"If you've already got a good DAC, the Cambridge CXC transport is a no-brainer."
'What Hi-Fi? Sound & Vision magazine'. 5-star review. Tested at £300.

Transport-only design

The Cambridge CXC is a CD transport only, so inside you'll only find 'half' of what's usually inside a CD player. Although this may sound unconventional, it has many benefits. The most obvious of these is cost effectiveness, but there are sonic benefits to be had, too. Without an onboard DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor), the power supply only has to drive the CD transport. By being dedicated to this task it can provide a clean, stable power supply for the highest performance possible at its price.

Pair with your choice of DAC
Another advantage is increased flexibility. Chose to match with one of the Cambridge CXA digital amplifiers or use your own choice of DAC entirely. By starting with such a high quality transport design, the CXC could see you through many system and DAC upgrades without being in the least bit out of place.

S3 servo
Rather than using 'off the shelf' CD software, Cambridge uses its own S3 servo processor. Dedicated to CD music playback rather than the multi-purpose disc readers, the CXC maximises the full potential of your audio CDs. With state-of-the-art error correction your CDs simply sound more realistic, more dynamic and more detailed than with other players.

Sleek style
The CXC is part of the totally redesigned CX-Series. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXC a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the digital amplifiers and network player. Yet it's far more than just a good-looking case - it helps the sound quality, too. With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the player from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise.

Dedicated to the finest sound from CD possible, the Cambridge CXC CD transport redefines CD playback quality at its price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase. This CD transport was bought to replace an ageing Micromega CD player running through a Cyrus Pre2 DAC and X Power power amp. I cannot claim to be an expert at all but the difference was really noticeable. The sound stage is definitely better and the instruments can be picked out more clearly. I had toyed with getting a Cyrus transport bit have saved 500 quid am really pleased with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant with 851N, 851W & Tannoy Precision 6.4 At first I was a bit underwhelmed, the first couple of hours were a bit dull and lifeless but have persevered for around 9 hours running in so far. My precision 6.4's are running in too but every hour I am noticing more and more, the sound is gradually verging on brilliant. The CXC running through the 851N's DAC is looking to be stunning. I am most impressed, the speakers need a good 100 hours before they show their best and no doubt the CXC too but if what I am hearing at this stage is anything to go by then I have an amazing system running in. I listened to Floyd's Division Bell and noticed things I never have heard before, Malia's new album is also a treat, the detail the CXC picks up is quite shocking. The Bass is rich and the Mids and high's beautifully balanced. The stereo image is mind blowing. I am like a kid in a Candy shop at the moment, picking which CD next to play. I did think the price of the CXC to be relatively low in the first instance, now I can see it will battle with players 4 x the price. Ok it is a Transport but wow, all you need is a good DAC, the 851N certainly is shining in this regard. Anyone with the 851N should consider this little transport as they work very well together. I am yet to hear my system's true potential, maybe I will write another review after 100 hours run in but after 9 hours and an evening of listening I am moved enough to pen this :) I am using balanced connections from the 851N to 851W and fibre optic from the CXC to 851N, all routed to the stunning Tannoy Precision 6.4's which I was very lucky to acquire recently. The Cambridge Audio Azur 851's, CXC and Tannoy precision 6.4's are an awesome combination :) I can't wait to hear it when it's all bedded and run in :) but having a joy of a time witnessing the growing improvement hour by hour. The CXC is a well built little unit, the only thing I think could be improved is the display as a little on the dim side but that's not why I purchased it, my ears confirm my researched choice, it is a brilliant No brainer as What hifi states, very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good CD Transport I bought this along with the rest of the system, the CXN V2 media player and the CXA80 Stereo amp. As it’s just a transport it connects to the amps digital input to utilise the amps built in DAC, sound wise it’s very good, it certainly digs up plenty of data from those CDs and lets the listener know about it, the detail is astonishing, a very open rythamitic sound that hooks you right away, I really wasn’t expecting this type of sound from a £300 player, it’s easily worth double that price tag, build quality is very good, the finish is excellent like the rest of the CX Series range, my only quibble (and it’s a small one) is the display could have been a touch brighter, other than that it’s a stonking bit of kit with a class performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from outstanding performance in view of price Replaced a Marantz CD player, using a Quad Vena amplifier. All aspects of the system has been improved, the voicing is very balanced, unlike the Marantz CD player, which is bright and two dimensional. The Marantz player was very good, possibly the best in class, but is outclassed in voicing, dynamics, subtlety in bass response and especially in voice and treble. An outstanding transport, very neutral and amazing value for money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent piece of equipment Bought two weeks ago to compliment my Cambridge Audio CXA80 amp and am delighted with the outcome

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive transport I had been using a Rotel RCD06 as a transport for a few years into a Musical Fidelity M1 Dac and had done various things to get the most out of it's sound. Finally though, I wanted to see what a transport separate was like and after being outbid on several Cyrus transports I pulled the trigger and bought a brand new CXC with the 6 year supercare. Even after an hour, it's a different world. It has a much bigger, fuller sound with excellent separation showing up the Rotel as thinnish, clanky and congested with heavy, busy music. A case in point is drums. Now they're up front and centre and create a rock solid soundstage. This is the only CD transport I've heard and I don't know how purely a transport the Rotel was when I used it as such (or any other standalone cd player), but the CXC is the bees knees.
