What better way of celebrating 55 years of Technics than with an ultimate, limited edition of its classic turntable – the SL12010GAE. Developed as a turntable that was sturdy enough to be used professionally but simple and attractive enough to use at home, the Technics SL1210 has been a hit from the days of disco. Now in Limited Edition GAE form, it's the best ever!
The best SL1210 ever
The Technics SL1210 has always been superbly built but this is even better. Added to the existing three-layer chassis is a new, 10mm thick top panel, crafted from solid aluminium. This provides superior damping for a more dynamic sound. Other enhancements include a brass-topped platter, with twice the inertial mass of an SL1200 MK5, and zinc insulator feet, as used in Technics’ top SL-1000R turntable. The powerful, coreless direct-drive motor uses twin rotors for high torque and an even load on the bearing.
Top quality magnesium tonearm
Finished in the matte black, the limited edition, magnesium tonearm makes this turntable even more special. Lightweight magnesium offers a high damping effect, reducing distortion. It's also extremely rigid, helping the tonearm offer the most precise and detailed sound. High precision bearings and Technics' gimbal suspension provide the smoothest tracking.
Connect your own cables
Rather than using static cables, the SL1210GAE features brass-milled, gold-plated phono terminals. These let you choose your own length and quality of cable that's worthy of a deck of this capability.
Supplied with Nagaoka JT-1210 cartridge
Continuing the limited edition theme, the SL1210GAE also comes with a very special cartridge. Developed by a joint team of engineers from Technics and cartridge experts, Nagaoka, the JT-1210 Moving Magnet cartridge is designed to perfectly match the turntable’s characteristics. For the highest level of focus and precision, it uses a Boron cantilever.
Unique style
Finished in all-black, the SL1210GAE has the style to match its sophistication. A unique badge is inscribed with the individual serial number. Detailed enhancements include the ability to turn off the strobe light – ideal if you’re listening at home and want to reduce distractions.

Technics SL1210GAE
Got this turntable to replace a relatively high spec Linn LP12. (Linn LP12, Lingo, Kore, Khan top plate, Trampoline, EKOS arm) but got fed up with the cost of servicing the TT and the fact that in order to carry out the service involved a 1 hour drive each way...
So wanted a 'plug n play' TT of high quality that was hopfully as good as the LP12.
The Technics is a match to the LP12, a slightly different sound, better deeper bass, more detailed sound, but a slightly reduced sound stage. However I did swap out the cartridge to a Dynavector 20x2, and used high quality Atlas interconnect cables.
I like the black finish of the GAE model, hence going for this model vs the cheaper G version, in addition the GAE comes with a five year guarantee...
Although this TT looks like the Technics of the past, the weight of the deck (18kg) and cost really means this is no longer a deck for DJs... not that this bothers me.
All in all, this is a superb audiophile turntable, well up to matching and exceeding traditional 'high end hifi decks'
