massive improvement over the soundbar I had before. Mids and highs are very clear, no need for a sub as they go low and don’t distort the sound. They did need a couple weeks to bed in as at first bass was very restricted and tinny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding value and great sound I got these speakers as part of a package with a Marantz mini system and a Yamaha sub-woofer. I'd been meaning to get a not too expensive hifi with a music streaming option for a long time and am so pleased I did. I'd read the almost overwhelmingly positive reviews of the Wharfedale Diamond 220s, both professional and user views, and decided it didn't seem worth paying any more for anything else. I got the black finish and they look great on some good quality stands I already had for some much bigger speakers. By the way, if you want to use stands, the tops need to be as big as the speaker base or the rubber feet that come loose with the Diamonds may not let the speaker sit flat. I was able to leave the feet off as my stand plates had their own rubber pads. One of the best design features of the Diamonds is the narrow, open slot at the base, which is a bass port. This allows you to position the speakers closer to a wall than you might expect with most hifi speakers. It's ideal for my not very big room. I said I'd bought a sub-woofer with the speakers and am pleased I did, though I tried disconnecting it and there's still a satisfying amount of bottom end available from the Diamonds. Personally, I'd still see a sub as essential, but I think you'd be fine without, other than for home cinema applications.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing value. Bought the Diamond 220s to replace a pair of Mordaunt Short M20s, and what a difference! They're a massive improvement sonically and in terms of build quality, with the glossy black front panels adding a touch of class. I have them wired to my Marantz PM6005 with Audioquest FLX-SLiP cables, and they really make the system sing. Amazing value, at this price there's nothing to touch them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wharfedale Speakers I brought these for a present. After researching various reviews, I have brought a number of items over the years (since the 1970's) from Richer Sounds and have always had good service at great prices

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good value speakers I use these speakers with a Denon M41 DAB hi-fi unit. Not quite a match for the Monitor Bronze 2 speakers I use with an Onkyo A 9010 amp but perfectly satisfactory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Speakers Couldn't be more pleased. They have replaced my old Mission floorstanders and they sound so much better,
