“The Cambridge delivers a full-bodied performance that’s hugely pleasing to listen to” What Hi-Fi Award Winner 2017

Sound engineering

The Cambridge CXN puts sound quality first and it does this through the use of quality electronics and painstaking design. Using twin Wolfson DACs (Digital to Analogue Convertors), each channel has its own DAC to process its own information. This gives a more precise and accurate sound quality with improved stereo imaging. When combined with the 2-Pole Dual Differential Bessel, noise reducing filter, the DACs help give the CXN outstanding levels of clarity and transparency of sound. Simply put, this network player will pull out subtle nuances of sound that you might never even have heard before!

Stream all your stored music - including High Resolution files
With UPnP (Universal Plug n' Play) compatibility it's easy to connect the Cambridge CXN to your home network and stream from your NAS drive, hard drive, PC or laptop. The CXN accepts a wide range of files, including many high resolution formats. ALAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, WMA, MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+ and OGG Vorbis are all supported, making this a highly flexible streamer.

AFT2 Up-Sampling for the ultimate detail and least jitter
The Cambridge CXN improves sound quality still further with an Anagram Technologies AFT2 24 bit/384 kHz up-sampling circuit. ATF (Adaptive Time Filtering) up-sampling 'stretches' the music to give the highest resolution possible. Up-sampling sound gives a smoother, more relaxed sound quality with added detail. You'll also notice enhanced depth of sound and a more natural quality without the "edge" that can afflict digital music. You'll hear every detail, including every deep breath, squeaky chair and flutter of sheet music; in short, it's like being there for real! AFT2 even aids native 24-bit/192kHz recordings with a faster sampling rate for even less jitter.

Connect to Internet radio and Spotify Connect
In addition to supporting over 20,000, easy to access Internet radio stations, the CXN is also compatible with the most popular music streaming services. Spotify is the world's most popular streaming service and the CXN has Spotify Connect integrated into it. If you subscribe to Spotify Premium, you can control the Cambridge with the powerful Spotify Connect app on your phone or tablet. Should you prefer other music services, the CXN also supports Napster, BBC iPlayer for radio, Aupeo! Pandora and Rhapsody.

AirPlay and optional Bluetooth
In addition to comprehensive streaming capabilities over LAN, Wi-Fi and USB, the CXN is also compatible with Apple's AirPlay streaming. Use it with your iPhone, iPad PC or Mac and wireless stream your iTunes library or other compatible music services. Connect up the optional BT100 dongle and you'll be able to stream your music from any smartphone, tablet or other device with Bluetooth built-in.

Built-in digital pre-amp - just add active speakers!
If you're seeking quality hi-fi from a minimal system then the built-in digital pre-amp will appeal. Simply add active speakers via the digital or analogue outputs and you'll be able to control the volume and balance via the CXN.

Fully connected, including XLR Balanced sockets and 4 USBs
When it comes to connectivity the CXN has everything you'd expect and possibly more. The highlight is the fitment of XLR balanced sockets. When used with a compatible amplifier, such as the matching Cambridge CXA80, these connections give the ultimate analogue link possible, with greatly improved resistance to interference. Added to this there are no fewer than four USB interfaces. The front-mounted socket is ideal for connecting temporary devices such as USB media sticks. At the back, two interfaces take care of a more permanently connected media device plus the optional Bluetooth dongle port. A Type B asynchronous USB input is provided for the direct connection of your PC or Mac. This makes the ideal connection for hooking up your computer as it will effectively 'control' the PC's output for the best sound quality possible. This greatly reduces jitter and gives the highest quality sound possible from your computer audio. Finally, both optical and coaxial digital sockets are provided for both inputs and outputs. This lets you connect up other digital components and take advantage of the quality DAC built into the CXN.

Intuitive app interface and colour display*
With a free Apple/Android app you have effortless control over the radio stations with the comfort of your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad or Android device. The app also seamlessly manages all your streaming content and is, in effect, a very user friendly way of bringing together and controlling all your digital sources. Boasting a new colour screen, it's now possible to display album art on the player. This makes it a pleasure to browse for albums and artists by whichever control system you use.

Sleek style
The CXN is part of the totally redesigned CX-Series. The distinctive tear-drop profile gives the CXN a contemporary look and makes it the ideal partner for the digital amplifiers and CD transport. Yet it's far more than just a good-looking case; it helps the sound quality, too. With rigid, metal construction and low-resonance design, the casing helps shield the player from both mechanical and electrical interference, helping to improve clarity and reduce background noise.

For a comprehensively equipped network streamer that puts sound first, the Cambridge CXN is simply the best in class.

*Please note that the Cambridge app is not compatible with the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Impressive features but the manuals let it down Overall I am quite happy with the purchase but am finding it impossible to stream music from a NAS server; the manuals don't give any meaningful guidance. Also, you cannot use the Connect app for Spotify content unless you upgrade to the paid-for Spotify service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simplicity that’s transformed our music listening This is my first step into streaming and there’s been no regrets so far. We had around 500 CD’s and were finding ourselves not actually listening to much at all. When researching, key was a system that everybody in the house would find simple. And the CXN is it. At the time of buying, we set up our Spotify accounts. All worked easily. We’ve now switched to Tidal since the CXN upgrade. Wonderful. I’ve also been ripping all the CD’s as Flac files to a portable hard drive that plugs into the back of the CXN. So the 500 CD’s are no longer occupying space. And with Tidal, I have to wonder how much I’ll play those files. The App on the phone is pretty user friendly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound Bought this to add streaming capability, including hi res to existing separates hifi and am absolutely delighted with it. Great sound quality and so easy to setup with NAS music server.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent network player I bought this as I wanted to be able to stream wirelessly and play hi-res music that I have on my computer; previously I'd been using AirPlay from iTunes or my phone. This is an excellent player: simple to set up, looks great – the bevelled front does make it look like it's floating – and the sound is excellent (as far as my tastes go). Streaming is easy to get used to and the front display is useful to know what track you're on in a simple glance: it's easily readable from a couple of metres away. This includes a wifi dongle to plug into the back which works well when close (enough) to the router: I found that in my flat, the router was too far away for my highest resolution/bitrate files, but I was able to wire it up with ethernet. Not entirely wireless, but hidden enough for me. Cambridge recommend using a wired connection for hi-res audio. I am using JRiver Media Centre to stream my local hi-res music and this works brilliantly. Streaming from online services is great: I use Apple Music via AirPlay and that's good and smooth. Tidal support should be coming soon, but this will only be at CD quality, not full blown MQA support according to Cambridge. Internet radio also works well and sounds good to me (there is a 320kbps option). My only caution is that for a full hi-res streaming solution, this falls a bit short. As I said, Tidal will only be CD quality when supported, and there is no support for Qobuz streaming built in (I have requested this). I am using the mconnect app to work around this, which achieves both, but in a less elegant, roundabout way … but it works. The Cambridge Connect control app is also a bit spotty, but does the job well. As a summary: an excellent player, let down a bit by direct app/service support, but can easily by supplemented by other apps to fill that gap. As an addendum; this review is about the CXN (V1). Cambridge Audio has now released a newer CXN V2. This has a faster processor, but I'm not sure what other features are different.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing sound, very userfriendly. I bought the CXN a few weeks ago and I was blown away not only by how good it sounded but also by how well it all works. It's so easy to switch between Spotify, radio, NAS or whatever. The software behind it all works great and of course Cambridge Audio update as and when necessary. On the strength of it, I have now also purchase a CXA60 Amp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lot of bang for your buck After humming and hawing for the best part of five years about buying a network streamer, and having ripped all my CDs to ALAC files on a NAS, I took the plunge and bought the CXN after taking advice from the very knowledgeable Sam at the Newcastle store. After spending a little time figuring out why the streamer couldn't see my NAS (it was a fault at the latter end rather than anything being wrong with the CXN), I am delighted with the machine's performance. The sound is crisp and detailed, and once you've got the app up and running navigation is a doddle. The CXN also looks tip-top, which is a plus. I'd hankered after a Naim SuperUniti for a long time but couldn't justify the outlay. I'm now very glad I kept my wallet closed until coming across the CXN. No regrets whatsoever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CXN added new dimension to my music I have purchased all my AV equipment from Richer Sounds Leicester. The team there are always passionate about what they do, can't fault them. I have a Cambridge Audio Azure 751 BD, which gave a new lease of life to my CD collection a while back. So, trying to move with the times I decided to check out a network music player. I was well read up on the on the CXN as it has the same DAC's from Wolfson. Levi was brilliant in talking through the options to suit my system, but agreed that for my system the CXN would be a great match, not over or under specified. It was a brilliant decision, whatever source I use is excellent. Spotify gives a brilliant GUI for choosing my playlist, setting on extreme the sound is really good. I have resisted most systems to date as I have been less than impressed with the audio quality, the CXN changed that. If you choose the connect app on your phone you have the whole world of internet radio to peruse, the app isn't fantastic, but I have saved a few of my favourite stations as presets so its not and issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from CXN v1 versus V2; and is it worth the money? I bought a CXN v1 and was really disappointed to get it home only to notice that the v2 had recently been launched and I was a bit disappointed that the salesman in RS Bristol hadn't mentioned that there was a newer model. I did a bit of soul searching and research while trying to decide if I should take it back and get the v2, and having taken time out I'm ok that I didn't. Whilst I should say that I haven't seen a v2, I can say that I've been happy with the v1 and not yet encountered any instances where I would have needed more processing power. (I don't think Ive seen a review of the original CXN that mentions performance at all.) My next dilemma was whether the CXN is worth the money, considering that I could have got a high spec laptop for the same money and plugged that into my amp. Now that I own the CXN I'm still not entirely sure that it is worth the money, although the sound is truly special and as good as other reviewers suggest; the box itself does look good on my rack too. On balance I'm glad I got it, and it works really well with Spotify (Premium), which is my primary music source. Internet Radio also sounds fantastic, even with the unremarkable sampling rates that most of them use. As to the sound quality, I have my CXN v1 linked to a CXA60 and Dali Zensor 5's. The CXN definitely sounds like it's producing a much broader spectrum, and it's true that one favourite track I do indeed here vocalisation that I haven't heard before and maybe even breathing. Very nice. One technical downside of the CXN is wi-fi. It's enabled via a USB dongle that's supplied with the CXN. It works ok, but I really don't understand why it's a dongle. It also doesn't work with 5Ghz wi-fi, only 2.4GHz; most people have 2.4Ghz, and a large number now have both, and we really should be able to use 5Ghz which, in my house, at least, is much faster and more reliable.
